  • "The 1902 attempt by NASA to dupe the unsuspecting public was far less successful"

  • 4:42

  • Like this if you watched this after reading the book and WAY before watching the movie. :)

  • The moon in this scares the fuck out of me even now im 16

  • they are all dead

  • @deplated how?

  • I love how this is what people thought could be on the moon. Before we landed on the moon, and had a definate answer of what was up there the moon seemed a lot better of a place. If you had a talk with someone in 1902 of what was on the moon, you would hear hundred of different, yet wonderful ideas. Now we know its just a rock with creators.

  • That's about what actually happened.

  • still awesome

  • 4:26 for the moon getting hit in the eye!

  • This is what I call, original. I wish I could thank George for practically giving birth to narrative film!

  • At first I read the book 'Invention of Hugo Cabret' so I was thinking that I should look this up. I knew George was a real person but I never thought of looking this. I like the book better than the movie on because for some reason it isn't the same to the book in some parts... :)

  • smashing pumpkins brought me here.lol!!!

  • is that indiana jones music???? 5:03

  • Hugo was amazing! I never realised George was a real person

  • Apollo 13 was better.

  • @hemifoo

    Fucking Idiot.

  • thumbs up if Hugo brought you here

  • @tblakeTV

If it took seeing Hugo to bring you here, then you are an idiot.

  • @depelated took the smashing pumpkins to bring me here. I'M SLIGHTLY LESS OF AN IDIOT! :D

  • he say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

  • Quite the commentary

  • Now thats how they really landed on the moon!!!

  • Wow... How did you know?

  • Thumbs up if "From the Earth to the Moon"s last episode brought u here

  • Like if you're watching this after seeing the movie Hugo :D

  • Release it in Blu-ray!

  • If anyone wanna watch a good film from the silent movie area I highly recommend you watch the 2010 restoration of Metropolis. Not only is Metropolis the most expensive silent movie of all its a movie it pretty much invented the sci-fi genre. It has stunning visuals and special effects that were way way way ahead of their time; especially the scene were the robot comes to life - even now after seeing so much CGI in films that scene still stands up and is something of a wonder.

  • Tonight tonigh ...

  • Things Like This Scare The Shit Outta Me!

  • thumbs up if hugo bought you here. spectacular book and film

  • 4:43 - I love it when I actually understand a Futurama joke, when the moonface gets a beer in his eye on the second episode.

  • Merci Hugo Cabret ♥ Très beau film, qui me fait venir ce soir, regarder cette vidéo... Du grand cinéma =)

  • Filmed yesterday.

  • Hugo brought me here. :,) All I can say is that that was a wonderful film!!!! :)

  • This has a bit more story to it, than Roundhay garden Scene .

  • I have just finished to read Hugo Cabret. I enjoyed the book and now Melies' A trip to the Moon.

  • @jillianbradshaw I am watching this approximately 2 weeks after I watched Hugo. What an amazing movie!

  • The electronica french duo, Air, is releasing a new album called Le Voyage Dans La Lune. It will be released on Feb 7, 2012, and you can preorder it on iTunes.

  • toniiiitteee, tooooniiittteee toooooniittteee

  • how many of you are watching this after you watched Hugo?

  • @jillianbradshaw

    I am :)

  • @jillianbradshaw I am. But I did see the movie with the moon and the plane/shuttle shooting into it's eye. I had seen it many times before in different places. The movie Hugo definitely made me enchanted by Georges Méliès' story.

  • creepy moon

  • Watching this feels weird without The Smashing Pumpkins playing.

  • This idea they is MADNESS.

    I like it.

  • I remember watching this with my dad when I was younger. I have fond memories of this film because it was something silly, genius, and enjoyable all wrapped into one 12 minute movie, and it brought us closer together. But for some reason, I never bothered to ask what it was called. By chance, I rediscovered not only the film but its backstory by watching Hugo a couple weeks ago. I'm so glad I found this again. Thank you, Melies, for making life a little more enjoyable :)

  • trippy

  • Those are some really good special effects for NINETEEN FREAKING TWO.

How did they do that with the tech available at the time? It's better than most 50's B movies!

  • Hard to enjoy the film when you have that really ugly face in the suggestions :P

  • Thumbs up if you watched this after seeing hugo

  • TO THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNAAAAAAAAA

    beyotch

  • @GiromCalica haha. We're everywhere.

  • @bmoreravens12 eeyup

    I have a mind of a grandpa

  • i love this video its so amazing that this film was made over 100 years ago and that its still around its a miracle!

  • Thr music is from the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles :-)

  • Holy shit those were some crazy effects!

  • is there an HD version of this?

  • thumbs up if danz and seamus brought you here!

