  • I found a "Best of DX" floppy disk with my school's SY77. It's such a fun disk! Every patch sounds like it's right off of an 80's fire safety instructional video, but in a VERY good way.

  • Very nice improvs, my friend. I still keep my Yamaha V 50 for the FM sounds.

    AB

  • AWESOME UNDERRATED SYNTH. Ive owned one for 10 years. When you learn how to use it. It can produce incredible sounds from analogue to DX7. With great usuable sequencer and drum samples. The music just comes naturally.

  • My first digital synth workstation (bought in 1990). Served me well, but, boy, is it heavy!

  • @gareebee Yeah hahaha! my remember my son trying to pick it up, It was hilarious he couldn't pick that monster up

  • hm..... seeing that they're in the 5-700$ range on ebay I think this is my next set of keys, especially since my other 3 keys are all Yamahas, love my pss-480 ..... can do monophonic stuff with a few "secret" settings. lol

  • 55,252 views..I'm the 252 part, no doubt.

  • I search the Harpsound at 1:11

    Can You help my?

  • @bju3 I love that sound, too!! Did you find the patch online yet?

  • @RhythmDroid

    @RhythmDroid

I have found several sounds, however, I cannot say exactly whether it is this sound. I make a collection to all FM-Harp free sounds. if I am ready, I can send as e-mail.

  • This is the Swiss Army Knife of vintage synths. I sure love mine!

  • Hey if you have this synth and want some free sounds then please visit my site synthmagic.co.uk and download the free zip files with thousands of sounds.

    Enjoy!

This is a great synth and in my oppinion is one of the finest synths ever created and to think they go for a couple of hundred pounds is insane.

Anyways hope you love the free sounds on my site.Peace brothers x

  • @SPFXsynthesisers

Hello, I would be interested in the free zip files you offer ...but I couldn´t see them in your site...

    Thank you

    jm

  • do you need an amp or are the sounds prodcued from the module itself? Please look passed my ignorance i'm a retard.

  • @linorf you do need external speakers

  • All keyboards should be demo'd like this.

  • klasse Musiker!

  • I have a SY55 with all seven WAVEFORM cards and all the DATA based cards. It has the same sound engine as the SY77 and even some of the presets etc. It lacks proper FM but then again I have a PLG100-DX board in one of my MU100R modules. The SY series are fantastic synths; very editable and powerful with amazing sounds; digital and yet so warm and characterful! The only dud in the range was the SY22 and the TG33 was kinda like two of those in one with more features. The SY99 was the best...

  • A GREAT SYNTHE but please, if all is perfect, Hammond sound are really not good.

  • This is basically a DX7 with all the fm options (effects, waveforms other then sine etc.) + a rompler. This is like the best synth ever produced, and it goes for silly money these days, even cheaper then the DX7 sometimes

  • @brajtnerinjo

    would you say the DY77 sounds better than a DX7 or a DX7II ?

  • @nokia3210fuck while I have a DX7 but not a SY77 any longer, I do think the SY77 sounds better...

  • @nokia3210fuck I'd go with the FM8 package as it can do pretty much all of this and more.

  • @maccagrabme

Can the Fm8 play a combination of FM and AWM sounds?

    i hope for a feedback, greeting bju3!

  • @bju3.... no!!! bcause fm8 lacks the awm section of the sy77.

  • this is an awesome tune dude its kickass

  • i always think that greg philinganes used this synth with michael jackson albums on bad or liberian girl :) i duno why

    nice playing btw favorited :)

  • Hey well done, nice composition. I've a roland E86, SH-201, Yamaha PSR3000, PSR2700 & a Micro Korg XL. I record my own bits & bobs, Gary Numan & Kraftwerk covers. I sing & play for the elderly as a hobby. Cheers from Rich & keep up the hard work creating stunning stuff.

  • Thanks!!!Your the best!!!I I need post video in HQ!!!

  • i like the way it was demonstrated

  • speed well

  • good demonstrator

  • professionel demonstrator

  • you play very well!

  • 0:23-0:30 is that vibsyn 2?

