@xAlan714x No, I never liked baseball. It's a game for pussies.
Ian Laparriere missed a single period getting 100 stiches and finished the game meanwhile Sammy Sosa missed 15 games because of a bad sneeze.
Martin St. Louis had 3 teeth knocked out, finished the game, had a root canal the next day, didn't miss a game. Got the teeth knocked back out, had them cemented in so he could finish.
Kevin Mitchell hurt himself on a microwaved donut, broke a tooth and missed 2 weeks with a root canal.
It's not a sport, men play sports and men don't miss out because they hurt themself lifting a pillow ( Brandon Inge ) have a blister ( virtually every pitcher ), hurt themselves sneezing (Ricky Romero) or break their leg skipping across home plate (Kendry Morales)
Calling a baseball player an elite athlete is like calling Hitler a humanitarian.
@rrtodd95 It Seems to me You know alot About The Sport and Yet Still Hate it. I For One Love This Sport. You'll Feel The Same Way That I'm Feeling if You Really Love This Sport. I Mean I Actually Know Alot of People Who Hate Football With Passion, and I Disagree With Them. If You Hate Baseball So Much, That's Fine With Me. I mean Your Just One Person. It's Still Americas Pastime.
@xAlan714x I was very good at baseball. I was forced to play it in school for gym class but refused to join the school team in spite of 7 years of nagging by the coach.
I competed in actual sports. I was on the wrestling team, hockey team, football team, basketball team and lacrosse team.
@3jcorpus I'd like to see any baseball player, bench 300 pounds, run sprints, take a puck off the face get stiched up and carry on. or deflect a 100 mile an hour slap shot with the tip of the blade of a hockey stick.
Or fight when they do something pussy like bean someone.
Baseball players go on the DL for eye lash injuries, blisters, and pillow fight related injuries.
Hockey players and football players go down with concussions and bones sticking out of the skin.
@rrtodd95 Cal Ripken and Lou Gehrig played for 14 and 17 years straight, without missing a single game. Find me someone in any other sport that will do that.
@Oceanoacifica1968.... Really?!??? Jeter better than Ruth????...Ruth was a PITCHER!!! He would be hitting cleanup on any team in modern days and smoked cigars in the duggout.... Jeter though great pales next to babe....
@NowKillYourself I agree that Babe ruth was an amazing player but barry bonds is a black porson and he wouldnt have been able to play back then so I dont think that they should be compared
@617AV85892...you contradict yourself... I love Ruth and consider him one of the greatest... But not abusing his body??? Dude was smoking cigars in the dugout....clear indication of no steroids but being healthy... Not so much... that is part of what makes him so great...and being a pitcher...
@Austin7948 Also, lifetime batting average:Ruth .342/Bonds .298.Lifetime slugging average:Ruth .690/Bonds .607.Lifetime on base percentage:Ruth .474/Bonds .444.Home run titles:Ruth 12/Bonds 2.The Babe is better with those stats too!
@Com6in3d.... Thank you for understanding history!!! Though maybe they should bring back the booze and cigars...starting pitchers were throwing into extra innings and guys like babe were a threat at the plate..hahaha
There were no steriods in The Babe's era...they were invented in the 50's...There were alot of alcoholics however....maybe that gave Ruth an advantage...Barry Bonds is a wanna be...Ruth is a baseball god...
@btuc401 Ruth was out of the game in the early thirties ! Ruth was the greatest ever considering he like Mickey Mantle abused their bodies and never trained or worked out. Bonds, McGuire, Sosa, and the rest of the roid abusing self indulged A-holes palein comparison to ruth. None of the roid users would even have half the homeruns they had, and Bonds was and still is the biggest a**hole out there he did'nt sign autographs for kids . No HOF for ant of the roid users
@filling24... Learn your baesball....the "steroid era".... With both hitters and pitchers started post strike.... Before that there were pitchers throwing 17 innings....and oh yeah....babe....as a pitcher also a slugger....smoking cigars in the duggout....he was totally using steroids????same as mays????
