You Americans are strange people... Listening such a music, you are arguing what Frank, Palin and even Regan said... Fuck the holocaust, fuck AIDS, and fuck political debates...
the intricate ensemble lines are always my favorite part of zappa's music, i like the vocal choir thing at the end, the one with the lydian flavor (which this whole piece has)...
Saw these guys with Napolean in 2008 & I got tears in my eyes listening to Frank's tunes with No.1 son on guitar. I get misty just watching the vids. Frank was such a part of my musical life since I was 14. What a beautiful legacy & that Dweezil can do this is a testament to daddy's upbringing!
Frank may be gone, but I don't think any composer/musical genius and all round great guy has had someone so brilliant jump straight into his boots and nail it so perfectly.
I don't understand english well enough to get every facet of Zappa's lyrics, but this is most excellent music, I mean, it's better than so many things I heard in my life.
Wow !!!! Going to see them in Sept in FL. I saw Frank about ten times including the show at the Palladium in NYC that was filmed for MTV. Used to sit around for hours listening to low quality bootlegs ( which he hated) just to hear more. Still bought all his legit releases. For a few moments there it seemed like Dweezil channeled his dad. Love and miss Frank always.
@Ebby12ny Keep in mind that you'll probably not see any special guests (like Napoleon). But Dweezil's core band is EXCELLENT! I saw them last fall in Niagara Falls. 'Going to see them again in August. Great show! you'll love it.
p.s. I think it's great what Dweezil is doing to keep it alive. Anyone who thinks that his intentions are less than genuine is full of shit. I hung around after the show neer the stage. He came out and chatted with everyone! Great guy!
@Dudestar321 I was going to go to that show but I'm going to the August 2 show at Turning Stone (Verona, NY). It's a double bill ZPZ w/ Return to Forever. I think ZPZ is the opener and not vice-versa. Anyway, have fun. I saw ZPZ last year @ the Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls. Hung out by the stage after the show ended and Dweezil came out and chatted. It was cool.
From another planet guys. If Dweezil is now at 80% of Frank's abilities.......he still will be lightyears ahead of the rest! Love these guys. Do't sit around and go see them
The solo to Inca Roads has always been my favourite solo of all time. To see it completely reborn been Dweezil, while keeping the original character, was marvelous. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this.
I saw Zappa play Zappa when they came to Brisbane, Australia. It was the greatest concert I have ever been to. My only regret is being born too late to see Frank play.
@LuneyTune72 as a religious freak and proud I just want to say that I am sure God loves Frank for giving his creatures so much beauty and laughter and is consulting with him on many important heavenly decisions. With that said, could someone tell me why Dweezil's guitar is plugged in at both ends?
WTF is it with you Sara Palin haters? You guys are unhinged.
You may disagree with her politically, but what has she ever done to hurt anyone? Nothing whatsoever. Unless, of course, you drink the Kool Aid of the fringe left kooks who think anyone to the right of Noam Chomsky is dangerous.
Fact is, Frank considered himself a Libertarian, and sometimes even referred to himself as a conservative (there are recorded quotes). That means he believed in SMALL GOVERNMENT. Just like Sara.
@UncleIrv Chomsky prefers small government as well, referred to himself as a conservative a few times - also calls himself a libertarian :). The problem is now you have no idea what conservatives *used* to be. I don't think Sarah believes in anything but money, just like most of the democrats too. She just tries less to hide it.
Chomsky is about as libertarian as Stalin. OTOH, Zappa has a legitimate claim to be libertarian.
Your assessment of Sara is harsh, but I won't argue politics in a Zappa video. The only reason I brought it up is because it amazes me to find EVERYWHERE, including an off-topic Zappa video, these hate spewing people.
I think Zappa was a bit unhinged in a few of his opinions--very few. But he believed in free speech. I don't think he would WISH SOMEONE DEAD because of their views.
@UncleIrv 'Chomsky is about as libertarian as Stalin' - Ridiculous rhetoric. Chomsky stands up for free speech just as Zappa did - for everyone. Look around, one of few intellectuals brave enough to stand up for holocaust deniers who are JAILED for saying things. He does not believe what they say, but that they should have the power to say it. I appreciate your concern over hate spewing people, but there is a new breed of conservative now and it's far uglier than youtube comments.
First, there is not a single person in the US who is jailed FOR being a holocaust denier. See, that's prevented by something called the CONSTITUTION.
Second, support for the Constitution is the single biggest core belief of Conservatives! They would be the LAST to jail anyone for speech! It's LIBERALS who constantly push for speech codes.
Third, Chomsky is a STATIST. That means he sees the Constitution as an IMPEDIMENT to leftist progress.
There is not a single shred of evidence that Sara Palin is "crazy." Just because you disagree politically with someone does not mean they're crazy.
And even with all his undeniable musical genius, Zappa held some wacky ideas. For example, he believed wholeheartedly that AIDS was created by the CIA. That puts him in the kook fringe of conspiracy theorists.
@UncleIrv maybe crazy isn't the right word maybe just stupid. but besides since zappa was libertarian he would support gay marriage and abortion while palin definetely doesn't. as for the AIDS thing i doubt that's true. i would also say though that by today's standard of conservatives zappa wouldn't be conservative. he also regean's policies would lead America towards a facist theocracy.
I do not support her for president, but Palin is neither crazy nor stupid. Have you ever heard of POLITICS? You are believing the propaganda of her opposition.
The AIDS thing is POSITIVELY true. There are videos of Frank saying it on YT.

