Wow...just tried this recipe this evening & its delicious! Never knew spinach can be this good.
I really think its the process of quick boiling, shocking in cold water then wringing water out makes the spinach able to soak up the flavor of the seasoning = Wow taste.
This is very good, while similar as Chinese salad too, while we will add some green bean noodle , soaked and boiled mix within it, better help stress relief. :) In summer time. :)
I was kind of horrified to see you cook it without washing it. I was somewhat relieved you gave it a good rinse after but i can't help but think that it is much harder to get the dirt off once it is cooked since the leaves are all wilted. Do you not find raw garlic a bit strong? Why not fry the garlic in the sesame oil briefly to release the aroma?
To whoever said that spinach growers need to get the sand off of their spinach, that's not their responsibility. You need to wash it well after purchasing it just as you would leeks to get all of the mud out.
There are spinach you buy at supermarket come with lots of SAND!!! Make sure you rise them off before you boil them in a pot! Spinach growers. make sure you take the sand off before supplying them to supermarkets.
This was my favorite banchan growing up, my Father would say you can eat all banchan but no rice?! I made this the other day and it taste just like I remember, thank you Maangchi Imo!
Yes, I remember the process from job chae. I've been cooking job chae for a while now, thanks to you.
I do my spinach a bit different. I thoroughly wash it by filling the sink with cold water until the spinach floats freely. I then toss them around vigorously to remove any soil residue. After squeezing, nuke for 2 mins. on high. It comes out just wilted enough. (At this point, it easily stores in the ref/freezer for a Spanish torta besides job chae or Korean pancakes.
my girlfriend is korean too, i ask her if she can do this and she made it with a little kick, (lol) i love spicy food, she add a little crushed hot pepper and my eyes rolling when we eat it. :))
wow this looks so easy and delicious to make! i have a bunch of spinaches left over from when i made jabchae..hahaha u know what ill be having for lunch tomorrow :]
oh and i wanna let u know that all of the korean dishes ive made were because of your videos! thanks for making awesome food and awesome videos!
@Maangchi Is there a difference in the different soy sauces? I know the difference between light and dark soy sauce but not Chinese, Japanese or Korean. My mother uses Kikkoman.
You are such an inspiration to me. I love this side dish. Thank you for the recipes. Do you recommend any other kind of green leafy vegetable with this recipe?
@michoso434 Thank you! more green leafy vegetable recipes are coming soon. Check out my perilla leaf and broccoli pickle recipes on my website. Happy cooking!
hi you are really a great cook. you inspire me to eat healthy & more than that you show us that cooking healthy is not that difficult. i have a question i watch lot of korean dramas in that they show lots & lots of side dishes served in small plates or bowls. do you really serve your family every meal like that in real life. if so what about cleaning dishes 3 times daily. how about if you are working mom. i'm realy curious.can you tell me secret.
@TheSusan11111 Please visit my website and check the forum section and leave your question under "general discussion" to discuss more. I think it will be an interesting topic.
Hey Maangchi! i totally love your vids! when i see them it makes me really hungry xD
and i'm from the netherlands and we eat Spinach in the winter and kids want to eat it everytime because we said 'Spinach makes your growing up faster'!
When I tried this recipe I found the dish was a little salty. I don't think I added too much soy sauce, should I add more sugar to balance out the flavor? I then ended up using her tofu sauce recipe instead for this, and I thought it worked better. Other than that I love her recipes! I make her egg dish every day!
thank you! i was given this as an entry dish in a restaurant,, but they only give you a little bit.. they wouldn't sell me any more! now i have found what it is and how to make it.. your hair-style is cute too
I was CRAVING this spinach so bad. I was so glad to find your recipe - your directions were great and I made some yesterday. I'm making another 'batch' tomorrow also. It's DEEE-lish! My sister-in-law used to make this for me and NO restaraunt ever made it as good as she did. Thank you, lady!!!
I love spinach panchan in Korea. Now I learned how to cook it this way thanks to your video. I'm surprised that you're surprised to see people eating raw spinach. It has a lot of Iron so is actually better for our health raw then cooked. In my country we eat it in salad with olive oil and lemon but also boiled as a sauce with tomato, onions, beef and corn polenta. Anyway good vid.
I enjoyed watching the video and constantly try to incorporate spinach into any dish I can. Do you have any vegtables recipes for the kid pallet, also the background music was a bit off putting your voice seemed to get lost in it but overall you did a great job.
That's awasome!!! you really showed me the simple way. Somehow I've always thought that it is too much work to make it. cause I cut the top part one by one and wash it atleast 3 times before boil it and then rinse again......My daughter loves this dish but I didn't make it for that reason, I'll try to make it by your way today...thank you so much^^
wow, you are super. do u hv a tv show or published book? if u do, what is the title? Your family is really fortunate to have such a great korean chef :) !
Can u please show us more clips on the side dishes? Whenever I go to Korean restaurants, I always die for their side dishes and they told me the general name is called: "Pang Chan". Can u show us more varitieis of making them? I just love them so much!

Wow! It's soo easy!! I love spinach, too. Being an American in Japan, I know that I can get my Japanese wife to make this for me :&) It's funny, so many Japanese love Korean food. Though their shyness will never reveal the truth.
I was always ecstatic (:-)) when side dishes at Korean restaurants included sigeumchi namool. I tried to recreate the recipe at home but there was always somethign missing. Now, this might work. Gamsahabnida!

do you usually store this side dish in the fridge? or you have to eat it right away after cooking to get the nutrients? how long can this dish stay in the fridge?
sure, eggplant side dish! My friend loves it, so I was going to make it with her this weekend, but she is taking a trip with her family. Anyway, I will post it someday. Thanks,
hello again Maangchi, quick question..making a Korean side dish, can i cook other vegetable beside spinach?..if yes what would you recommend? thank you in an advance.

hi maangchi :), i have a question for you.
do you usually store this side dish in the fridge? or you have to eat it right away after cooking to get the nutrients? how long can this dish stay in the fridge?
thank you!!

I usually eat it right after making it. If you have some leftover, keep it in the fridge and try to finish eating in a day.
