I've always wondered if other people actually understand this movie or not. Zisou staged this. There is no jaguar shark. Ned is not his estranged son. It's all a fabrication so Steve can sell his documentaries. It's an examination of what it means to make art, and how art resembles life in ways that make it difficult to distinguish the boundaries. But most people just think it's a goofy movie and don't bother to think about why it's so weird. And I think that might be how Wes Anderson wanted it.

I disagree with everything you said in your comment especially when considering in the end (SPOILER ->) they find the jaguar shark that killed Steve's mentor. Maybe you should re-watch it and this time try to keep both feet on the merry-go-round.

@ozwald8 So, in this scene, with it's intentionally bad effects, action scene cliches, and poor production quality is just 'cause it's funny? And the end is what clinches the argument. The jaguar shark is claymation, dude. Being able to watch the merry-go-round while you're also on it is what critical examination is all about.

@LightBahamut Yes, because its funny...ALL the animals are claymation. It was an artistic choice. The neat little sea horse, the odd jelly fish, all the animals were just a little fantastic and askew. The Belefonte looks just a little weird with has features normal boats wouldn't have. The yellow submarine that fits the entire cast inside. Everything in this movie is odd and unique and kudos for Wes for even still creating a suspension of disbelief in this grand and original world he created.

@LightBahamut I also think at this part in the movie it was for humor but even more it gave the movie a nice little jolt that no one saw coming and turned a little funny, odd film into an action movie and back again. Effortless blending genres. I just think we see this movie completely differently and still both adore it for different reasons. Isn't that what all great movies do?

I think the reason some people don't find this movie funny, is because they're not paying attention. Wes Anderson his movies have a lot of jokes in it, but you just have to pay close attention to spot them. That's what I love about his movies. Sometimes his jokes aren't being presented straight forward. An example is the part where Bill Murray goes al rambo and doesn't need to reload once.