@filling24 a) I highly doubt that guys smoking cigars and having pre game shots are doing steroids b) the steroid era started mainly because of the strike.... And the MLB turning their heads to get baseball back on the market
Rumors are that he actually pointed the bat at the pitcher and just said Im gunna hit this one right down your throat, idk maybe but i think he called his shot
great player, goes without saying. he never had to face pitchers like we have today. aka any non-white pitchers that have controlled MLB pitching for the last 30 years. Even today, CC, Mariano, Pedro, all of those dudes. "barry bonds never"? Dudes are throwing on average 15 MPH faster these days then back then. ..the difference between farm league and the show.
If pitchers would have thrown 15 mph faster back then, the hitters of that era would have adapted. Everything is relative to its era. The babe played in a time where ball parks where huge and against pitchers that had an array of pitches that are now illegal. As far as calling the shot, some say he was just stretching out his arm. This was filmed by a fan in the park, not an official newsreel camera.
@lenox234 even if that were true, they would have adapted but not hit as much. come on. 15 mph is the difference between playing house league baseball and triple A or mlb.
@spritelyhere You've got to look at other aspects. The bat Babe used as opposed to Barry's. The ball Babe hit compared to Barry's. Ever heard of the live and dead ball? Pick up a baseball made before 1940 and compare it to the soft core dynamic balls of today. Hitting 60 homers in 1927 compared to 73 in 2001, regardless of 15 mph differences, is a HUGE difference in difficulty. Besides, Babe Ruth's baseball seasons were 8 games shorter than Bond's, essentially giving him less time to hit HR's.
not to mention though the HUGE differences in field sizes and the steroid factor of today. The babe is far superior to any player to ever play the game.
Ruth would have adapted by using a lighter bat and shortening his swing. You can't teach the kind of hand/eye coordination that he had and it would translate to any era. Besides, just becuase a pitcher throws harder doesn't mean he's a better pitcher (reference Maddox, Glavine, Warren Spahn, etc).
@vgr112261 I agree.Ruth`s bats generally weighed around 42 ounces as compared to Bond`s 31 ounce bat!He could just switch to a 34 ounce and swing it like a feather.Hell,Ruth could have used one of Bond`s bats as a toothpick after eating a dozen hot dogs!
@spritelyhere lets also take into consideration there was no hitting coaches like there are today back then, steroids and any other performance enhancing drugs, let babe ruth play in this time period and have the hitting coaches that all MLB players use from this time and he still would be the greatest hitter of all time
@filling24.... Yeah no steroids in that era and now.... Pitchers have the upper hand and I recall Ruth pitched....pitchers may have thrown with less velocity but the pitch count was WAY higher....his excellence all that much more... Find a guy in this age of baseball who could hit like him...
@fleetfox84 i know he was good in his era, but hold up, where are you getting this info that there were no steroids? did they test them back then? didnt think so , so im afraid you cant bring steroids/PED's into this arguement, because they could have equally been a factor
Ruth/Bonds/McGuire debate is stupid... there was one style of pitching back then. Ozzie Smith could have hit 80HRs in a season if he played in the 20s! Ruth was great in his era, but each era has there own conditions... Bonds/McGuire was great in theirs.
The Babe NEVER admitted that he pointed to centerfield as a warning that the next pitch would head into those seats. It was the press's and fans imagination. Babe was pointing to pitcher Root and saying, "I dare you to throw one down the middle."
He hit the next pitch into the seats and it was so dramatic, that Ruth decided to retain the lore instead of coming clean. All it was was for a "make good ink" homer and that was that. Remember, he could have struck out too so why risk reputation?
Only Roger Maris stands tall next to the Babe. All these juicers these days (McGuire, Sosa, Bonds) have disgraced the dignity of the game and the sacred records that have been taken away.
Only Roger Maris stands tall next to the Babe. All these juicers these days (McGuire, Sosa, Bonds) have disgraced the dignity of the game and the sacred records that have been taken away.
