  • Me too.@MsStarshine12

  • can someone explain to me what this moive is about!!

  • @trebingbing904 Why don't you go and watch it. It's more than worth it.

  • Mr. Sakamoto!

  • 2:17からの日本剣道形、何度見ても完璧な美しさですが、スタントマン使ってるんでしょうか?坂本龍一さんも剣道やってたそうではありますが

  • i learned only recently about this movie from utada and i instantly fell in love with the movie

  • @Timebubbles screw you.

  • Eh, I came for a song and found a movie. Not bad.

  • In this movie,David Bowie sounds like Johnny Depp with a british accent.: D

  • At least I like song which the same title as this movie and it's sung by Utada Hikaru

  • @theRecONcile Utada actually took the song from this and revised it. haha. (:

  • @theRecONcile lol dude the original is better then utadas by a long shot way better

  • @abubu455446 Well no shit, he's the original. You can never beat the original. But Utada did a good job. <3

  • wats the deal is this a gay theme to it or somthing?

  • @KING07LYONS the theme ain't gay, check out the BBoy remix by DJ Binhtendo.

  • Holy Shit! i didn't know the Video Game Nazi Jack Thompson was in this game.

  • The novel (semi-autobiographical) is entitled "The Seed and The Sower". The main theme of the book is finding one's own humanity amidst war and suffering. Celliers (Bowie) finds in Yonoi (Sakamoto) a shadowy "other half" imprisoned like his own because of expectations others have placed upon them. In the book, Celliers experiences a spiritual redemption concerning his own past with his brother which allows him to sacrifice his own life to save others. The actors in the film were superb though.

  • Whoa, I never knew who the captain was played by... It's fuckin' Sakamoto himself! Holy crap! Talk about talent, doing the legendary score AND playing one of the leads? Holy crap.

  • I also understood this in 2 other levels. When Celliers kissed Captain Yonoi he literally cracked the Japanese War machine platform of the Captain and essentially the camp guards. The Japanese WWII collective consciousness was not based on displaying emotion, and particularly when a POW kissed his captor-wow! The second level to me was that of a Jesus Christ persona. Anger and hostility was met with a kiss, perhaps of affection and even more so, forgiveness.

  • Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

  • Wait, is the bald man at the end of the trailer Takeshi Kitano?

  • @Kia044 Yes.

  • @Kia044 yes. Is Takeshi Kitano

  • @Kia044 Yes, that's his old face before the motorcycle accident. Injuries resulted with surgery that altered his old face. Biggest changes are his cheekbones. Both were broken. I heard his right cheekbone was completely crushed. Owie.

  • Mr. Lawlence

  • This was a very moving and powerful movie. The kiss scene was so brilliantly filmed. That scene was great, the way it was done, and how it was done, with that haunting music playing in the background. Its not often a movie moves me, but this one did. I think the discription below by strawberrypanic81 is quite accurate, it was a situation of he who dares, survives, or wins. The two guys did have an invisible admiration for one another. Excellent.

  • Thanks for the post. I just put my order in. Awesome movie!

  • i love the song but the film is... ihhh//SEGELOHREN HIHI

  • that's david bowie right?

  • hahaha ryuichi sakamoto's acting!

  • If you want to buy this movie on DVD, visit TLAgay.com where it’s always on sale! :D

  • The Main Theme Doesn't Match This Movie

  • @SuperAzndog Certainly, but a great OST nonetheless.

I first heard the OST before watching the movie, so i was expecting snow for some reason.

  • Tom Conti's got a brother called Silly

  • Gotta love the trollin'.

  • @SilencetoSilence Your just a fucking broken muppet.

  • as a soldier I see a mutual admiration for one another, BOTH SOLDIERS WITH EQUAL COURAGE

  • There is noting you can do for the one that needs help: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence

  • LAWRENCE, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

  • i don't know if anyone knows it but there is a song by utada hikaru, a japanese singer, which is called merry christmas mr lawrence and is based on the soundtrack of this film... i really love the song =) and can recommend it to everyone who loved the original soundtrack of the movie

  • @freekypanda I just took a listen to her version and I gotta say that it completely butchers the depth and majesty of the original. I'll stick with Mr. Sakamoto's original score thank you.

