I found a "Best of DX" floppy disk with my school's SY77. It's such a fun disk! Every patch sounds like it's right off of an 80's fire safety instructional video, but in a VERY good way.
AWESOME UNDERRATED SYNTH. Ive owned one for 10 years. When you learn how to use it. It can produce incredible sounds from analogue to DX7. With great usuable sequencer and drum samples. The music just comes naturally.
hm..... seeing that they're in the 5-700$ range on ebay I think this is my next set of keys, especially since my other 3 keys are all Yamahas, love my pss-480 ..... can do monophonic stuff with a few "secret" settings. lol
I have found several sounds, however, I cannot say exactly whether it is this sound. I make a collection to all FM-Harp free sounds. if I am ready, I can send as e-mail.
Hey if you have this synth and want some free sounds then please visit my site synthmagic.co.uk and download the free zip files with thousands of sounds.
Enjoy!
This is a great synth and in my oppinion is one of the finest synths ever created and to think they go for a couple of hundred pounds is insane.
Anyways hope you love the free sounds on my site.Peace brothers x
I have a SY55 with all seven WAVEFORM cards and all the DATA based cards. It has the same sound engine as the SY77 and even some of the presets etc. It lacks proper FM but then again I have a PLG100-DX board in one of my MU100R modules. The SY series are fantastic synths; very editable and powerful with amazing sounds; digital and yet so warm and characterful! The only dud in the range was the SY22 and the TG33 was kinda like two of those in one with more features. The SY99 was the best...
This is basically a DX7 with all the fm options (effects, waveforms other then sine etc.) + a rompler. This is like the best synth ever produced, and it goes for silly money these days, even cheaper then the DX7 sometimes
Hey well done, nice composition. I've a roland E86, SH-201, Yamaha PSR3000, PSR2700 & a Micro Korg XL. I record my own bits & bobs, Gary Numan & Kraftwerk covers. I sing & play for the elderly as a hobby. Cheers from Rich & keep up the hard work creating stunning stuff.
I got myself a SY77 on my birthday a few days ago because I was in need for a FM synth. :-)
I bought a floppy disk but the drive wasn't working...
I cannot programm FM myself (yet). Is there a possibility to load those DX patches via midi/sequencer? Would you send me your DX patches that I can load it over this method? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
These sounds remind me of Dos games on my 586 with my sound blaster pro- it used FM synthesis.
For some reason, nothing but this keyboard could match how rich those old sound blaster cards sounded. Maybe the newer ones don't use true FM synthesis?
Hi, the SY77 is actually an FM synthesizer, plus sample synthesis (but here samples can also modulate the FM operators). This keyboard is the direct discendent of the Yamaha DX7. The OPL3 FM chip found in the Sound Blaster cards is derived from this line of synthesizers, and it's also made by Yamaha. Newer sound cards generally use sample (wavetable) synthesys only, so no FM stuff on newer cards unfortunately :-(. I find those today's audio card samples so boring...
Also the old OPL3 could use multiple waveforms instead of just sine waves like the 1st generation DX series. Putting a stacked saw wave as your operator waveform really added bite to it! I'm in the process of sampling most of the voices in my old OPL3 with a MIDI sequencer and an emax :p. My soldering skills are too lacking to make a Midibox. :(
Great demo-I have gone through two of these in roughly 15 years-I've played everything and this machine still amazes me. Used for most sounds covering repertoire with "Little Darlings" band years back-to cover Motown hooks, strings, organs, pianos-covered everything-from 50s up to 90s). This demo gives me more appreciation. Also use it every year for my school's holiday show (I'm a music director)-create arrangements for everything. Edited drums though-kind of lifeless-changing pitches helps.
man, id love to get one of these, but I already have a crap load of digitals in my setup, including the Roland D550, JD990, Yamaha TX-81Z and TG33. Im not sure how redundant it would be in my current setup.
Im sure it does circles around my TG33 and TX-81Z, but I love the gritty quality of the TX to get rid of that one, id most likely dump my TG33 if I got this.
Search for "PDD-SY77" and you'll find it available on Yamaha Europe's website. It's in SY77 format, which, as far as I know, can be converted to work on an SY99.
I found an old TG55. Can i use these patches with TG55? Where can i find the DISK "Best of DX"? Can someone upload it somewhere? I think it havent copyrights because its simple steps to set your yamaha sound module.
David Paich is the only reason I have two motifs, a DX7 and an SY99. I used a Korg Triton for a while, but I just can't seem to get away from the FM sounds and the warm string & pad sounds that come from the SY/TG stuff.

Just sold mine to get a fusion but you make me regret it, a limited machine but of course easy to use and those dx sounds are difficultly remakeable on the alesis and not as good sounding. I think I'm gonna re-buy it soon. Where did you get that best of dx ?