@ Sergioslpert, bonds is a roid freak, he had high quality equipment that was much better than what ruth had, and he suck dick in the feild. Now tell me how bonds was better
You very clearly know absolutely nothing about baseball. Barry Bonds, although not the greatest of all time, is easily top 5. He had one of the most compact and fast swings in baseball with an extraordinary eye of the strike zone. He's in the top five in homers, RBI, OPS, runs, and walks. It's certainly impressive to be first, and Bonds is first in both homers and walks. He's also in the top 30 in stolen bases, and was a 40/40 player before his alleged steroid use.
ruth said in his book he wrote before he died that he was pointing at the pitcher but people say he was pointing at the wall either way it goes it was a great hit live forever george herman ruth
@OwnYourAss11 i said that he was pointing to one of the cub players, he was complaining to the umpire, cubs hof catcher gabby hartnett said he wasnt calling his shot the cubs pitcher said ruth wasnt calling his shot in my mind ive always said that 2 is better than 1 just cuz ruth is the "sultan of swat" doesnt mean u should believe everyword he had said
Whether you believe Barry took steroids or not you can't take away his great "eye" for seeing the ball. Steroids do not help you to see better! And what about the fact that almost everyone took "greenies" from the end of WWII until very recently!
@maddash24seven The players today may have more muscle mass but not necessarily in better shape, depending on what time period you're thinking of. From the late 1800s to the 1950s, players had jobs other than playing ball. And a lot of jobs were labor jobs such as mining, factory, farming, you name it. Plus, the game was played differently back then.
And Ruth was great. He saved baseball after the white sox scandal. If it weren't for him, baseball could have fallen apart.
@maddash24seven The baseball playerswho take steroids and workout today with weights to bulk up doesnt mean that they are better players because in the history books the longest homeruns were hit by players from the past better father than todaysplayers hit them who didnt workout or take steroids Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle and Frank Howard and Willie Stargell and Reggie Jackson back in the 60's hit some of the longest homeruns of all time for out of shape.
Comparing Ruth to his PEERS is the best way to appreciate his talent. He hit more homers than most TEAMS in 1921. In 1920 Ruth hit 54 homers. The NL leader hit 15!! He was among the best PITCHERS in his era, holding a record scoreless inning streak in the World Series for 40 years. He had a lifetime ERA of 2.2 in over 150 decisions, winning over 20 games twice and 18 games another season and the only "juice" he used was from a 12 oz can of beer.
Mays was good but he had 2,000+ more at bats and only had 500 more hits 17 more doubles 4 more triples had less runs less home runs less rbi and less walks and never won 20 games as pitcher.....ruth did it twice
This was not a "called shot".he pointed at a guy making fun of him in one inning, then a couple innings later he hit a home run to right field,he pointed to left field.case closed.
@GeorgeVreelandHill Willie Mays is the greatest because he was a better overall hitter,a way better fielder, and a way faster runner, his arm was also better.getting my point?
@verbenco Ruth also won 97 games as a pitcher....Ruth held the World Series record for most consecutive shutout innings for over 40 years...Cobb never threw a pitch in the bigs....no one compares to Ruth as an overall player....nobody.
@Com6in3d All good arguments for Ruth, but as a long suffering Tigers fan, i must still go with Cobb as he invented "scientific" baseball. Believe me, it sometimes hurts to make this argument as Ruth was certainly a better man which doesn't say much when compared with Cobb who was a mean SOB.
@GeorgeVreelandHill , he saved baseball after the Black Sox scandal in 1919 and single handedly created the NY Yankee franchise. The man was close to obese, screwed like a bunny, drank like a sailor and smoked the rottennest cigars possible. The last two gave him the oral cancer that killed him. He never needed batting practice and despite his lumbering physiognomy, he played a very good right field. Babe was the epitome of a natural and certainly was biggest attraction in the history of MLB.
@GeorgeVreelandHill you lied. there are wayy better players now adays, but look at the pitching..... they pitch 90's when back then they pitched like 70'sand they didnt play since they were young , proffessionally.