  • Oh Danz.... what a cat.

  • @TheCerealKillz what? i don't get it

  • You've got to admit, those special effects have held up a lot better than a lot of the more modern effects. It just goes to show that effort, ingenuity, and skill will go a hell of a lot further than technology.

  • Hugo was meh... Scorsese is a great story teller especially when he shoots for an adult audience.

  • film is like wine - elder is better ;)

  • By the way, the final scenes are missing in this print. For the ending (and to find out what happened to the alien that jumped onto the rocket), look for a 12:58 version of Le voyage dans la lune, here on Youtube.

  • Thumbs up if Hugo didn't bring you here because you knew about Georges Melies long before Hugo was made :D

  • George Méliès, you were brilliant!

  • Méliès you sexy beast - thanks for your filmy genius!

  • Smashing pumpkins brought me here!

  • WTF is Hugo?

  • @JKRowling123 Martin Scorsese's new movie. I just saw it. It's beautiful. And Georges Méliès is incredibly prevalent to the story.

  • it kind of looks like the moon is saying "what the fuck?!" when it gets by the rocket at 4:40

  • Im watching this because i think old films such as this one are cool c:

  • Thumbs up if you have no idea what the hell "Hugo" is.

  • "if you ever wonder where your dreams come from when you go to sleep at night, just look around. This is where they are made."

    Random Hugo quote. <3

  • thumbs up if you're watching this after reading "the invention of hugo cabret" c:

  • Thumbs up if BBC brought you here!

  • Thumbs Up If You Watching This After " Hugo Cabret " !!

  • I always loved this film, but I didn't know what it was called, or who made it. I'm glad that I work at a movie theater, otherwise I probably never would've found out.

  • Did Hugo kind of suck? Or did I miss something?? :/

  • i'm gonna fuck that hugo. isn't there anyone watching that for anything

  • Who watched this because of Hugo

  • Thumbs up if George Meliese the first director ever brought you here and not movie from 2011;)

  • @Jillian1950 George Melies the first director ever?! Where did you get that idea?

  • @mwvandersteen Well, I'l be more specific:) Of course there were Lumieres and so on. BUT Meliese was the first one who really realized the potencial of film and found out that people wanna see a story. He was the first one who used something like a script and acting in his movies. So that makes him in my eyes the first real "director" ever:)

  • @mwvandersteen And yeah, I got this idea from my teacher in my lesson of film history long time ago:)

  • @Jillian1950 Allright, I see what you mean. Thanks for the quick response.

  • Amazing so cool that they could find the film and put it on youtube!!!!!!

  • Fuck Stanley Kubrick's 2001. A TRIP TO THE MOON FTW

  • doing my current art project as a tribute to George Melies! Super excited!

  • is this first science fiction film on earth?

  • @Pirkeization Kind of:D

  • @Pirkeization Depends on what you consider science fiction. A popular subject around 1895-1897 were several shorts about a wonderful futuristic machine: "Dogs and cats are fed in at one end of the machine, and come out at the other as linked sausages. One of the most laughable scenes in the list."

  • I've always liked silen films like Charlie Chaplin and the old classics as they really engage me but Hugo was great as it taught me more about George Melies and his work who was brilliantly played by Ben Kingsley. Thanks for uploading!

  • Wow, surprised how much I enjoyed it. Never truly appreciated silent movies until now.

  • I looked this up because I saw the best movie ever Hugo I also read the book if you have not read it! By the way George melies is a GEINUS!!!

  • I watched this for the first time around 2002 I think it was in a film class in college. The teacher was awesome. Another great one to look up is Nosferatu. I did see Hugo also and was in awe at how well Scorsese paid tribute to one of the greatest visionaries of the time. He spun together a magical tale out of history and story-telling. I loved it and I'm amazed at how well he incorporated the beginnings of film and turned a new generation of film goers on to this film. :)

  • i just looked this up after watching hugo!

    It was soo cool ;D

  • Happy birthday Georges, 150 years ago a genius was born!

    p.s. FUCK YOU Thomas Edison!

  • @baldurus1 wooo tesla fuck edison!

  • Where did the music come from? Did Melies include a score?

  • I think this was reproduced at the wrong frame-rate. Most silent films were purposefully projected at faster speed.

  • Such imagination.

  • The CGI looks fake haha

  • @nholt what cgi? theres no computer:P

  • @brandonjamres It was a joke

  • Like this if you haven't seen "Hugo" and you have no idea what the others are talking about

  • film school revisited :-)

  • I watched this in French class:D then at Hugo. We have to write a movie report about it.

  • Havent seen Hugo, but i understand I should do it.

  • Hugo didn't bring me here... It will come into movies in 2012?!

  • Thumbs up if Hugo brought you here.