  • @Incognegroes maybe you're right in saying the original one is the better version, i do like it best, too =). it's just because i knew utada's version before i listened to the original one, so i do like hers , too >.<

  • OMG tilda swinton looks amazing!!!

  • 0:35 "why am i in the ground?"

  • 2:40 - funny how he kisses him on both cheeks then it sounds like the guy yells 'GAY'

  • @zachriAKAfionn He says "Ute!" Meaning "Fire!"

  • haha it does! and then that guys like 'you remember that christmas?' as if they had gay sex or somthing haha

  • @zachriAKAfionn hahaha it does! Actually the guy yells 'wotee!' means fire in Japanese.

  • @zachriAKAfionn

That's how they dealt with them in japan at that time:P

  • @zachriAKAfionn hahahahahaha

  • @zachriAKAfionn XD HAHAHAA!

  • @zachriAKAfionn - It appears many ignorant people agree with you. Hardly unexpected, I guess!

  • @zachriAKAfionn The word gay still belonged to the straight community at the time of the action in this movie, and did not appear in print with the meaning homosexual until the late 1940s. From the time of Chaucer it had meant promiscuous, besides jolly/ merry as in the Gay Monarch, Charles II . The Jap officer on being kissed on both cheeks shouts something like Geh! which, whatever it means, bodes no good for the allied POWs.

  • @zachriAKAfionn OMG AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH!!!!!!!!

  • @spiritfired Let us learn the dignity & humanity from this film. May the eternal peace be with you. Spiritfiredさん、はっぴにゅういやあ、ご存知かな?今夜わたし、はっぴいにゅういやあ...naha naha nahahahaha... Spiritfired !!Happy New Year!

  • @GroundZeroHiroshima なんと!!なぜあなたは急に私に日本語話している?

  • what is going on with tom conti and david bowie, two 70s era light enterainer, singer-dancers, in a serious movie? how did they get these roles? why wd they be cast? was it david's cheekbones and smile?

  • good good good

  • Is Bowie meant to be an ANZAC?

  • don't be rude, I have a stutter

  • I love David, but the film is a crock of crapola

  • @teamcrumb Sad but so true.

  • This trailer is pretty bad. Although, I like the tag line

  • this i an amazing movie. love the homo-erotic side of forbidden love between Bowie and the japanese guard who keeps saving him.

  • i wonder what synths they used.

  • It's an amazing movie - quite touching ... and extremely haunting!

  • @Dulce22261

do you know of where i can watch it online?

  • i havent seen this movie before...i heard the song and it really made me curious from which movie it was from. does anyone know if this movie is good?

  • @indricablurrmyIS

The movie is quite literally "incredible". It was perfectly cast, directed, scored, and edited. It is a "keeper" that you do not want to loan out because you'll never get it back. If you comprehend the Japanese military's philosophy concerning "prisoners of war" then the movie simply keeps you on the edge of your seat. Another very good movie that is simular is "King Rat".

  • 0:20 i'll be back XD

  • Btw the movie seems to portray the Japanese soldiers in too positive a light.

  • It's not meant to portray either side as anything other than human, which is what they were.

  • They portray them as human, because believe it or not, they were.

  • 1tephania, not fr what I can recall seeing this movie:..they constantly whipped, starved & tortured the prisoners over minor transgressions, then there was that infamous scene where Yonoi forced all sick & moribound men to assemble- complete with beatings. Only Celliers wasn't treated too harshly, though he did had his fair share of of being roughed up by Yonoi's men who resented him...for obvious reasons.

  • Oh lol, yeah you can tell I didn't watch the movie.

  • No, I don't like to presume things.Jjust matter-of-factly relating what I;ve seen from this movie.