Some say that the "called shot" was nothing of the sort. Maybe it was...maybe it wasn't. Some things are better left alone. Let us enjoy a bit of pure Americana, for pete's sake!
GWX he also saved baseball after the 1919 Blacksox scandal and brought people back to baseball. Maybe a new kind of baseball (the offense-heavy, multi-home run style versus John McGraw's (NY Giants) 'inside' style - defense, stealing, speed, bunting etc) No matter... Ruth was the GREATEST (as opposed to the 'best') of all time, no doubt!!!!
Yesterday I asked, "Does anyone know what pitcher has the best won-loss percentage against the Yankees?" No one answered because no one knew therefore I'll tell you. Babe Ruth.
"The real thing?" Bullshit. Ruth never called any homer into the bleachers. He was pointing to the pitcher and challenging him to put one over the plate. By coincidence, the next pitch by Root was over the plate and was hit into the center field bleachers in game 3-1932 WS at WRIGLEY FIELD. The video poster makes one think it was at Yankee Stadium. Everything that happened was always ambiguous and Ruth saw great notoriety for maintaining the myth of the "called shot." IT WAS INDEED A MYTH!
@KingXanthar, no in 200 years, word will have it that Babe hit 714 homers without a bat. However, when you look at his stats as a pitcher plus his stats as a slugger and how, after the Black Sox scandal he saved the sport, there can be no question about his being the greatest player of all time. His overall talent was beyond monumental and he was damn nice to the kids, too.A greater baseball legend never was nor will be. William Bendix did a nice job too.
he's better then aaron and bonds he hit more homers then entire teams with balls covered with dirt and spit and he did hungover and drunk with a lot of fat no steriods
@kevdaman9 He didnt hit balls covered with spit. That was gone during his best days as a a hitter. He wasnt always hungover and drunk. If your talking about the offensive side. Bonds stole bases and hit more homers. Hank hit more homers. So better..maybe not people always give the old guys the edge
I respect Ruth, but if I were the pitcher that he supposedly did this to (Charlie Root) I'd have thrown the ball right at his head. Ruth or no Ruth, doing something like calling your shot really shows up the pitcher -- that's why I think it never happened because Ruth being a former pitcher and a class guy would never do that to another player.
The fans were screaming and throwing stuff at him, there was alot of animosity between the 2 teams as well. I dont know why you think this is such a bad thing to do, think of how embarassing it would have been if he did that then struck out next pitch
@T1memaster Theres just things that you do and things that you don't do as an athlete. One of them is to "show up" or make an opposing athlete look bad - even if it's deserved. It's called sportsmanship and honor. However, IF Ruth did this, (and I really dont think he did in reality) then he should have been hit with a pitch - extremely hard to teach him a lesson. Again, Ruth never would have done this because by this time he was a veteran of over 16 seasons who would have known better.
You're right, and he didn't really call his shot. Root even said after the game that if he had, he'd have "put him on his ass." The Babe just played it for publicity and cash.
It's awesome that these legendary moments will always have our imagination. Now-a-days since there is so much technology with HD cameras and long range zoom lens', we''ll never have these kind of moments again.
taday's players are kids compared to the great Babe Ruth, ...he was in a higher class than todays sub par players compared to the greatest....Babe Ruth
babe was facing...same pitcher all week long... not like today , Pujolds will face 2-3 fresh arm each game.
Black people were not allowed... so caliber was low
Pitcher... were only pitching fast ball ( at 90 mph ) , curve , change up etc were not use until the years 50 ( Koufax ) some pitcher had 2-3 kind of pitch but 90% of time it s was fast ball ,
@KingXanthar there is but one Babe Ruth, the greatest ever....jealousy changes nothing...he was the man called the sultan of swat, he was before many great players such as Mantle, Williams and Joe D......he was also before drug enhancement and the criminal influence many players have today.......Try all you desire, THE BABE will remain as always, the man that built Yankee Stadium...
