It's just amazing instrumental music. The band play in a progressive metal style...doesn't mean all of their songs need to be that. If that was the case, we'd be screwed out of hollow years
@louismful it's the intro of it. Used to be the same song but they decided to split it since the intro was become longer and longer through their improvisation sessions.
Ah! This instrumental song is a stunning piece of music... the drums and guitars blend straight out to perfection... its like poetry in musical form. Its just too brilliant a composition... it almost gets me to orgasm...!
In my opinion, this is arguably (nah, definitely!) the most gorgeous piece of music ever written, simple, haunting, atmospheric, chilling, then at the end it just keeps getting more and more climatic, when you think it's reached its peak it gets even more intense! Geez, I love it all, and when I first watched Live At Budokan and head this at the end of the instrumedley it was overwhelming- I couldn't think of a better ending!
what genre would u say this is...i no it says Prog. Metal in the description but everytime i listen to it i struggle to put my finger on an exact genre and its driving me mad! i no it is at least partly prog. metal, but sounds like its mixed with something else aswell and i cant figure it out :/
@chris59937 nowdays metal have a lot of descriptions and divisions, i know is not like other progressive metal albums, is more commercial but for me is prog, with effects and other shit but is prog, just enjoy the song
@theghost95 haha enjoying the song i am my friend, i was just wonderin cos i need to know for this music thing am doing at school and like i say just cant put my finger on it :P
@theghost95 No, i think this song is just not a good example for 80-90% of dream theaters music (which is not critic, but just the truth). Even though Dream Theater got a lot of influences the "main stream" of their music is still progressive rock/progressive metal. This piece of music here might be described as an instrumental piece of rock.
@FireLinkAnime and i think you label bands with progressive post hardcore experimental neo-stoner pop when u dont know how to define a genre. DT were theg biggest impulse in the history of progressive metal. so its nothing else but pure clean progressive metal. no compromise. in the 90's there wasnt that flood of genres in metal. it was either black or white. or grey. bands nowadays always try to make a new genre mix to get a breakthrough with bein "special" and thats the problem.
@IronWorkz You know, I think your actually right, there's no problem with trying to do something new, but I think bands today are so caught into trying to do something new, that the music ends up sounding confusing, and uninteresting, and Dream Theater has played nothing but Prog Metal, but I think in their first few albums, (IAW, A, FII,) I think the music was inspired by Neo Prog.
@FireLinkAnime DT was founded in 1985 (or even before as "Majesty") where "Neo-Prog" wasn't even a term... but if you insist of having right, it maybe that most neo progressive bands see DT as a benchmark ()which the definitely are) so the Neo Prog is actually Based on early DT, not DT on Neo prog measures:D
@chris59937 not every prog metal bands sounds same... but keep in mind, DT made Progressive metal to the thing it is. so nothing can be more prog metal than this imao... its a parade example
@chris59937 that's why it's special it's not just prog metal or just rock it's an awsome mix of everything good in music, try to learn it and analyse it and see which lick, chord etc. is from which genre ...
@chris59937 It is some sort of a more mainstream version of prog metal, because on this album the record company interfered with the making of it. It was so bad that after the album was released Portnoy wanted to quit, but the other guys convinced him to stay. They got Jordan in the band, decided that from now on they'll produce their albums by themselfs, and went to record their best album ever.
@supercj8899 Well yes, as Progressive music, borrows and is influenced by many and all things. Take Dream Theater for example, they have said many times Berklee made them what they are as they were surrounded by classical music and Jazz musicians, while they were jamming rock and metal songs and it all fused together. To say prog was simply one thing would be the opposite of it's style, as it's Progressive! If it's one thing, it's that thing, not progressive or progessing
One of the things I love about DT- is their tone and transition- if I am in bad times- there is always a song to ease my mind- if I am in good times and just want to reflect there are those as well. DT keep rocking!!!