@murvon Why are you mentioning those two people in the same sentence? Why not use Lady Gaga or some other marginally talented commercial creation in your comment?
I've been a Zappa fan since 1972, was lucky enough to see him live three times. I also voted for McCain/Palin. Oh nevermind.....
The solos are nice, but I think the real star here is Napoleon. Although he sings it down an octave, he nails every crazy interval, retains a pleasing voice with lots of breath support, and still comes across with all the confidence of a great showman. I can see why Frank hired him on sight, way back when.
I think he really wants to play like his father did but he doesn't have the same technic even if he is really good ! anyway I love this cover ! inca roads is a very difficult song
Just love the song, and the amazing buildup-solo from Dweezil! At the start it seemed very mechanical and repetive, but afterwards he suddenly broke through with melodies and phrasings that were so unique. Brilliant guy, much like his father.
I am stunned to hear negative comments about Scheila G - out of all the ZPZ band members and Zappa music performers she would get my vote as the one most likely to have got into a real FZ band.
This is just such a monster effort, worthy of the '88 tour in quality. D and the ZPZ band are prtty much the snot, seriously this band can beat the shit outta yo mamma. Shiela is cool and takes getting used to. It's interesting to see where D puts her into the vocal line up. His playing has gotten soooo good, steeze chops. Great for all this got posted. Music is the best.
I think it's unfair to compare Dweezil's style to that of any of the other guitarists that his Dad featured in his bands, including The Old Man himself. Dweezil is Dweezil, not Steve Vai or his Dad. Love this band config, Ike rocks. Yea, it would be nice to see/hear Mike Keneally with these guys again. But, he's got his own gigs to play.
Sorry. This totally sucks. Everyone is phoning it in. Way too 'respectful.' FZ's band would be causing ceiling tiles to fall off the roof and the crowd would be lunging at the stage. Instead, here, they are all sitting politely, sipping latte. Either play it with the attitude it was played or play your own compositions, Dweezil.
@DouglasWatts Who are you to say to Zappa's son he doesn't knows his father's music and attitude ? The fact is it's XXth century and Zappa is dead.
If you want Zappa, just put your CD or vinyl in your player and don't come sayin' it sucks.
Dweezil is an stunning and accomplete musician, and ZPZ band is one of the best I ever saw. What makes these passionate people is something it touches me very deep inside.
According to my opinion, it's marvelous, and it's a wonderfully played Zappa tune.

That all the old players of frank are playing with ZPZ just shows that Dweezil is accepted by them. if he and the band are good enough for them, who am I to doubt them. I saw ZPZ live and I enjoyed it immenesly. My nephew too. it just motivated to dig more into his guitar playing. in my younger years I also saw frank, but I did not understand the music and the romanticism of the texts. like brokken hearts are for assholes, i have been in you or why does it heart when i pee etc..
if steve vai was available/affordable then why is george duke not here? i wanna hear him sing this. he was with frank for soooo many years and is from all accounts a cool guy so where's he at? btw, i saw ZPZ in ATL last year and no inca roads :(
Wow! I'm a Zappa nut. Always have been. Have FZs whole catalog in Vinyl, Cassette, and CD. Everything I have is committed to memory ok? But thats just a simple by product of years of pleasuring myself with Frank's sound performances. And I gotta tell ya, A lot of things disturbed me about Dwezil's momentum into Frank's music legacy. Yes he is superbly talented, but...he isn't Frank. And Dwezil's only lack seems to be "creativity, and imagination" as Frank wielded it. That said...This was great!
And I think people sense this. They/I love the idea of what Dwezil has done and continues to do. But there are moments he relies on Frank's legacy to carry him thru like a "magic spell" over the audience is expected, with too much presumptuous. That reliance Frank's past charm isn't needed. It smells pre farbicated, and phony to me. But, he is his son. So its sacred. To him! Not as much to us.Use your talent and take us further, stop remorphing the past. That solo makes my point, create beyond.
Dweezil starts the solo with a hugs tip of the hat to Dad, he plays some of Frank's style passages, sounds, hammer ons etc but then launches subtly into entirely his own creation, almost unique lines and phrasing and very unique sound.
I suspect what is happening is Dweezil wants to both do his own thing and tribute his Dad. To do this he needs a great band that are well rehearsed. To do that he needs to fill some houses, and to do that he needs some good program