  • this moov!e Is now available b @ MOOV ZON, COM g00gle the link above

  • "They were all honorable men. But oh what deeds could be done in the name of honor."

Probably the best tag line ever.

  • I want to see this movie so much but i just can't find it as a stream, download or on TV. I don't have the habbit of buying DVD's but i'm tempted to grab one from amazon before it's too late :(

Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" is one of my favorite songs of all time, and i had heard it long before i even knew this movie existed.

  • you can pick it up on ebay for like 5 bucks lol its about the same price as a rental and way cheaper then a trip to the movies :P

  • No. The producers are not homophobic, they're simply faithful to the adaptation by the WWII novel The Sower & The Seed, of which this story is based. In it, the author makes it VERY clear the characters Celliers-which is played by Bowie- and the Japanese captain Yonoi had a mutual attraction when they first met at court- Celliers recalled "two peacocks admiring each other's beautiful feathers'.

  • @strawberrypanic81

You hit the nail on the head! The movie is quite true to the book. It is hard not to cry while reading the book or even watching the movie.

  • @aetechlic: Very true....I DID cry. :'))

  • @strawberrypanic81 So do you mean that they kind of had a thing for each other or they just both thought the other had a good military position? (It's likely that I'll never read the book & I haven't found the movie yet.) And what do mean by "The producers are not homophobic"? How would know if they are or aren't?

Btw, if that user name refers to the manga, I thought that was an awesome manga.

  • @narutorulestheworld1 I was responding to an earlier comment by another user which accuses the producers for being homophobic...which is the most ridiculous accusation if you've seen the movie, as it clearly shows how infatuated Yonoi was with Celliers. Though I have the impression the attraction's not mutual in the movie -poor Yonoi. Bt it was in the book- Celliers' description 'admiring each others' beautiful feathers' were lifted straight fr the paragraph when he & Yonoi first met.

  • @strawberrypanic81 Not 'peacocks' just cocks, lost the peas dude..

  • Furyô = Delinquent. Furyoo = Bad, deffective, poor quality.

  • What is he saying at 1:10?

"THE SENTENCE, WILL BE TRIED... WITHOUT... BREAD!"

  • @BandanaDan he's saying "the sentence will be carried out without delay"; it took me a while to figure it out too :P

  • lol oh japanese enunciation

  • @BandanaDan

The sentence will be carried out without delay

  • I'd Love to dedicate this song to a very good and great women who came into my life for a brief but fullfilling and fun filled time ,who brought me the soundtrack to this film before embarking on her exploraltion of the world, of which she sadly never returned as she was taken by the tsnamiin asia around 10 yearsago her name was Kay and i will never forget her. rip you ar truly an angel now.xxx

  • merry christmas all,love the commet japan 1 bowie0 :)

  • Japan 1 Bowie 0

  • love your commet

  • I would really like to see this movie...looks really interesting. Especially cause Bowie's in it.

  • @8SweetApple8 To sum it up: British PoWs in Japan get bum friendly with some of the gay Japanese soldiers keeping them prisoner.

Amazing soundtrack, good performances but ultimately saddening to watch unless you are Homosexual or British, which if you have been to Public School seems to be the same thing.

  • "but ultimately saddening to watch unless you are Homosexual or British"- this comment is very insulting to both gays & British people...how do you presume they don't feel sad?

  • @strawberrypanic81 I was REPLYING to '8SweetApple8' - though I notice you are both fruits...

  • ok,ok,ok....very good manners you have there *winkwink* NEXT!!!! And Sayonara bubu-san.

  • @biblebuble ,

    * ...unless you are Homosexual or British, which if you have been to Public School seems to be the same thing...* Strange you capitalise Homosexual, but this aside. The very confusing idea you seem to have is that attending public school makes you both gay and British... even if you're Australian. ... or that being British IS the same thing s being gay IF you've been to public school...?

  • Christians, I shit em !! The Catholic church is full of kiddy fiddlers and shirt lifters.