  • GREAT!

  • 0:23 - 0:30 what's the name of the patch? also the 1:00 1:10

  • hi where can i get these sounds...i have an sy77 too

  • the fm sounds on MJ bad album = SYnclavier

  • Qué bien se escucha, sobre todo las marimbas, Felicidades bro!!!

  • you play very well! I wish I could play that good on my own SY77!

  • Hey, where'd you get the "Best of DX" floppy? I haven't been able to find it on eBay...

  • What does the Sy99 have over this?

  • @maccagrabme More waveforms, a bigger sample library, and a bigger keyboard. Other than that, they're pretty much the same thing.

  • You are a GENIUS!

  • I'm sure the marimba sounds at the beginning were used in the early windows operating systems. Lol!

  • Very nice mate!

I got myself a SY77 on my birthday a few days ago because I was in need for a FM synth. :-)

I bought a floppy disk but the drive wasn't working...

I cannot programm FM myself (yet). Is there a possibility to load those DX patches via midi/sequencer? Would you send me your DX patches that I can load it over this method? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

    cheers

    Yuzo

  • @YuzcoTibi can't you use sysex to load patches?

  • excellent, I have a SY77 for 10 years in Argentina

I can not buy Yamaha SY77 patches

There is somewhere you can download

or you could send me some to test

need patches or sounds for funk and blues

    Greetings

  • Sounds like many themes from early video games. The nice synth sounds make me want one of these.

  • In my opinion this guy is better than Keith Emerson just jacking around. The brilliance of the sound makes me shiver.

  • Nice demo.Does this synth have a sampler and how many MB is the sampler?

  • No sampler. It does use some sampled sounds (AWM) as well as the (A)FM synthesis, but no onboard sampler.

  • 2:19 pure OPL Ownage !

  • pure funk!

  • I have one, but never use it really, maybe i will try today. :)

  • a beautiful synth used beautifully

  • 2:19 - 2:27 ... opl3 LOVE!

  • no techno sounds? this synth was used by 2unlimited in the early 90's

  • chick corea

  • Amazing!

    Everi voice is singing!!

  • when u go into those chords it sounds like the neptunes sooo coool

  • You know, your Keyboard-Playing style almost reminds me of the Keyboard-Playing Style of Japanese Jazz-Fusion Pianist, Minoru Mukaiya.

  • These sounds remind me of Dos games on my 586 with my sound blaster pro- it used FM synthesis.

For some reason, nothing but this keyboard could match how rich those old sound blaster cards sounded. Maybe the newer ones don't use true FM synthesis?

  • Hi, the SY77 is actually an FM synthesizer, plus sample synthesis (but here samples can also modulate the FM operators). This keyboard is the direct discendent of the Yamaha DX7. The OPL3 FM chip found in the Sound Blaster cards is derived from this line of synthesizers, and it's also made by Yamaha. Newer sound cards generally use sample (wavetable) synthesys only, so no FM stuff on newer cards unfortunately :-(. I find those today's audio card samples so boring...

  • Also the old OPL3 could use multiple waveforms instead of just sine waves like the 1st generation DX series. Putting a stacked saw wave as your operator waveform really added bite to it! I'm in the process of sampling most of the voices in my old OPL3 with a MIDI sequencer and an emax :p. My soldering skills are too lacking to make a Midibox. :(

  • You got skills!

  • Totally awesome, this fits in the genre "TV-shop jazz".

  • haha, I was searching for a term for a long time.

    Thanks

  • Great demo-I have gone through two of these in roughly 15 years-I've played everything and this machine still amazes me. Used for most sounds covering repertoire with "Little Darlings" band years back-to cover Motown hooks, strings, organs, pianos-covered everything-from 50s up to 90s). This demo gives me more appreciation. Also use it every year for my school's holiday show (I'm a music director)-create arrangements for everything. Edited drums though-kind of lifeless-changing pitches helps.

  • man, id love to get one of these, but I already have a crap load of digitals in my setup, including the Roland D550, JD990, Yamaha TX-81Z and TG33. Im not sure how redundant it would be in my current setup.

