@ruthy102 Actually John Philip Sousawas the first rock star---His band made 20million bucks during his 40 year career.Hisimpact is also still felt today. Also the phrase 'concert tour' was coined as Sousa took his band across the world in 1908. Jolson was great, but the 2nd rock star.

@7lloyd777 It nearly was. In 1951 after the state legislator designated I Love You California as the state song, there was a huge push to make Jolson's song the official song, but it was to no avail. In 1988, the other song was made official by law.
