My mother looked just like Jane Wyman--I told her so often--big doe like brown eyes. They could have been sisters. P.S. the actor playing the prosecuting attorney was often in Sherlock Holmes movies--wonderful character actor--Miles Mander, I believe.
What an amazing movie carried by the strong, touching, and moving performance by Jane Wyman, who, without speaking a word, says plenty. It is a shame how people still think people with disabilities should not raise children, and are dumb as they are disabled, but that is far from true.
She has been one of my favorite movie actress after I saw her in an old classic movie shown on TV way back maybe in the '80s. Also she's a great character actress in Falcon Crest. With the coming of You-tube in this age, it gave me the opportunity to rediscover her. Thank you for posting this because through this and you, I'm right she's an actress to be my admired. Its a blessing to see the movie which made my fave, an Oscar best actress.
It's much better if you watch it for the second time. And that also applies for Wyman. I think that year only Barbara Stanwyck gave a performance on Wyman's level and it wasn't much competition IMO.
Wyman won the academy award for this, in a year of amazing performances. Olivia de Havilland in Snake Pit, Irene Dunne in I Remember Mama, and Barbara Stanwyck in Sorry, Wrong Number.
A truly moving - and uplifting - story, told to perfection and made all the more remarkable by the fact that it was based on real-life events that transpired near the summer home of author Elmer Harris on Prince Edward Island, upon which he based his play that was adapted to become this film.
Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres, Charles Bickford, Agnes Moorehead, Stephen McNally & Jan Sterling are all outstanding - as is the entire production.