Babe was on heroin cocain and alcool by the way.. and it s was before the black man play in MLB..before Latina.. before pitcher was able to throw at 100mph.. before the pitcher was able to pitch a curve , a split , a change up etc..
so the caliber was very low
babe was facing same pitcher day after day ,. cause in that time , there was no releive... there was 3-4 pitcher in a team , and they was pitcher all the week long.
@KingXanthar shout shout, knock yourself out.......try as the government controlled school system does and attempt to rewrite history, you will fail.....Babe Ruth is and will always be known world wide as the greatest ever, regardless of what any poor soul that thinks any drug enhanced player today has done......Babe Ruth , best ever ....period
A batter boy asked Babe, you called that didn't you Babe? He was on HBO some years back. And he said, why? didn't you think I did? So, I guess he DID>
the pitcher who gave up the homer, charlie root ,even said "if ruth had pointed to center field, i would drill him in the ear". considering all the accounts, the way the cubs were geering ruth, i think it was true. even some yankees said that he was holding up two fingers and pointing at the cubs dugout.
@GannMan05 No. I don't think ho would stand a chance in todays MLB. The standards are a little different. He was the best of his TIME, that's for sure. I don't think the guys today would have made it in his time either. They get away with too much "CRAP" these days.
To appreciate fully how much the game has changed and how great Ruth and the other players of that time were, one should get a hold of the bats they used in those days. I bought one at a garage sale and took it out to give it a go. What in the name of corn on the cob? That thing must've been heavier than Oprah's lunchbox! To hit homeruns with that thing must've been the serious beeyotch! :)

@xAlan714x Baseball is not a sport.
A sport would suggest athleticism and grit.
Baseball has none of that. The pitchers are the biggest pussies in all of sports. They bean a guy then hide behind the team.
In real sports they look down on guys doing pussy shit like that.
Missing a playoff game because you have a blister is what wimps do.

Baseball not a sport? You my brother, are a tool.
kep1221 5 months ago
@xAlan714x I was very good at baseball. I was forced to play it in school for gym class but refused to join the school team in spite of 7 years of nagging by the coach.
I competed in actual sports. I was on the wrestling team, hockey team, football team, basketball team and lacrosse team.
I also boxed, kickboxed and played rugby.

Jim Marshal played 17 straight seasons 272 games in the NFL without missing a game.
AC Green played in the NBA not missing a game for 1192 games over a 15 year period.
Any of these accomplishments beats not missing a baseball game for 100 years.
For every Ripken & Gehrig there's 100 guys going down with eyelash injuries, blisters or pillow fight injuries.

SuperMattman5 8 months ago
great player, goes without saying. he never had to face pitchers like we have today. aka any non-white pitchers that have controlled MLB pitching for the last 30 years. Even today, CC, Mariano, Pedro, all of those dudes. "barry bonds never"? Dudes are throwing on average 15 MPH faster these days then back then. ..the difference between farm league and the show.
spritelyhere 8 months ago
If pitchers would have thrown 15 mph faster back then, the hitters of that era would have adapted. Everything is relative to its era. The babe played in a time where ball parks where huge and against pitchers that had an array of pitches that are now illegal. As far as calling the shot, some say he was just stretching out his arm. This was filmed by a fan in the park, not an official newsreel camera.
lenox234 8 months ago
@lenox234 even if that were true, they would have adapted but not hit as much. come on. 15 mph is the difference between playing house league baseball and triple A or mlb.
filling24 7 months ago
@spritelyhere You've got to look at other aspects. The bat Babe used as opposed to Barry's. The ball Babe hit compared to Barry's. Ever heard of the live and dead ball? Pick up a baseball made before 1940 and compare it to the soft core dynamic balls of today. Hitting 60 homers in 1927 compared to 73 in 2001, regardless of 15 mph differences, is a HUGE difference in difficulty. Besides, Babe Ruth's baseball seasons were 8 games shorter than Bond's, essentially giving him less time to hit HR's.
