12 is 30% of what number? Here is it simplified. Divide 30 by 10 = 3. The mystery number is a for example. & multiply 12 by 10 = 120. So.. 3 x A = 120. Then divide 120 by 3 = 40. A is 40. The answer is 40.

Another way of solving this is using the rule of three. If you know 30 (percent) is to 12 as 100 (percent) is to x; you can say 30/12 = 100/x. And then you multiply in cross, and solve... so you have 30*x = 12 * 100 then 30x = 1200 then x = 1200/30 and finally 40. I think it's less steps and in these cases it will always be the same procedure, just my opinion though.

This is a pretty unpedagogy way to solve this problem, imo. If you are intially having problems understanding math, I don't see how this video will make it any clearer.

The way I always solve problems like these are:

=> 12 represents 30%

=> 1% is then 12/30, which equals 0.4

=> 100% is 1% * 100 which in this case is 0.4*100 = 40
