Oh how I hate Microsoft Sam so damn much, it's a horrible voice. At least now I'm on the Mac i have better speech synthesis voices to use. This voice sounds very much like the DoubleTalk voices used on things like the BrailleLite Millennium and ID Mate, only it's more expressive with it's intonations.
@Vwestlife, Hello, I have a question reference the SBTALKER application.
I downloaded the DOSBOX DOS emulator, using Windows XP. However, I am new to DOSBOX. If there are commands to type in order to get the SBTALKER application running, what are they.
I've also never really worked that much with MSDOS myself.
If there are no commands, what exactly am I doing incorrectly?
I've been familiar with text to speech since the 80s. The junk for the blind was way over priced, like at least 500$, and JAWS was like 900$ just for the software. DecTalk was also very expensive. The ECHO PC speech synth card was about 150$. VoTalker was also like 200$, so for a blind person to hear their confuser was like 1K$. The Apple II was very popular for speech computers. But the speech took some gettin used to - it sounded crappy.
When I tried this programme many years ago on a 386, it came from the floppies of the Sound Blaster sampler. But I certainly remember Sbaitso executing an extended parity error, where he says "Don't try it next time".
@MachinimaMan141 No what? It doesn't emulate a Sound Blaster? It must, if the program works. Either that or the sound card itself can emulate one, which I believe many sound cards can do.
No need for DOSBox, it turns out. I'm running it straight from Windows 7 and it works fine. I guess the Windows command line correctly emulates a Sound Blaster?
@themaritimeman The NTVDM subsystem in Windows XP and later does, in fact, provide sound card emulation services. Prior to this, something like VDMsound was required.
I remember seeing a program like this in my brother's college computer lab. It was called Eliza and the only way to stop the game was to tell her to shut up. Is this the same way? :) JC
@BadEditPro It's the same basic idea as Eliza, just with voice synthesis added. If you tell Dr. Sbaitso to shut up, the program pauses for about 30 seconds.
@Bassboostz You can find it on various download sites, but you need to run it in DOSbox or on an old PC with a Sound Blaster card, or else you won't hear the voice.
You can force a parity error by just typing "say parity"
Also, Sbaitso can't pronounce "retard" or "retarded"...

LOL at 3:16. When you are typing the letters you typed the word "fuck" and at 3:20 you typed the word "shit"
When you type one of these words, Dr Sbaitso runs the parity error
I apologize for my bad English
Good video!!!

@SlimeTron5000 That's said in the earlier version 1.01. The widely seen version is 2.20 which came off the Sound Blaster Pro.

Anybody else notice that right before the computer told him "Don't get fresh" the F-bomb was in that string of characters?
weasel2htm 1 year ago
@weasel2htm I did that on purpose. I wanted to show the "parity error" that Dr. Sbaitso generates if you curse at him more than once.

@vwestlife Virtualbox emulates the Soundblaster 16 card, would that work?

@spunker88 Yes, the SBTALKER driver works with any 100% Sound Blaster compatible emulation.
