This is just fukking fantastic!!!!!! Jack off his face...Ginger is on mars... Clapton holding it all together... What a performance... !!! Would have given my left bollock to have been there!!!
I just love it towards the end how most of the audience are really still and then there's that one guy just headbanging like crazy in the middle of them all!!
Very strange - Baker and Bruce must have been heavily on drugs. During the guitar solo the whole thing nearly got out of control - and very fast as well. Fortunately today´s musicians have more discipline.
@princy3010 not the best three piece in a supernatural, universal way. there JHE and ELP to put somewhere in other contextes o live performance. surely best trio live.
I was there. Ticket 12 shillings and sixpence if I recall. Hendrix is an immortal genius as an individual musician but Cream, I believe, were the most powerful band in rock/blues history. Bruce and Baker are just a colossal rhythm section and Clapton, well, Clapton on his day could produce a solo that would completely blow you away. 2nd solo in Crossroads on Wheels of Fire being a case in point.
The late 60's and most of the 70's is when the drum solo was at its best. Joey from Slipknot is the only drummer worthy of actauly doing a drum solo today. Ginger Baker, John Bonham and Keith Moon are by far the greatest drummers in Music history.
Having been involved in live playing for the past 36 years, I'm well aware of the use of chemicals as inspiration to produce music. But it remains a fact that playing whilst derelict as a result of this intake produces below-par performances.
I didn't call any band "shitty" from that period - although no doubt there are those that qualify - but organising a trip to the toilet under the effects of LSD is difficult enough, let alone playing to this standard.
The solo starting at 2:00 to me screams why they split, conflicting personalities and musical confidence, constantly wanting to beat each other, it proggressively becomes a competition when everyone is soloing
If you really thought about it, you would knew that professionals, and most of all legends, as they were, do not have that kind of childish problems. If you really wanna know the reason, read Clapton's autobiography.
and if you really read autobiography, you should know that Clapton had A LOT of childish problems :) but I love him, and Cream...it's good that now he is a totally other man :)
allard, hit the nail on the head. SOLOing - the clue's in the word. Solos are just as much about respecting each others abilities as showing off to the crowd. When the band can't even take turns, and feel it to be a competition, there's no respect.
I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of that band playing and generation witnessing (awesome) music like that in a place like that. Can you imagine having to sit down during a tune like that? Shit.
Feels a little bit fast, perhaps the version I am use to is a bit slow :) I really miss not beeing to buy records of bands today recorded in such conditions, the recording sound really gives culture and beauty to the style.
Don't like to compare old with new but... get any current 'good' live band and give them the exact equipment Cream are using here and see if they can play anything! Guitars don't stay in tune, underpowered vocal PA, bugger all stage monitoring - how the F could they even here each other properly and still play so well?
this when the smack was destroying the group. if you notice how much more weight they have on their faces just 18 month earlier. .great music though. .
@hagcom What's wrong with a bit of dope to brighten up the day ? It's fine in moderation but not for everyone.
Drugs are unavoidable in this industry, abstinence may be impossible so I teach harm minimisation.
Drugs are like anything, if abused they can screw up your life but so are women, are you gonna avoid women too? No you become more discerning and approach them with balance.
I'm 60 and have had my fill of most of life's vices, with a few disasters but I wouldn't change anything, it was fun
