The omission of this tiny scene ruins a lot of the Kirk story, for me. If they included this, I would not have had as much of a prob with it. It makes more sense that he slipped a computer virus into a love letter to a woman who worked in the background of the KM than that he just bugged the thing, generally.
I hate this...in the 60's they illuded to the "kobioshi maru"...in the 80's they explained that kirk added to the program, he added himself as a captian the klingons feared and respected so they did not engage. In the 2000's they changed it to ' he hit a power up and beat 'em '
When i watched this movie with mai gifu, he thought the apple Kirk eats was an homage to the apple that the original Kirk ate in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, in the scene inside the Genesis cavern, they tell how Kirk was the only cadet to ever beat the no-win scenario Kobayashi Maru test). In that movie when we realize Kirk was bluffing Khan he says, 'i don't like to lose' and takes a bite of an apple then too. So, Kirk, Kobayashi Maru, apple.. homage yes? But JJ Abrams denies this o_0
JJ Abrahms Orion female compared to the Enterprise Orion females I thought was a little inferior in the prosthetic make up and the alien exoticism. The Enterprise Orion females seems more alien to me in my own opinion.
@mayena There were no prosthetics in the make up for Orion women, only skin tone! Cosmetic, not prosthetic.. no bumps, horns, deformations. As far as the alien exoticism, that effect is created by costume, and in how the women moved when the intent was to portray seductiveness. Gaila is only seen walking once in the final version of the movie, and is never acting seductive, so not really fair to compare her to the others that way.
@Mikanojo I originally meant the skin tone because in the Enterprise the Orion females were dermatologically of slight darker green hue but the Galia character it seems they just put green make up on. I am not talking about the dance movements as well and the striking black hair add something to it as well.
@mayena There is an old old book from 2008 called the Orions Book of Common Knowledge, written by Peter R. Rogan, created for FASA Corporation as a supplement to the official Star Trek role playing game. According to that reference the Orion skin tone for women ranges from yellow green to dark green, and the Orion male skin tones range from yellow to orange(!) The hair is supposedly naturally always black. But consider that we change our hair color often and easily.
@mayena According to Memory Alpha, the initial concept for the Orion women was written for 'The Cage' pilot episode: The Orion slave girls were first conceived in the story outline for "The Cage", as "sinuous green dancing girls" of Protos VI, who danced barefooted along with Vina, though she herself was not technically said to be one of them. (The Making of Star Trek, p. 58)
@mayena In the second revised final draft script of "The Cage", the appearance of Vina as an Orion slave girl is described; "Wild! Green skin, glistening as if oiled. Her fingertips are long gleaming razor-edged scimitars, her hair not unattractive but suggesting a wild animal mane." After her eyes are also stated to be "wild," "We feel she's larger than before, immensely strong, dancing wildly, animal beautiful. The green, animal Vina, seeming taller than Winter, perhaps stronger."
@mayena There is a general acceptance for the Orion women to have black hair, but in the JJ Abrams movie, an alternate timeline is created. There is even a possibility that Abrams chose to establish Orion women with red hair, as there is actually TWO Orion women in the original draft of the film. Gaila, and another redhead Orion woman that Kirk mistakes for Gaila in a scene that was eventually cut from the final release. YouTube video - (QrLU3DU-ycM) Kirk apologizes to...not Gaila.
@mayena As far as the attractiveness, it is truly subjective. i am a woman, and a lesbian. Speaking only for me, it was not the desperate Vina or the petulant Marta or the impulsive Gaila or the conniving D'Nesh (or her sisters that looked like men in drag) that i found attractive. Look in YouTube for a short video called Orion Slave Girl (Tljzf9hNXqo) posted by minusyouandme. You only see her for a moment.. but she is more feminine, more alluring, more attractive to me.
The reason Kirk is eating an apple relates to The Wrath of Khan. As Kirk tells Saavik how he beat the Kobayashi Maru, he is eating an apple. I thought that was nice homage to The Wrath of Khan in the new movie.
@Science4ver eeeh to some extent; i like to call timelines like this "loosely changed" timelines because although a few things are out of place, most of the things stay the same. Sorta like Dbz during Future Trunks timeline (if you've watched Dragon ball z, idk lol)
@Mikanojo I think these are alternate versions. These are in the movie, but these seem somewhat different (for instance, I don't remember the green alien woman on the bridge during the Kobayashi Maru test).
@Mikanojo only a small part of this was deleted.. in the final movie, Kirk does not tell Gaila about a letter, and we do not see her open the email that uploads the hack into the system that allows Kirk to beat the test. The rest of the scene IS the same. Later in the movie at the disciplinary hearing, if you look closely Gaila is in the crowd looking angry and hurt.. but we did not know why she was upset then, because the 'letter' reference scenes were deleted.
@thegodofmusic04 yeah because in the movie, kirk never talks about the note with gaila... or you see gaila open the note/mail that triggers the reboot of the test...great version you have of the movie, lucky you ..
@Mikanojo The scene was edited so that the green chick isn't the one who launches the virus that disabled the simulator because if Kirk used her like that he would have been a giant rectum.
Is that shrek's daughter??

With these added scenes, it makes more sense why Kirk said "I gotta study". Seems he did more that night than just (literally) screw around. :)
