it's obvious that the new deck he took from his pocket was hidden under one card. he must have a way to place penn's card in his pocket in through the plastic in the deck.
it is possible since he did this very quickly without giving time for penn to look at the new deck with the plastic.
Ha! I figured out how he did it =) You can see the deck under the one card. That one card is the joker. Then under the joker is the box. The box is upside down. Allowing the effect of that one card to be slipped in backwards. He did a force in the beginning with penn. A very good one at that. Then he knew were to put the card later on. This is what I think did it. There is a seal on the top of the deck were he put the card in. Its kinda like an envelope. You just press down after and it seals.
@Ropsdsad You're right for the most part, but what gets me is how was the plastic over the box. The plastic is completely sealed, so the actual seal of the box is impossible to get to. Unless maybe there was a crease in the plastic and Penn just couldn't see it. Penn said that he pretty much knew the trick, but the last part of the trick had him baffled and Teller baffled.
@thispoorguy Like I said it was open and it had glue on it. So when he pushed the card in he had to flip the plastic up to stick it in place like a new deck.
@Ropsdsad I still dont understand how crumpled up plastic, which it had to be to be unseen, can slip over a deck of cards perfectly, with no imperfections and a man who has spent years around cards couldn't tell. Glue would make the plastic feel too stiff, plastic on card desk is usually loose and it's essentially all 1 piece, so if it was slid over the deck and there was glue to seal it, there would be a crease in the plastic.
@Ropsdsad A self-sealing box is easily the best answer I've heard for it, because yeah the rest is obvious and the only "trick" is how the card got in.
It's something we'll never know for sure since Penn was the one holding the box and he couldn't catch it. It's gotta be really good for the box and plastic to look seamless when it wasn't. That alone is an impressive construction.
I do think it's cheesy for Penn to say he didn't win because they saw a deck swap when the key part did fool them.
After watching the video 6 times. I learned know all the moves. Things you gotta ask yourself is... Why did he take one card out before revealing that penn was holding a box.
Once you figure that out, you figure most of the trick out.
Guys, clearly, if you watch at 4:53, you see that he takes the molecules and atoms that formed the joker he took out of the deck and reforms the matter into the wrapping and box inside of Penn's hands.
I think there are 2 deck switches. the first switch is from the shuffled deck to the deck where all the cards are 7 of diamonds, causing penn to pick of course, a 7 of diamonds. then the next deck switch is when he places penns card in the last deck and seals the end.
the first when i see this i fueguerout he did the switch between the deck and the normal card in 4-22 antil 4-28 look at the face of the pack of card the its openit and his fixit with his hand 4-28 and 4-29 its eazy trickbut powerful
When he does the deck switch its already in a box and the joker he pulls out of penns hands is just on top of the box to make it look like a deck of cards
You can really tell when Penn is generally thrilled by a trick. Because he knows hes getting played somehow. And he loves that. Its the reason they are doing the show, to show there is so much unique tricks out there.
Its actually really obvious when you watch it. When he gets the pen he switches the deck (4:22) however it has a normal card on top of it. Then he took penn's card at 4:33 and slid it into the middle of the deck. Then at 4:46 he takes the card that was on top of the deck out.
OK guys FYI for shawn at 4:20 after Penn chooses a card from the deck, at 4:25 Shawn does a deck switch, he puts the decks of cards in his jacket and pulls a new box of cards THAT is open on his hand, at 4:35 he gets that card back from Penn and puts it back into that box of cards and closes that box of cards, sealing it and finally puts it in Penn's hands! Thats how Shawn did his trick... impressive but with camera these days you can rewind and discover the trick.
Lots of theories on this one. The deck switch is only one part of this amazing trick. So far I haven't read a credible answer as to how he puts the random signed card back in the exact correct position in the new sequential deck (and removes the existing unsigned 7 of diamonds for that matter). Very impressive indeed.
all i can say is by the extractor deck and youll be able to do a very similar trick i perform this with no force and the card is signed so defently not forced in anyway
This was BY FAR... the most impressive card trick that I've seen in a very long time. AMAZING stuff! And to see Penn's reaction at the revelation is even more fantastic. Great stuff! Can't wait to learn this effect on for my own repertoire.
I was lucky enough to be the "spectator picking the card" at a magic convention in early 2011 when Shawn did this exact same trick to me. I can tell you that it is a free selection and not a pre-signed card.
I was even fortunate enough to have dinner with Shawn and his family the night after the convention. He is very much a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, very sincere, and very generous.
I thought similar to Phaldo - fantastic force, great presentation, and ditching the signed card seconds after being signed at 4.40 is just genius - really simple and effective routine for Shawn
My guess is that he forces Penn to sign the 7D card and he forged the signature of Penn beforehand. We're never able to see the original signature. If Penn signs the same signature all the time then it's easy to forge. And the final deck was already laid out beforehand also with the forged card preinserted.
@phaldo the card force, if he did do a card force well its top notch, cos one look at the way he fanned the cards, he even looked away for a split sec and its penn jillette, penn would counter block the force by chosing a card he would know wasnt forced
@MonkOfSevenSins My guess would be that the flap that folds in at the bottom of the box is used to separate the 6 and 8 and he just needs to slide it in there. I could be totally wrong of course
it would seem the 7 of diamonds has to go in after he unseals the new deck at the end, but how does he put in the exact spot and get rid of the other 7 of diamonds, amazing
At 4:20 he switched the deck for a brand new deck, with a joker on top, thus looking like a normal deck without cover. He took the joker out and the new deck is left.
I don't even have a simple clue about how he got the 7 of diamonds in the new deck though ...

FreakieLegend 6 months ago
@FreakieLegend Yes, but how did he:
1. Remove the original 7 of Diamonds
2. Get Penn's 7 PERFECTLY in between the 6 and the 8 of Diamonds
3. Do all this while the box was in it's complete original pachaging, consisting of 3 different seals.
The first half of the trick is very easy to notice, but how he got that card in the box is astounding.
