Undeniably, Spenser was the most human P.I. of the 80's. That said, I didn't like Season 3 of SFH. When Susan returned, Spenser didn't seem as tough and vulnerable as in Season 2 (when he often lived alone and poured himself into cases). Also, the episodes weren't as interesting or humorous as S2. This theme isn't as introspective as S2's. And I also liked Spenser's and Rita Fiori's slow-growing relationship and the writers elevating Hawk from 1 dimensional to at least 2.5 dimensional in S2.
@Mr1978G Clooney is a must for Spenser, and Katherine Zeta-Jones as Susan. Ving Rhames is a good choice -- but Michael Jai White would be better as Hawk. Of course, Avery Brooks owns that role.
Spenser was possibly the best detective character since Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlow. Robert Urich was one of the best actors since the demise of the old guard of Hollywood leading men. Avery Brooks as Hawk provided a kind of "Mirror Darkly" reflection of Spenser.
@templerman Spenser was Marlowe transplanted to Boston from LA, as both were cops attached to the DA's office before going independent and using goofy names to introduce themselves ("Doghouse Reilly" versus "Orotund Vowell" and "Pervis Anathema"). Parker even wrote the direct sequel to THE BIG SLEEP entitled PERCHANCE TO DREAM and finished POODLE SPRINGS for Chandler.
best intro of the series i am from MA and a lot of this show was shot in the boston area when i am driving into these towns i thinkbof spenser narrating
The guy had class. I watched it at my friend's house with her dad while waiting for her to get ready and became hooked. I liked the theme music for season 1 the best, although they are all good.
The third season was the final season. It was on Sunday nights on ABC. My father really got into the series, and I got him one of the Spenser novels from the library. He liked it and by the time he died a few years later, he had read almost all the Spenser books. I always loved the third season theme. Thanks for making me remember.
Spenser For Hire was a very well produced, directed. And all the characters were very well written. I have always felt. That if Miami Vice was not in the picture. Spenser would of gone on for more years.
I just hope the show comes out on dvd soon. I miss it very much. And yes. Season 3's opening with Richard Jackel still a part of the show. Is the best.
I LOVE IT.

Robert Urich
From Jim Street to Detective Dan Tana to Spenser
He was one of the greatest actors to ever play a cop.
The 80's Ruled with TJ Hooker, HUNTER and Spenser for Hire

Yes, thanks for posting. It brings back a lot of good memories about the show and Robert Urich--a great guy who left us way too early.
I always thought this was the best version of the Theme & Opening Credits.
