Thats really great, might sound even better with a vintage archtop and perhaps less sound deadening carpet next time? Maybe try recording without the carpet (more mid frequencies from a hard wood floor) and of course a darker coloured shirt would help the treble frequencies sustain just a little longer?
just wonderful...I am a big fan of quieter music all round...less is more..less is so much more...even in painting...art, life...in possessions and eating...good simple...meaning attention to all parts but selectively is more enjoyment for all the parts necessary to make you feel just awesome...slow down...turn off the damn cellphone, cancel your texting plan...lift your head up walking down the street...and just plan on taking more time getting anywhere..
Beautiful tone and very nice guitar work. As a guitar instructor being open to all styles of music is critical to capturing the students attention. Classical to rock and everything in between, when arranged well is all soothing to my ears.
This. Is just fantastic. The passionate, expressive nuances Mr. Otten puts into each interpretation of "Estate," "Days of Wine and Roses," and "Laurie," are irrevocably marvelous. People making music like this gives me hope for music in the future. Keep at it, Matt! You're a legend in the small town of Evergreen, Colorado.
And just reading those two top rated comments, makes me a little sad. The comments are spot on, I agree completely, but the fact that there is still this silly argument going around, is disappointing. Music like this should (and can) be appreciated by anyone, from any musical background. Believe it or not, but a lot of progressive metal bands these days are heavily influenced by music not unlike what you're listening to now.
@KiraPlaysGuitar This coming from a fan of Jazz, Metal, Deathcore, Blues, Hip-Hop, Dub Step, Rock, Classical, Psy-Trance, Samba, Salsa nad just about anything under the sun.
I like DatsiK as much as I like Bobby Jaspar or Whitechapel, Bach, Tech-N9ne, Infected Mushroom, Ozomatli, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley. The list truly does go on.
My iPod for example, has 13,228 songs and ever-counting. Inspiration can be drawn from the strangest of places, it's up to you to look for it however.
Matt never ceases to amaze me! I find this incedibly pleasant with smoothness and clever improvising, some musicians judge by how fast one plays, that was quickdraw in the old west. Now it's how intellectually stimulated one gets after hearing this that motivates others creativeness.
@SagesScents In addition to the names @skipheaton recommended, I would strongly suggest you listen to some George Benson (is instrumental stuff is better than his singing) and Jody Fisher. Both GREAT jazz guitarists.
Every people has different types and taste of music. And some improvise and may invent another genre. It is not important if they please other people. What's far more important is they feel joy hearing there own genre or impress different kinds of feelings that would let there heart be risen.
We all play guitar right? We all play different styles, right?
Who is the "guitar god" that said HOW to play is only one way? I use jazz in metal all the time, and who said you can't? I use metal in jazz, for all I care. It's just how the friggin song/ tune sounds, it's not a definite genre in guitar. Hell, pump up some classical on an electric with distortion, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference (unless you know the composers and their tendancies.) I'm just saying, play your guitar, man
People, people, people, music is subjective not objective there is no right nor wrong, if it sounds right to you, then its right for you. so just stop with all the arguing and just enjoy the music. It's a beautiful piece(again in my opinion ), just accept that not everyone is the same and will have an opinion, you will never win an argument on an internet page with some one you know and will never meet. all i know is that we all share a pasion for music so why not just try help each one another
Wow, it's so rare to see a rational, objective person on YT. I agree. Music is about rhythm, enjoying beats that provoke emotion. Music is about FEELS GOOD, MAN. So chill out.
If you don't mind... Could you please recommend a few jazz artists for me? I'm starting to LOVE jazz, and would like to hear different artists perfom it..
@SagesScents Kenny Burrell, Martijn VanIterson, Robert Conti, Phillip Catherine, Jimmy Bruno, Pat Metheny, Ulf Wakenuis, WES MONTGOMERY, JOE PASS, Grant Green. These are all guitarists, and there are so many more.
is that guitar different from an electric? If an electric was used for jazz would it have the same outcome when played? will it still have its beautiful soul effect or not?
how can ppl dislike this!??? im 16 but jazz has always been my dream genre to play on acoustic. I love playing jazz its sexy!!!! haha 117 screamo immature ppl just happened to come upon this and didnt hear disortion lol
don't group us all together like that mate, metal is my passion, and yes most of it is screamed not sung, but its mostly about the guitar and drums anyway. i love jazz as much as the next guy, so dont assume that every dislike is from someone with a background in heavier music just because you don't understand that particular genre. and to call us all immature in a comment like yours is downright ironic.
i'll paraphrase: people can like "screamo" AND jazz, don't be ignorant.
@Jax0rthemaggot Um actually metal (the good metal) is sang. Slayer, Anthrax, Motley Crue, Diamond Head (I consider them metal) and many others are sang not scramed. Also, metal is greatly influenced by Jazz. (IE: the scales, and the drum playing.
@Jax0rthemaggot i could not agree more. i was in a metal band throughout high school, i also performed jazz with some older guys i took lessons from. before that i played gospel, bluegrass, and country. i'm now in college studying classical guitar performance and plan on switching to jazz for the rest of my time in school. not all "metal heads" are a bunch of uneducated, untalented idiots. some of us actually have a passion for music. i'll also paraphrase: don't judge, observe, respect the music
@Jax0rthemaggot I listen to black metal and ambient music as seperate genres. As far as I'm aware they are at opposite ends of the "smooth spectrum". Hell, the two have even made contact and created quite possibly the harshest dream-like soundscape possible. I also listen to classical music, a genre that shares so much in common with metal. It confuses people when I mention that because they judge it by tone.
@MorkaGraven it bothers me when people compare metal to classical. Sure, they both use the melodic minor scale frequently but rarely do you hear metal that incorporates the use of multiple types of modes that allow the music to travel. Metal is very technical and i appreciate it but it is very atonal compared to a classical peice
@gabrielhuanosto Judge not, lest ye be judged my good man. Don't assume that people who like something out of context with jazz came here to hate. There was never anything wrong with an open-mind, so why assume with yours closed?
excellent , it kind of reminds me of my favorite fingerstyle player, pierre bensusan. But you have real FEEL when you play. real feel. you know, people's style evolves over the years. Don't lose that Feel!!!! you really do it well. !!
One of the most exquisite solo's ever played! I can't say enough about how I enjoyed this! So all I'll say is thanks! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"
Check out this video on the possibly greatest guitar player of all time, Wes Montgomery. watch?v=BLsoz58946k
I don't know what he had but it was not theory. One thing he had was exceptional ears as you can see if you find the "Legends of Jazz Guitar" about him.
Another thing is that jazz did not grow out of theory.
The attack on Justin Bieber was a success! I think one more would finish the job, on August 4th (a month from the first). To any musicians, fans of good music (almost anything but pop), and people who just don't like JB, go to his 'Baby' video on said date, dislike and comment, denounce. Not just metal fans this time: classical, jazz, rock, metal, Opeth, disco, techno, reggae, blues, etc. fans leave a comment ending with -MM for Music Militia. Spread this comment LIKE WILDFIRE
that "soul" everyone speaks about that you need to play the guitar like "a god" is overestimated, I think that "soul" grows with time, hard work and A LOT of theory, of course there are very few exceptions
I've never heard of this guitar before. It's both very beautiful sounding and looking. You did a wonderful job making it sing. Just out of curiosity, what type of amp are you using?
wow... someone please help. for jazz solo, do you use the typical blues scale for impro???? im pretty sure that its not, but please tell me what the name of the jazz scale is? so i can find it on TABS :P
i love jazz, and i rock at blues impro. but this is just something else. something beyond heaven.
@LapRound you use every scale. you can use the blues scale, all your modes, major and minor and even pentatonic if you feel like it. it really depends on the chords your playing over.
@LapRound TABS? you wanna play jazz and you're talking about TABS? if you wanna play jazz, you gotta know your theory, do you have any idea how many key changes there can be on a jazz piece? if you learn the scale (wich the commonly used one is any Melodic Minor scale btw) by tabs, and you don't know where to play it at what time, it doesn't matter if you master the scale, you'll sound like crap, on the other hand, know your theory and you'll sound awesome, always, any style, any song
@thediem667 i really dunno what to do :/ i suck at theory and i cant just learn it through tabs... all i've done the past 3 years has been improvising to blues. never had lessons in theory :/
@thediem667 "know your theory and you'll sound awesome, always, any style, any song" This is sooo false...Then it would be too easy. Anyone can learn theory, it takes someone with a truly musical heart to really touch the soul of another human through music. It takes talent to express emotion through sound. Especially in Jazz man it takes heart & soul....

