I love how this is what people thought could be on the moon. Before we landed on the moon, and had a definate answer of what was up there the moon seemed a lot better of a place. If you had a talk with someone in 1902 of what was on the moon, you would hear hundred of different, yet wonderful ideas. Now we know its just a rock with creators.
At first I read the book 'Invention of Hugo Cabret' so I was thinking that I should look this up. I knew George was a real person but I never thought of looking this. I like the book better than the movie on because for some reason it isn't the same to the book in some parts... :)
If anyone wanna watch a good film from the silent movie area I highly recommend you watch the 2010 restoration of Metropolis. Not only is Metropolis the most expensive silent movie of all its a movie it pretty much invented the sci-fi genre. It has stunning visuals and special effects that were way way way ahead of their time; especially the scene were the robot comes to life - even now after seeing so much CGI in films that scene still stands up and is something of a wonder.
The electronica french duo, Air, is releasing a new album called Le Voyage Dans La Lune. It will be released on Feb 7, 2012, and you can preorder it on iTunes.
@jillianbradshaw I am. But I did see the movie with the moon and the plane/shuttle shooting into it's eye. I had seen it many times before in different places. The movie Hugo definitely made me enchanted by Georges Méliès' story.
I remember watching this with my dad when I was younger. I have fond memories of this film because it was something silly, genius, and enjoyable all wrapped into one 12 minute movie, and it brought us closer together. But for some reason, I never bothered to ask what it was called. By chance, I rediscovered not only the film but its backstory by watching Hugo a couple weeks ago. I'm so glad I found this again. Thank you, Melies, for making life a little more enjoyable :)
You've got to admit, those special effects have held up a lot better than a lot of the more modern effects. It just goes to show that effort, ingenuity, and skill will go a hell of a lot further than technology.
By the way, the final scenes are missing in this print. For the ending (and to find out what happened to the alien that jumped onto the rocket), look for a 12:58 version of Le voyage dans la lune, here on Youtube.
I always loved this film, but I didn't know what it was called, or who made it. I'm glad that I work at a movie theater, otherwise I probably never would've found out.
@mwvandersteen Well, I'l be more specific:) Of course there were Lumieres and so on. BUT Meliese was the first one who really realized the potencial of film and found out that people wanna see a story. He was the first one who used something like a script and acting in his movies. So that makes him in my eyes the first real "director" ever:)
@Pirkeization Depends on what you consider science fiction. A popular subject around 1895-1897 were several shorts about a wonderful futuristic machine: "Dogs and cats are fed in at one end of the machine, and come out at the other as linked sausages. One of the most laughable scenes in the list."
I've always liked silen films like Charlie Chaplin and the old classics as they really engage me but Hugo was great as it taught me more about George Melies and his work who was brilliantly played by Ben Kingsley. Thanks for uploading!
I watched this for the first time around 2002 I think it was in a film class in college. The teacher was awesome. Another great one to look up is Nosferatu. I did see Hugo also and was in awe at how well Scorsese paid tribute to one of the greatest visionaries of the time. He spun together a magical tale out of history and story-telling. I loved it and I'm amazed at how well he incorporated the beginnings of film and turned a new generation of film goers on to this film. :)
Honestly I read the book, Hugo first (in a day no less) because I heard of a film adeptation by Martin Scorsese and I like to look into source material first. Loved every moment. How ironic though, I've been a cinema junkie for years and yet I'd never looked into how it all started, and originally I had no idea of the novel's plot originally. A book adapted into a film took me back to the beginning of my obsession. Bit wonderous I'd say, and what a marvellous way to do so.
I actually have the music to this on mute and Tonight, Tonight turned on. But yeah, that video is a huge homage to this film, and a lot of the work of Georges Méliès. One of the last shots even has a boat that says SS Méliès =P
So I saw Hugo yesterday...and they made it look like "A Trip to the Moon" was somewhat in color. Was that just something they said in the movie...or was the film really tinted in this movie?
@SJMoviesbajioThe original was B& W, but they experimented with tinting the films as well in a another version I think. I dream of the day when Jules Verne and this classic film become real. When a Space Capsule or rocket can be fire from a Rifled Electromagnetic Gun into Space. I love these old films, Imagine the French landing on the Moon taking it over as Napoleon did in Europe, or at least trying to. Amazing classic film. I cannot imagine it being done now any better.
