lol @ the chick comparing hair care to surgery, "professionals" im sorry- i know what you do can get technical but comparing a career that deals with someones insignificant hair to surgical bodily procedures is a completely unjustifiable claim. if i wanted to do hair i could walk to the paul mitchell school three blocks away and be accepted, i think its a tad harder to get into medical school (not to put down anyones career choice if you love your job but technically we all could live bald)
I do not have the balls to cut my hair yet! Lol. Basically I was wondering if I heard you correctly...I should hold my fingers vertically throughout the entire cut so as to keep whatever layers I do have? And what was it you did with a 90 degree angle..I'm obv not a mathematician, but is that the same as holding you hands vertically? Thanks!!
LOL, i havent even had the vid download yet and im weak at all the negative comments! Its the comments that makes these vids easier to enjoy for the most part anyhow, keep spreading the hate people, it feeds the trolls :D
I think all the people saying negative things about this should be silenced because look at her hair since then. Obviously she is doing something right. SO HUSH.
Love your hair! :) and to those people that are like "Well i am a stylist and blah blah " thanks for saying we are "stupid and need to spend our $ on cuts that we most of the time don't like. (I'm gona hate myself for this cas people irk me when they go all "well I know a person so I know everything") I used to know a pro stylist she was my sis for a bit and she cut her own hair! no fanciness either cut it like this lady and other people that want to save some cash!... lol thats all folks
As a professional stylist I can ensure that if her hair was blown out straight it would be uneven as hell.. No one can cut their own hair correctly without being able to work in a 360 motion. I can't even cut my own hair.. Why be ignorant and cheap? Just find a great stylist that you trust and go in for a trim every 6 to 8 weeks.. People are so silly...
@loveispeaceandjoyful oh shut up, wrong is wrong and creating a video and trying to instruct someone to do something that not even a professional can do to themselves is absolutely irresponsible. And i'm sure because of this irresponsible video there has been a frenzy of women all over america going into the salon with uneven hair. That's just more money for us. It comes down to people like you that don't have respect for our profession and that's a serious issue.
@loveispeaceandjoyful moreover, u would be outraged if she created a video showing people how to perform some sort of surgery on themselves. That same outraged should by apply to this specific video. There's no outrage because women like you don't have respect for our profession. I can list a number of professional reasons why what she's doing is incorrect but i'm not cuz women who love the best will come to great stylist like me & cheap & ignorant women will continue to use videos like this
@BlackBuddha777 Good thing she almost NEVER applies heat to her hair. She doesn't even want to straighten it out. :/ Another thing, It's not bad to be cheap but if being smart by not paying a hell of a load of money on hair you know how to do by yourself is ignorant... then I don't even want to know what you call stupid or moronic -_-
@Mission145Sexy On average a "trim" is between $35 to $65 depending on where you go, if you want the best you have to pay for the best. Moreover, if you consider $35 a lot of money then i wonder how could you've possibly obtain access to a computer. :o/
@BlackBuddha777 Excuse you, I said that if it works to do your hair by yourself and she has achieved long length and healthy hair that is even curly, Why pay someone $35-$65 to do what you already know how to. Also, I HAVE a iphone4s, a Laptop, and an ipod touch. I didn't need your AMAZING deduction skills to tell me what I don't ( but obviously clearly) do have... Thank You -_-
@Mission145Sexy Healthy? What's healthy? Have you been professionally trained in the science of Trichology? No! You can't tell if someone's hair is healthy from just looking at it because it goes a lot more deeper than just appearance, If you're not a licensed cosmetologist or Trichologist you can't make such a judgement. This is fact and not opinion so spin it any way you want but it is what it is. I guess ignorance is truly bliss for some.
@BlackBuddha777 I NEVER made the call her hair was healthy but she has said it many a time. I have had licensed cosmetologist look at my hair and mess it up every which way because they thought that they KNEW what they were doing, which was clearly not the case. So even when it comes down to cosmetologist and such it is also opinion. Unless you look at hair with a microscope, and I doubt that I have ever went somewhere with a microscope.
@Mission145Sexy Again, ignorance, you're judging an entire industry of millions of trained professionals based on your experience at a low priced ghetto establishment. It's the same situation when you decide to seek a healthcare professional for a serious medical condition: you do your research before selecting one. Moreover, there are certain test that can be done by a trained cosmetologist to verify the condition of your scalp and hair without using a microscope, again ignorance is bliss..:o/
@BlackBuddha777 (cont.) Plus I believe this video is geared towards people who either were just curious or actually wanted to trim their own hair. -_- NOBODY sit down and made you watch this video. Commenting on something you don't agree on is fine to do but not when you are insulting someone in the process. So I believe if you feel that strongly about people but cutting their own hair you should make your own videos on how you do such a process w/o applying any heat or anything. THANK YOU -_-
@BlackBuddha777 I said " you should make your own videos on how you do such a process w/o applying any heat or anything. " I never said that you should teach someone on something only professionals do. But I can clearly see that you only believe you are right ( IGNORANCE ) so I have nothing more to say to you -_-
@BlackBuddha777 Wow, just when I thought I didn't have anything else to say. I DO KNOW what I am talking about and in all honesty you do too. We just have different opinions on it. Once again thinking your superior by insulting someone else. -_- Glad to see that makes you feel better. Good Luck in life
Greetings:) I would like to thank you for your time on making these ed. videos. I recently started making videos about my natural hair journey and would like to invite you to my channel, subscribe, and that way you can be up-2-date with future videos I post :)
there is more to cutting hair properly than this. it's important to use scissors made for cutting hair because they are sharper. if you cut with a dull edge you risk CAUSING split ends. also you should never cut your hair on an angle. because you risk exposing more of your hair's cortex which can lead to breakage.
@MsShanii09 i got mine from sally's. it comes in a box. to modify it, you can slide the rubbery red part out and remove every row of the white teeth. i can't remember how much it was...maybe 15 bucks or so.
i wish i would have watched this....my hair was getting long and i went to this stupid lady, and she cut soooo much off. i know my hair is healthy and not a lot needed to come off. at least my hair will grow back but geez...it sumtimes makes you wonder if the stereotypes are true....some people are too scissor happy!
Im glad i found this! YAY! I was at first clueless about if i had to still trim my hair. I have been natural for only 2 months now that i know you can trim it within 6 to 8 months thats just AWESOME!
Hi Naptural85, I'm just a little over a year into my natural hair journey and I just saw your vid on trimming your own hair. Can you please talk about how you keep single strand knots to a minimal? I'm staring to notice them more often now that my hair is shoulder length (when stretched). They are preventing my hair from growing as fast as it once did. Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks in advance!
how do you keep your hair healthy and avoid damaged hair or split ends or breakage? I have really thick med-long 3c/4a hair that tends to be dry. Thanks!
Thanks love your vids! Some people say cut your your hair when it's dry! I really dont want to blow dry my hair right now after doing a deep conditioning treatment because it got a little fried by the sun after cutting the grass. gonna try it cutting it wet!
I'm adding this video to my favorites. I use to trim every 6-8 weeks, but my hair wasn't showing any growth. So now, I trim when I can feel my hair needs it, about every 6 months. I've seen major growth, since changing the times I trim my hair. Plus I do a deep conditioner every week. :) Thanks for video!
I'm Asian, and I am dying to try this! Most videos I find says "how to cut your own hair" but really, I want to TRIM MY OWN HAIR. Thank you for your time to post this. :)
@the09conradz not necessarily...if you had bad ends like split ends, then you should definately cut them, but if there's nothing wrong with your hair then you don't need to
Trimming my hair is one of the most painful things for me to do bc i c how much its grown but at the same time i c these gross dry crunchy ends so i hav no choice.
@periz21 goody sells them I bought mine at Walgreens I've also seen them at Wal-Mart. Hope that helps. You can also get them from the Denman website. They are relatively inexpensive. Hope that helps.
Wow. I ususally do the same thing, but I straighten each section before I trim it with the straightening iron. You have a beautiful natural hair by the way!
i tried this technique, didn't work for me lol. i think it's because my hair's too long and curly. helpful video though, i'll definitely be showing my cousins
I've been looking for a video like this! Thank you so much for posting. A couple of people told me I had to blow dry and straighten my hair first in order to trim my ends! WHAT?! That's why I haven't done it yet because I didn't want to go through the trouble of doing all that just to cut my ends! So glad I found this video! Thanks for letting me know that I can trim my ends without having to go through all that mess! ;-)
I've got a question about scissors used. WhenI go to the hairdress and my straightened hair is trimmed, they talk about super sharp expensive scissors that won't cause further breakage. Which scissors do you use????
I am so afraid to cut my hair this way. I'm always afraid that I will cut off to much or that I won't be able to tell what needs to be clipped. I do two strand twists in small sections and cut off the thin weathered ends.
I wanted to tell you that I've bee natural for 7 years now (for 6.5 of those years, I wore weaves). I've been wearing my natural hair out for a few months, and I needed to trim my ends because they were getting difficult to comb through/manage. Your video helped me tremendously! I trimmed my hair last night. I immediately saw a difference in my two strand twists and how they curled at the end after the trim. Thank you SO MUCH! You're making this natural hair journey easy and fun for me.
Hello! Big fan- lately I have been unable to view your video on my IPad. I get a message that says the author does not allow playback on IPad. Is there something you are doing differently when you upload. Thank you
Your hair always has so much sheen. Do you think it has more to do with your diet, or what you put in your hair? You mention shea butter in this video. Do you use anything else?
Are those regular scissors?!

