"The greatest fallacy, is thinking every pirated copy is a lost sell."
Yes, this is the biggest difference that was ignored in the video!
The 2nd:
Unpopular artists (filmmakers/song writers, etc.) don't get pirated. It is always a fraction of sales. As sales go up, pirated copies go up. The amateur songwriter WISHES he/she was popular enough to be pirated.
Also:
Should they be allowed to make INFINITE PROFITS from THE SALE OF INFINITE COPIES with no additional effort to copy the product?
I love this, thanks! As a software developer for a music based e-commerce company, I particularly liked the line "Software engineers don't go on tour".
oh no no no! IT IS NOT STEALING, stealing requires physical object to be taken from victim, copy is still there, anyway you don't "buy" thing, otherwise you will be able to sell it as well, you only buy a license for very limited usage.
No, really, if you don't want your idea to be shared publicly, why do you publish in the first place?
The greatest fallacy about online piracy is thinking every pirated copy is a lost sell.
If there's a movie out there that you have no intent on buying anyway, but would still like to see, what would you do? Do you rent it, do you see if a friend has it, or do you download it, watch it and then delete it? IF you happen to like it, there's always the option of buying the DVD with all its bonus content.
For many the act of buying digital media is an active choice of supporting the industry.
To continue, what of content that has already been released on air? I used to record all sorts of stuff from Tiny Toons to Stargate SG-1 while my family still had a working VHS. Does that make me a bad person or a criminal? Recording TV shows or aired movies for personal entertainment?
If the same rule is applied, then there's a certain grace period with theatrical content, but TV shows are fair game until internet TV becomes the norm.
Games and software are a much grayer issue of course.
pirating has been going on for years and yet I still don't see any nuclear holocaust happening to the media industry, remember these are the same industries that said video cassette would cause irreversible damage and ruin these major industries.
a lot of things i pirate or find for free could never otherwise be found 'legally' this is the great information age and companies like blockbuster that fail to adapt will die. its that simple.
If you could copy food, clothes, medicine etc... then the world would be a much nicer place. Media is the first one of these things we have mastered in copying in a way that does no damage.
In the end, people will always create. They did before the music/film industry, they will after. So what if the economy suffers. People will have less money but a wealth of content, this is surely the ideal?
@henniganwilson Fortunately, we live in a society where the creation of useful arts are rewarded. Professional content is one of our country's greatest cultural assets. Remove the economic incentive to create that professional content, and you're left with a huge, heaping pile of amateur content that no one values. That, to me, is not progress.
@runofkings Kind of, Bach, Van Gogh, Mozart, Shakespeare to name a few weren't well reward, there content stood out amongst the garbage! History teaches us we don't need to throw money around and spend millions on promotions to get the same results.
I buy youtube channel creators dvds all the time if i enjoy their work as I want to encourage them to do more. Same as i pay for DVD's retrospectively. But i will always review them first. Thats how it will always be and i believe many people agree.
@henniganwilson until pesky money stops being an issue, then it will be about bettering society, hence it should all be free and for enjoyment, whether enjoyment of watching or creating. But realistically, that aint gonna happen in a hurry :)
Like, LIKE a million times LIKE! If you don't think stealing music/movies is wrong and never pay for any of your entertainment you can come wax my car and clean my house for free...bitch.

This is great share. Thanks runofkings!
@ 2:04 is incorrect. A majority of music artists do not tour, so they lose too.