  • get rid of the Yamaha modules you've got. This guy can cover what they do much better (in my opinion)

  • Im sure it does circles around my TG33 and TX-81Z, but I love the gritty quality of the TX to get rid of that one, id most likely dump my TG33 if I got this.

  • @grondo2001 HI there, is a broken pitch wheel easy to fix on these? By broken I mean a electrical problem.

  • @vithaj92 sorry I don't know, but I don't think it should cost much...

  • I like that sound around 2.40. Gives a nice bass sound.

  • Hey, where can I get the BEST OF DX sounds for an SY99?

  • Search for "PDD-SY77" and you'll find it available on Yamaha Europe's website. It's in SY77 format, which, as far as I know, can be converted to work on an SY99.

  • Converted yeah. Will it sound the same though?

  • I just got a TG-77 and tried to get the sounds from yamahas site, but it isnt there anymore.

I cant find it anywhere, maybe someone still have the sounds?

    cheers!

  • I love that sound at 4:15

  • I am almost buying one, it´s a fantastic synth, you can use sounds from the DX7. :D

  • Nice sounds. I've been thinking about getting a TG77.

  • niiiice keep up the good synthin'

  • What's the one at 2:20?

  • Gimme gimme that board ^_^

  • i love the end sound, at 5:00, oh, sounds great, too beautiful, is it EP?

  • That last sound sounds is the famous DX "tines" sound. I've got that sound on my Yamaha DX7S - it's called "FullTines".

  • Shh!

  • did michael jackson used this on liberian girl?

  • mouimen > Roland D-50 more likely.

  • There were many FM-ish sounds on the "Bad" album. So you recognization is absolutely right mate. :)

  • I found an old TG55. Can i use these patches with TG55? Where can i find the DISK "Best of DX"? Can someone upload it somewhere? I think it havent copyrights because its simple steps to set your yamaha sound module.

  • The SY77 is (basically) a TG55/SY55 combined with a DX7 mkII. So, sorry but you can't use these patches in a TG55.

  • I have an SY22 that i bought three weeks ago. But i really like your 77. David Paich used that for several years in the 90's...

  • David Paich is the only reason I have two motifs, a DX7 and an SY99. I used a Korg Triton for a while, but I just can't seem to get away from the FM sounds and the warm string & pad sounds that come from the SY/TG stuff.

  • At 1:11 you used the patch of Sugar Fornaciari's "Diamante" synth.

What is the name of the patch?

  • Sorry I can't check. I don't own the keyboard anymore.....

  • A terrific synth. I used to own one, now I have the TG77. I'm going to get that set of sounds you've got there for sure. Good video.

  • Ahh...DX7s...nothing like them. I have a Motif ES7, love it to death, but Id still love one of these babies :)

  • Great video.

    I also have a SY77 since 1990.

It is great. You've created other sounds, as i did.

  • FM synthesis at its best. Love the SY series.

  • i got a feeling i'm hearing pointer sister's "automatic" somewhere in that video.

  • That was very good, thankyou, I admire your ability to respond so quickly to the character of each voice and make it come alive...well done. I owned a humble SY22 and kind of hoped that somehow I'd just download the feeling and talent by touching the unit - it was not to be, I love music, just no good at creating it...

  • That was very good, thank you, I admire your ability to respond so quickly to the character of each voice

    Indeed.

It reminds me of the old days of being inspired to write a whole new song by a good synth sound.

  • Good point about the audio. Nice work. I can't stand the usual YouTube audio!

  • Just sold mine to get a fusion but you make me regret it, a limited machine but of course easy to use and those dx sounds are difficultly remakeable on the alesis and not as good sounding. I think I'm gonna re-buy it soon. Where did you get that best of dx ?

  • it came with the synth

  • hooray, SY77.

It's an oft-forgotten great of the early 90s. Which makes it nice and cheap! ;D

  • Finally someone records the audio on the PC and then paste it to the video!!! I´m tired of crapy audio. Excellent!

  • fun jam:)
