VNC is different than remote desktop, remote desktop is a terminal services client which means that there cannot be multiple users. If you get an VNC client like "vine server" for mac this allows you to connect to a computer while a person is still using it. You can hijack their mouse and stuff and they wont know what hit em!

I'm wondering if the same settings work for computers on different routers (e.g:. a Mac in L.A. and a PC in N.Y.).

I've been trying to connect via VNC to another computer on a different router but I'm told I have to use port forwarding but I don't even know if that will do the trick. Got any suggestions?

Open port 5800, 5900, 5500, that should forward to the Local Machine's IP.