it's a great version and solo! I got the double-DVD and can highly recommend it - specially in terms of sound-quality - but also because it is just a wondeful band that plays some of the best wonderful music that exists! :-)
Guys - seriously. I am a huge Zappa fan.But when I watch ZPZ, all I hear is a kind of 'guitar centre' version of Zappa's music. It's too clinical, too clean, sanitised. There is also a certain smugness about playing 'the music', which (ironically), given the lack of irony with which ZPZ play this, makes it a parody of itself. I get the impression that everybody says this is 'awesome' in order not to admit the awful reality that this just isn't 'it'. Opinions?

why does everyone have to compare him to frank constantly, ok acknowledge similarities...fine, but he aitn trying to BE his dad, ive heard him say in interviews he just wants young people be to be exposed to franks music, he doesnt play certain tunes that need that political delivery his dada has, he's just tryin to give the world something it needs...so weather u think he's better than frank, or franks better than him just say "fuck it, so what" its all good. i love them both. amen :)
I actually yawned. During Inca Roads! (that hurts me) If not for Napolean I'd have fallen asleep I think. Completely fucking sterile. And people saying that this is "the best guitar solo I've ever heard"????? WOW! Even putting Frank's solos aside ('cause that'd be completely unfair comparison) Keneally's solos during Inca Roads murder this! Some talented cats, for sure...but somewhere between the brain and the fingers is a heart. (spare me the A&P lectures)
@geo868 Hahaha... You being the ultimate arbiter of not only what good music is, but also what other people like? I actually yawned through the reading of your comment, but I guess it does appeal to a certain kind of person...
@johnlockejr Ohhhh....I get it! See, I said I yawned, then you said YOU yawned...hahaha! WHEW! That's some witty stuff right there! Thank you so much for responding, cupcake. I guess you're in that very narrow little demographic that my comment appealed to. ;)
To my ears, his sound is a little tinny compared to Dad's. A small critique - D has done a great service to his father's legacy. Who thought this guy who used to play guitar for Don Johnson (yes, "Miami Vice" Don Johnson) would pull together (and keep) a killer touring band. Good for him and better for us....
@sweetchildonline5:57 to 6:20 frank could do it but never would have executed that so cleanly. i think dweezil has taken a lot of his dads playing and done well with it. ithink dweezil plays things frank couldnt but the creativity is def franks forte. this is just amazing though aaaaamazing
Thank you so much for posting this video. I had stopped listening to music, but now thanks to it, I'm discovering what Dweezil makes with his father's music, I just bought the DVD, can't wait to watch and hear it.

I am stunned to hear negative comments about Scheila G - out of all the ZPZ band members and Zappa music performers she would get my vote as the one most likely to have got into a real FZ band.

I am convinced that Dweezil has the BEST guitar sounds ever.
mstudiosorg 1 year ago
This is just such a monster effort, worthy of the '88 tour in quality. D and the ZPZ band are prtty much the snot, seriously this band can beat the shit outta yo mamma. Shiela is cool and takes getting used to. It's interesting to see where D puts her into the vocal line up. His playing has gotten soooo good, steeze chops. Great for all this got posted. Music is the best.
ChynaRider 1 year ago
I think it's unfair to compare Dweezil's style to that of any of the other guitarists that his Dad featured in his bands, including The Old Man himself. Dweezil is Dweezil, not Steve Vai or his Dad. Love this band config, Ike rocks. Yea, it would be nice to see/hear Mike Keneally with these guys again. But, he's got his own gigs to play.

Annoying. Hehe seriously though, ZPZ is cool and all, but she gets on my nerves for some reason...
her name's Scheila Gonzalez, bee-tee-dubs.

@MrTheAbominations - I thought she was alright. What does "bee-tee-dubs" mean?
Alex11710 1 year ago

EddieGoregor 1 year ago
And I think people sense this. They/I love the idea of what Dwezil has done and continues to do. But there are moments he relies on Frank's legacy to carry him thru like a "magic spell" over the audience is expected, with too much presumptuous. That reliance Frank's past charm isn't needed. It smells pre farbicated, and phony to me. But, he is his son. So its sacred. To him! Not as much to us.Use your talent and take us further, stop remorphing the past. That solo makes my point, create beyond.
EddieGoregor 1 year ago
@EddieGoregor Not so sure Eddie?

@sweetchildonline 5:57 to 6:20 frank could do it but never would have executed that so cleanly. i think dweezil has taken a lot of his dads playing and done well with it. ithink dweezil plays things frank couldnt but the creativity is def franks forte. this is just amazing though aaaaamazing