i tried this technique, didn't work for me lol. i think it's because my hair's too long and curly. helpful video though, i'll definitely be showing my cousins
DanyelleElizebeth 10 months ago
I tried this method when I trimed my hair yesterday. I think it works best on dry natural hair.

what if ur hair is not long enough were u can pull the middle and back of ur hair to ur face?
superiorone23 10 months ago
@superiorone23 : Maybe you can do mini twists and just clip the ends of it.
shatacia 10 months ago
I think you should straighten it because when you comb you hair it gets kinda straight and it looks really pretty

@pinkysux her hair is amazing idk what your talking about

@cmetube1 yeah sometimes I'm not able to view certain videos from the peeps I subscribe to. Wondering if it's Apple or YouTube...

I am so afraid to cut my hair this way. I'm always afraid that I will cut off to much or that I won't be able to tell what needs to be clipped. I do two strand twists in small sections and cut off the thin weathered ends.

thank you for doing this video :) it helped me a lot!!

I am about to give this a try. Thanks for the video. I really don't want to go to a salon just to trim hair.

Hey, you said you used a "modified denmin brush." Um, what makes it modified? And is the unmodified better?
gggrinz 1 year ago
@gggrinz I looked at the brush with the video stilled. It looks as if she removed every other row of bristles on it. I'm going to try it!
whilome 1 year ago
@whilome You are right, she mentioned that she did that in one of her other videos.

lol omg I though that I was the only one who trimmed my hair like this.

could you recommend a good pair of shears? also as far as sharpness, how can I tell they are sharp? I heard no gap between the blades is good.

Your hair always has so much sheen. Do you think it has more to do with your diet, or what you put in your hair? You mention shea butter in this video. Do you use anything else?
