In 1974 I was 16 y.o. I had a Maico 501 as my second dirt bike. This was in a small town in Oregon. Most of my fellow riders had never heard of Maicos. My 501 screamed. Looing back, it was probably way too much bike for me, but it sure was fun. Got rid of it only becuase parts were such a bitch to get. Back then, no internet. Ake Jonassen (Maico rider) was my hero. So sad about Maico and all the other Euro bikes wiped out by the jap factories
that almost makes you wanna cry at the end when it is showing all the pics of the old factory it really sucks knowing that the best bikes are in our past and now everything is going digital, fuel injected, and pollution controlled!
Maico my day...my old 490 used to vapourize a metzler in about two motos and a plug for every 45 minutes of ride time. cheap! when you consider how much fun it was.
Yeah! there it is! 86' 500 my dad used to have one still have the video of him riding it back in the day...need to get it on dvd before it disintegrates haha
Badass video man! Badass! I have always wanted to see pictures of the old factory. Its a shame they demoed it. Thank you again from all of us Maico freaks out there! I would love to find some more info on that 4 stroke i saw...
Those 4 stroke prototypes are mostly home made, there are several of them even with primative water cooling. Maico bottom end with home made 4 stroke top end. Maico did have a prototype 4 stroke in 86.
I was thinking about that today. Why they hell would they discontinue such a project??? A liquid cooled 4 stroke, made from a Maico 2 stroke bottom end? In the 80s? Damnit Maico!
that would be sweet to walk into to that factory if it was still around and see ppl dressed in 80's clothing building the old maico bikes...man i need a time machine
1983 the original company bankrupt. The description on the video has a timeline of ownership since its changed hands several times since 1983, but every year a bike has been produced.
I found an article scanned online that reviewed the new Maicos against KTM 4 strokes. The article was jadded towards 4 strokes, you can find it on mywesite under magainzes called stone temple pilots
i recently bought a magazine with a review of the maico 700 08 model. looks like a phenomenal bike and it has 82hp at the rear wheel. thats astonishing for a 2 stroke motorcrosser.
I found an article scanned online that reviewed the new Maicos against KTM 4 strokes. The article was jadded towards 4 strokes, you can find it on mywesite under magainzes called stone temple pilots
Ahhh... the days when my friends and I would roll to the grid on our Wheelsmith Maicos...striking fear in the hearts of all the"other" brands...it's a nice feeling to know that no one else can out handle, out accelerate, or out jump you... truly state of the art motocross weaponry... what awesome photos, awesome memories... awesome machines... thanks again
Maico 685 2-Stroke supermoto video NOW! I wanna see, i wanna hear, i wanna see it work so bad :( 200km/h on gravel rumours but no videos anywhere 5/5!
There is a video on youtube, the 685 is used in the ATK Intimidator 700 model. It's not in the Maico frame but it's the same motor, it's not maxed out or anything but there are 2 videos of it. Search on 700 ATK and you should find them.
i used to own a armstrong 500 motorcrosser rotax 2 stroker when i was a kid i have never seen another 1 since does any 1 no anything about these machines not the shitty army bikes,
Clews Competition Motorcycles was found in 1971 out of BSA's competition department. In fact, CCM produced machines branded as CanAm in the early 80s for sale in north america.
In 1981 Armstrong bought a majority share of CCM and CCM-Armstrong was born and used Rotax engines (Austrian made engines used by many different manufactures, even Can Am),
In the 80s they produced many road race and motorcross compeition bikes. They sold back to CCM in 1987. CCM still exists as does rotax.
Very true! I fully intend for my children to grow up riding Maico. I'll obviously have to wait on that one a while since I'm still just 17, but it will happen some day.
In the US, ATK buys the 685 engine from Maico and uses it in their 700cc Intimidator model. You can go to atkusa website to purchase it without having to import a maico, of coruse it will say ATK on it and not Maico but it's the same engine.
I visited the Maico factory in 82. They thought I was a factory rider coming to test a bike. I should have taken them up on the offer (would have had my 15 minutes of fame).
they tried yellow, red and blue. forgot to try green.