  • @MAGUS1947 correctemundo

  • Yeah, thou shall also not eat shellfish. Sorry, then, if I find your comment ridiculous.

  • fine...then i call upon exodus 21:7...sell me your daughter as a slave never to go free..you do condone the selling of your daughter right or perhaps a sister or cousin? considering your in such a hurry to kill men just for being who they are when they cause harm to NO ONE else surely me BUYING A HUMAN LIFE means nothing to you..i even promise not to sodomize her...since you're all so sensitive about that

  • silly boy

  • leviticus can kiss my ass

  • The Book of Leviticus is unable to kiss your donkey.

  • biblebuble/

Christians are free from the Levitic law because Jesus came to renew the covenant with them.

  • True.

How did Jesus personally feel about homosexuality?

He did say: "Get thee behind me Satan"

  • biblebuble/

It is a common knowledge that Jesus did not mention homosexuality in all of his teachings.

  • As I am from the upper classes I seldom take notice of anything "common" be it knowledge, sense or people.

  • @biblebuble - strange that your 'upper-class' family didn't bring you up with that aristocratic motto- discretion is the better part of valour.;-)

  • My father always told me "Antiquis temporibus, nati tibi similes in rupibus ventosissimis exponebantur ad necem" was the family motto.

  • @biblebuble : And my brain just told me " You copied this latin phrase fr Warrior Librarian...lol,. Thank you for yr entertainment. anyway..that's hilarious :p I think we both steered fr the topic here...I can see you don't like this movie...there's a simple solution actually: don't watch it. Au revoir, connard.

  • Egad, the peasants are revolting!

  • Tsk,tsk...pseudo-aristocrats... like fake designer bags- cheap, showy...and vulgar. Can be disposed of in 2 days. lol..and oh, sorry , I forget you don't understand French...so I repeat in English: Goodbye, jerk. Rest my case. CLOSED.

  • biblebuble, sorry for the delayed response, was clearing out my vid comments and found I hadn't looked at this one. "Leviticus 20: 13: If a man lies with a man..." etc., etc.

Ok, you made a comment on going to public school; I wondered why you thought that would make people change sexual orientation AND nationality. Now you answer by quoting a religious law from some Middle Eastern folk tales of some iron age desert tribe

    Erm...

    Can you say non sequitur?

  • Yes - "non sequitur".

    Can YOU say: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers;

    A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked;

If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,

Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

  • how does netflix not have this movie? lol

  • David Bowie sure could pick his movie projects (I mean that in a good way).

  • Sakamoto providing narrative v/o?

    :O

  • quite interesting film,in a good way. i watched it on tv yesterday and i liked oshima's style.the music's also great.

  • LoL Ryuichi Sakamoto is in this movie also!

  • Your best bet is e-bay or failing that h.m.v. I got a copy from h.m.v. today just looking around and i saw it for £5 so i grabbed it then when i got home and watched it looking on the internet i found out the guy who did the soundtrack is doing a concert in manchester on tuesday so i got a ticket for that.

  • I am Japanese. At this age, we could not understand each other... USA, Europiean and Japan....

  • A japanes prison camp who would have known.

  • no me dejo indiferente la pelicula, menudas perrerias !! ahunque bowie, no salio mal parado.saludos

  • european version of film is called "furyo" with subtitleson dvd. on amazon in vhs.

  • It's kinda like Gravitation, but a little less gay.

  • this trailer makes it look a hell of a lot more gay than it actually is though!

  • Nagisa Oshima, Takeshi Kitano, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Bowie .... What a cocktail !

  • Got to see this somehow.

  • Excellent movie. It was crushing when Bowie didn't help his brother. I think everyone can relate to it by sometime in their lives, letting their family down.

  • Great movie&soundtrack

  • is it a book? if it is i will read it definitely.

its a very sad and intriguing.

  • Marvellous!!!!!!! Love it!

  • :27-37 was a beautiful phrase
