The Disney version came in 1996 and this movie is called "The Hunchback" from 1997, according to Imdb, and I find so much similarities with this one and the Disney one. I guess this film is based allmost entirely of Disneys version but I have never read the novel. Does anyone know if this film stays true to the novel or not?
@Spyflugan91 well the shorted version is kind of simular to the movie. But the original isn't even close. The original novel is dark and evil. Disney made it happier and this movie sucks. like for example Quasi was deff because the bells where so loud. he wanted to kidnapp esmeralda with frolo(who is in love with her). Esmeralda hated Gringoire and refused to even kiss him. But i higly recomend you to read the novel (the original)
It was so hard for me to watch this part. People are so horrible. But I think this version proves a much better point than Disney's. Also this Quasimodo is much more lovable
I know that Quasi is technically in love with Es, but I think its only because she is the only person ever to stand up for him in his life. Plus, you know, there's that little fact that she is gorgeous.
I love Mandy Pantinkin in this, Salma is also wonderful. I kinda wish if people keep not being true to the book, that they would give Quasi some Esmerelda lovin of some sort eventually, I was hoping they'd do it in Disney's version but noooooooope, poor Quasi gets gipped again. T_T He's the only one in the actual story that truly loves her anyway. *le sigh* Granted in the book him and Esmeralda's skeletons are entwined together...
"I hate you....you killed my father! Prepare to die!"
I'm not big on this version-originally he DID try and carry her off on Frollo's orders, but she gave him water anyway. I like that better because it shows how kind she was, along with marrying Gringoire just to save his life.
I like this Quasimodo version: he was portrayed not only as good hearted and innocent despite his heinous appereance. And as the plot unravels it will be shown he is also a very intelligent, cultured and sensible being :-)
Quasimodo sounds a bit "overly-retarded" in this version =/
I mean, he's deaf (not completely, though), he speaks a little, but he's certainly not retarded. He's sweet and aware of what he is doing - he just has to listen to whatever Frollo tells him to do.
He said Esmeralds was not a "real" woman... if I were there, I would have struck that pampered, prejudiced, stuffed-shirted POS where he stood. Psh, REAL woman... ? LOOK at her.
I agree, but back in those days, Gypsies were considered the dirt under the noble's feet. Its terrible to imagine. Its sad how they weren't even considered human!
I was little when this came out, and my mom wouldnt let me watch it. She said it was too graffic for an 11 year old. It is sad to see how cruel they were to him :(
i love this Esmeralda and Disney. But of Quasimodo i prefer Disney, But i would like to see the movie exackly as the novel

Gypsies are not real people, you know?
I wish old movies did a better job of displaying the blatant racism of back then, most modern movies gloss over it.

@yakataah lol gypsies are real. look them up and you'll see that gypsies are also victims of racism.

I love how this scene shows how Frollo, although seen as cruel in most eyes, actually cared for Quasi, like in the book.