  • Just saw Hugo!

  • Why do so many people fish for thumbs up? It's kinda sad.

  • Thumbs up if Martin Scorsese's Hugo bought you here!

  • Thanks to Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret that I am aware of Melies' masterpiece..

  • ah 4:44 a classic picture:D

  • i LOVE hugo and hugo cabret :D

  • To think that which was once science fiction is now an everyday reality, on makes one wonder what the future will hold.

  • I just saw Hugo this afternoon, which brought me here.

  • I just saw Hugo, great movie

  • hugo sent me here

  • this movie probably inspired the music video of smashing pumpkins "tonight tonight"

  • Thumbs up if Hugo brought you here.

  • @SlapstickCoyote Hugo didn't lead me here

    so, thumbs down to you

  • @GiromCalica thumbs down to you becuase your life isn't complete until you see it so ha

  • @SlapstickCoyote My life is never complete

  • @GiromCalica shut up

  • @SlapstickCoyote My Little Pony led me here

  • "Time is never time at all

You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth

And our lives are forever changed

We will never be the same..."

  • 4:42 looked like that really hurt ... D:

  • They certainly don't make movies like this anymore!!..........Thank God!

  • like if you watching this after you watched HUGO!

  • @djdile23 Guilty as charged here.

  • @djdile23 I read the book.

  • @djdile23 i m watching this after i read hugo lol

  • @djdile23 My video production teacher made me watch this in 12th grade. He was great.

  • @djdile23

Thumbs up if Hugo was a AWESOME movie

  • There was a hand painted version, too. It was discovered in Spain sometime in the late 20th century, I think.

  • All of those people are dead now.

  • Smashing Pumpkins anyone?

  • @mitchqqqqqq

I actually have the music to this on mute and Tonight, Tonight turned on. But yeah, that video is a huge homage to this film, and a lot of the work of Georges Méliès. One of the last shots even has a boat that says SS Méliès =P

  • So I saw Hugo yesterday...and they made it look like "A Trip to the Moon" was somewhat in color. Was that just something they said in the movie...or was the film really tinted in this movie?

  • @SJMoviesbajioThe original was B& W, but they experimented with tinting the films as well in a another version I think. I dream of the day when Jules Verne and this classic film become real. When a Space Capsule or rocket can be fire from a Rifled Electromagnetic Gun into Space. I love these old films, Imagine the French landing on the Moon taking it over as Napoleon did in Europe, or at least trying to. Amazing classic film. I cannot imagine it being done now any better.

  • The soundtrack is from The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. I will say though, it doesn't seem entirely out of place here.

  • HUGO is a beautiful movie and the connection to early silent French films is genius.

  • Hugo is a good example of 3-D used correctly.

  • How can people be so cruel against Hugo, when it's a movie that is sure to alert movie-goers to the beauty that is early cinema, and Georges Melies?

  • The famous moon getting hit by a rocket scene starts 4:30

  • I just got back from Hugo and this movie was shown in scenes.

  • Hmm...even then, NASA had more funding than they do now. Oh and I came here from Smashing Pumpkins.

  • I agree that Hugo was boring. If your a moron.

  • @blabbermouth777 Your name suits you.

  • Awesome, Hugo gives me a chance to be a hipster; thumbs up if you knee about this long before Hugo!

  • Oh my the aliens look like Dr. Hoyberg from Futurama!!!!? Or rather, Dr. Hoyberg looks like these aliens, more like. COOL!

  • @colbyfromage is hoyberg the spanish version of Dr. zoidburg

  • @cristoffL Hahaha..... oops.

  • Take a good look people, cinematography and all the movies you love were born from this :)

  • Thumbs up if "Tonight, Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins was your first exposure to this movie? :)

  • @gibaniba thumbs down

  • @gibaniba so thumbs down if you thought hugo was amazing

  • I just watched Hugo. I had heard of George Melies. And have seen this many times. But as usual Scorcese made me appreciate something even more. Truely this was a great man. I understand Edison and the Lumiere Brothers put the technology together to make it possible. But this man and Porter made movies people can enjoy possible.

  • This man is a fucking wizard.

  • How amazing was Scorsese's "Hugo"? 3-D taken to a whole new level of storytelling. Finally someone uses it for the most powerful effect of all - EMOTION!

  • @ZekeMahogany I totally agree! Cheesy affairs like Avatar which are overly conscious of their 3D special effects are unlikely to ever bring seriousness to 3D cinema, Hugo with its subtle yet marvelous use of 3D is to 3D what movies like Gone With the Wind were to color. Superb movie!

  • @ZekeMahogany Yes I did! Wasn't it amazing! :)

  • Thumbs up if you are watching this because of Hugo