Check out this video on the possibly greatest guitar player of all time, Wes Montgomery. watch?v=BLsoz58946k
I don't know what he had but it was not theory. One thing he had was exceptional ears as you can see if you find the "Legends of Jazz Guitar" about him.
Another thing is that jazz did not grow out of theory.

HELLO EVERYONE

LapRound 1 year ago
@LapRound you use every scale. you can use the blues scale, all your modes, major and minor and even pentatonic if you feel like it. it really depends on the chords your playing over.
MrAlfredocolon 1 year ago
@MrAlfredocolon thanks =)
i'll try improvising to some jazz now.... =)
LapRound 1 year ago
@LapRound TABS? you wanna play jazz and you're talking about TABS? if you wanna play jazz, you gotta know your theory, do you have any idea how many key changes there can be on a jazz piece? if you learn the scale (wich the commonly used one is any Melodic Minor scale btw) by tabs, and you don't know where to play it at what time, it doesn't matter if you master the scale, you'll sound like crap, on the other hand, know your theory and you'll sound awesome, always, any style, any song
thediem667 1 year ago 30
@thediem667 oh well... i think you're right cause i cant improvise to any jazz song yet :/ and my theory sucks... REALLY!
LapRound 1 year ago
@thediem667 i really dunno what to do :/ i suck at theory and i cant just learn it through tabs... all i've done the past 3 years has been improvising to blues. never had lessons in theory :/
LapRound 1 year ago
@thediem667 "know your theory and you'll sound awesome, always, any style, any song" This is sooo false...Then it would be too easy. Anyone can learn theory, it takes someone with a truly musical heart to really touch the soul of another human through music. It takes talent to express emotion through sound. Especially in Jazz man it takes heart & soul....
