apparently this demo didn't make the initial Load tracklist and when ReLoad was being finished off after the Load tour it was re-recorded in 1997 with the hurdy gurdy etc - a mistake, it should have stayed 'electric' with the solo IMO.

No, he never touched the stuff. in a recent interview, he said he has only ever touched weed back in high school, apart from alcohol, obviously. He has never snorted injected any powders or pills, even coke. I think this song is more deeper than drugs. Probably more like a letter he has wrote expressing the guilt and sorrow he feels for the mistakes and fuck ups he's made in life.

This definitely has a more "traditional" Metallica feel and approach than the version they published. It's too bad artists don't put out albums that consist entirely of original, alternate or unabridged versions.

The finished version is intimate, emotional, and a fine power ballad like a bluesy/country-ish..."Nothing Else Matters". I agree that this song has a much more powerful kick to it, whereas the album version doesn't really have one. However, taking into account the actual meaning of the song, I think the album version depicts James Hetfield as the low man much more clearly.

Nevertheless, bad audio quality or not, this version is quite awesome, and stays true to the heavy metal genre. Then again, Nothing Else Matters was never a bad song in any way, regardless of its lack of heaviness. Right, lads? :D
