The short answer is that the addition of a small amount of clay greatly adds to the longevity of the wall, by keeping moisture away from the straw fibers. The technique is not new -- there are straw-clay buildings for example still in service in Germany which are over 400 years old. Our advanced method provides good insulation value (R-21 for a nominal 12" thickness) as well as some thermal mass effect.
