  • Ah, love his voice, childhood memories....

  • I truly wish the California, BOTH Nor-Cal & So-Cal were still what they were when Al Jolson sang this beautiful song. Well, minus the bigotry of course. But, shame to the Greedy Real Estate Men and Women and the Dope Pushing Mafia who ruined Our State in the name of a quick buck....

  • @narutofightindreamer My feelings exactly.

  • This was one of my favorite songs from cartoons from this time period.

  • Wow!! Timeless! Never regretted moving here in 1990. The weather is the best. My son was born here in Los Angeles, 2002. First generation Californian!!

  • What golden gate does have in mind? Blonde haired missus'?

  • @pootao66 The Golden Gate Mr. Jolson was referring to was The Golden Gate Bridge!

  • I'm a California chick studying abroad in London. When I fly home next month I will be singing this song! :)

  • MAN... California has the best theme songs ever.

  • I grew up watching The Jolson Story and Jolson sings again Movies, so remember so many of these Songs.

  • remembering my dad...who sang all these old jolson songs around and about all his life....recently left us aged 87....what a crooner! thanks for these old memories.

  • my granddad is 75 and has recorded a cd professionally singing Al Jolson songs which he has done beautifully, he sounds just like him and i am not the only person who thinks this! if you have a look at my page and listen im sure you will think it aswell!

keep up the good work farvie

    xxxxxx

  • Era adolescente cuando se dieron las dos películas interpretadas por Larry Parks. Debo haberla visto no menos de diez veces cada una; y con grandes dificultades, conseguí el 33 1/3 que se vendió en aquella "belle èpoque" de mi vida. Saludos.

  • I'm only 29 years old, this song RULES!

  • Amazing song & 'Jolson's' voice is outstanding, however - & Asa Yoelson wouldn't like this but...., I see Larry Parks every time I hear him sing!....

  • @alanicu2, Actaully, Franz Liszt is consider the first rock star of music. It is commonly known and is taught in basic music history classes.

  • The greatest entertainer of all time!

  • This is to Good. Hats of for Good Ol Al Jolson

  • This should be the California athem.

  • Its so sad .. Cal use to be the place to be ....the land of milk and honey and in just 40 short years the liberals destroyed it .. so sad..

  • @pclark1979 Why does there always have to be a jerk like this, posting everywhere, having to make a right wing political statement where politics doesn't even belong. and placing blame for 40 years for everything bad on liberals? Nothing is more ignorant, nor preposterous.

  • @pclark1979 Well, you're a moron who clearly didn't know much about the california of the early 20th century. The past wasn't a magically better place, if anything the quality of life in Cali is dramatically better. Go shit on someone else's videos.

  • @compactdisk2

    I second that. :D

  • This should be the state song. Sacramento choose another crappy song instead.

  • ah this song takes me back...and I'm still a teen haha

  • @PridelessChickz haha same here

  • ah what a great song

back when the music was still true and good

    not like nowadays (most of)

  • dammit Phantom Planet!

  • @RawbThatPunk Both are among the greatest songs written still.

  • Should be our state song.

  • @WorldChallenge Which state?

  • He was the first Rock star!

  • @ruthy102 Actually John Philip Sousawas the first rock star---His band made 20million bucks during his 40 year career.Hisimpact is also still felt today. Also the phrase 'concert tour' was coined as Sousa took his band across the world in 1908. Jolson was great, but the 2nd rock star.

  • He's like the first rock singer

  • This should be California's anthem!

  • @7lloyd777 It is.

  • @7lloyd777 It nearly was. In 1951 after the state legislator designated I Love You California as the state song, there was a huge push to make Jolson's song the official song, but it was to no avail. In 1988, the other song was made official by law.

  • I remember how they made us memorize this song in elementary school :) And then we had to sing it in front of the fifth graders.(Yeesh)

  • It's fascinating to hear how many ways Jolson, alone, sang this tune.

  • I hear: clarinet, trombone, trumpet, upright bass, violins

  • @agavegrove There's also a theremin doing a sub-sonic bass that only whales and elephants can hear. Jollie loved elephants, ya know...

  • Does you know what instruments were used in this song?

  • Outstanding -- sounds extra good here in the California sunshine on Christmas Eve. Many thanks.

  • Wonderful********
