@markj15062 Nope... the code stays set and light stays on until it is cleared or reset. Note on some vehicles a certain amount of key cycles with no failure present will eventually reset it.
I have a 05 chevy malibu my check engine light is coming on the message I am receiving is "check gas cap" The Chevy dealer wants to charge me 105.00 to put my car on a machine. I replaced the gas cap with a cap I purchased from the dealer and so far the indicator light still appears and as well as the message. The gas cap I removed was worn out indeed and yes it needed to be replace. I don't know what to do and I need my car inspected right now.Need a good cheap reliable repairman Katy Tx Help
@PhylW007 Unfortunately the light has to be reset. Even if the car is fixed by replacing the gas cap the light will stay on until the code is cleared. Some parts stores offer this service for free in some states.
no one can find ANY code(S) for 1995 ranger check light stays on, but did go off once while making a complete turn and came back on and still on after completing the flowing turn. randallalt@aol.co.
@carladjonesalt1 the check engine light itself may have a short to ground, so there isnt actually a code, but a wiring problem with the bulb or the pcm is faulty
I've taken my car to several mechanics. None of them can diagnose the issue as to why my 2000 Toyota Celica has the P0440 code.
I've given up. It's not an important code. It's honestly bullshit. Has nothing to do with engine performance or vehicle operation. It's a Government scam to get people to waste money.
does a vw new beetle reset? its a 1999 i think i just need a new gas cap

If gas cap is bad and I replace it. Will light go out by itself?

@pvtjamesryan3 you need to get a smoke test done in the evap system to get the leak solved

@iENJOIskating209
Toyota said they could do a smoke test for me for $180. I said no.
$180 just for diagnosis, not fixing anything is ridiculous.
The car drives fine. It has that annoying light, but I've come to ignore it. I asked a local mechanic about a smoke test and he said $130.
Some shops don't even offer the smoke test.
I still think the evap system is a gimmick.
It's over-priced to fix and has nothing to do with proper automotive operation

@pvtjamesryan3 I agree 100 percent