NowKillYourself 8 months ago
@NowKillYourself Exactly. The gear was inferior and the technology used to study pitchers is way better today.
xChiefRunningWater 7 months ago
@NowKillYourself
not to mention though the HUGE differences in field sizes and the steroid factor of today. The babe is far superior to any player to ever play the game.
dqwonjr 7 months ago
Ruth would have adapted by using a lighter bat and shortening his swing. You can't teach the kind of hand/eye coordination that he had and it would translate to any era. Besides, just becuase a pitcher throws harder doesn't mean he's a better pitcher (reference Maddox, Glavine, Warren Spahn, etc).
vgr112261 7 months ago
@vgr112261 I agree.Ruth`s bats generally weighed around 42 ounces as compared to Bond`s 31 ounce bat!He could just switch to a 34 ounce and swing it like a feather.Hell,Ruth could have used one of Bond`s bats as a toothpick after eating a dozen hot dogs!

@spritelyhere lets also take into consideration there was no hitting coaches like there are today back then, steroids and any other performance enhancing drugs, let babe ruth play in this time period and have the hitting coaches that all MLB players use from this time and he still would be the greatest hitter of all time
nfischetti21 6 months ago
@spritelyhere this was also before 85 percent of players took steroids,,,,,
TheVillian28 6 months ago
@filling24.... Yeah no steroids in that era and now.... Pitchers have the upper hand and I recall Ruth pitched....pitchers may have thrown with less velocity but the pitch count was WAY higher....his excellence all that much more... Find a guy in this age of baseball who could hit like him...
fleetfox84 8 months ago

You very clearly know absolutely nothing about baseball. Barry Bonds, although not the greatest of all time, is easily top 5. He had one of the most compact and fast swings in baseball with an extraordinary eye of the strike zone. He's in the top five in homers, RBI, OPS, runs, and walks. It's certainly impressive to be first, and Bonds is first in both homers and walks. He's also in the top 30 in stolen bases, and was a 40/40 player before his alleged steroid use.

Whether you believe Barry took steroids or not you can't take away his great "eye" for seeing the ball. Steroids do not help you to see better! And what about the fact that almost everyone took "greenies" from the end of WWII until very recently!
Cavemanconventioner 1 year ago
I don't if it's the steriods or whatever, but goddamn baseball players were in shit shape compared to today.
maddash24seven 1 year ago
@maddash24seven The players today may have more muscle mass but not necessarily in better shape, depending on what time period you're thinking of. From the late 1800s to the 1950s, players had jobs other than playing ball. And a lot of jobs were labor jobs such as mining, factory, farming, you name it. Plus, the game was played differently back then.
And Ruth was great. He saved baseball after the white sox scandal. If it weren't for him, baseball could have fallen apart.
Christophersboyd 1 year ago

He never needed batting practice and despite his lumbering physiognomy, he played a very good right field.

Oldcartoons571 1 year ago
I respect Ruth, but if I were the pitcher that he supposedly did this to (Charlie Root) I'd have thrown the ball right at his head. Ruth or no Ruth, doing something like calling your shot really shows up the pitcher -- that's why I think it never happened because Ruth being a former pitcher and a class guy would never do that to another player.
9999bigb 1 year ago
@9999bigb
The fans were screaming and throwing stuff at him, there was alot of animosity between the 2 teams as well. I dont know why you think this is such a bad thing to do, think of how embarassing it would have been if he did that then struck out next pitch
T1memaster 1 year ago
@T1memaster Theres just things that you do and things that you don't do as an athlete. One of them is to "show up" or make an opposing athlete look bad - even if it's deserved. It's called sportsmanship and honor. However, IF Ruth did this, (and I really dont think he did in reality) then he should have been hit with a pitch - extremely hard to teach him a lesson. Again, Ruth never would have done this because by this time he was a veteran of over 16 seasons who would have known better.
9999bigb 1 year ago
You're right, and he didn't really call his shot. Root even said after the game that if he had, he'd have "put him on his ass." The Babe just played it for publicity and cash.
