I am happy that it has prompted the discussion - but I'm a bit surprised by this 'pointless' debate that has raged here :-0
In answer to a few issues raised:
- His toilet / shower is (as someone pointed out) the only fixed aspect of the flat's furnishings coz it is plumbed in. It is to the left of the entrance. You'll be pleased to hear that he doesn't have to defecate out of the window!
I feel that the last comment Gary said - about living in unity as being key to high-density living is also a nice point. I think that's the message of the film really.Though if course, it is also the case that gentrification and property prices are putting additional pressure on cities where poorer people often tend to get moved / priced out.
I would love to see more of this architects work. . . he really is a genuoius in multi-purpose spaces. . . in turning such a small space into an open looking area.
I think it is brilliant we have minds like Gary Chang. But I also do think that it is sad that we actually need them, given rising costs of living, shrinking living space, and over population issues the world is facing more and more :(
@josephr6 Why is it pointless? If you're going to criticise explain why. Let me give you an example, using your comment.
"Your comment is 'pointless' because it doesn't refer to the contents of the video nor explain in what way it fails to meet your needs."
I found the video fascinating as it gave me a short insight into another culture, the pressures on housing in areas of high density population and the ingenuity of one man in overcoming these.

This is stupid. Coming home after work all i want is to sit on my couch and watch TV. That is not a home its a stupid showroom for the architect to market he's works.
Come on face the fact that nobody likes to move objects especially when you are about to rest. DISAPPROVE!
@12StepJiG Well it depends on the owner, if you're an architect and a good one, you should know better, that customers have different needs just because you don't want to move around doesn't mean someone else isn't willing to. This is why people need to change their views on how to live and change for the future. With more and more people in the world and limited space we have to compromise "practicality".
@12StepJiG Yeah, that is laziness. Tired from work? Been waiting all day just to come home and take a load off? Well how about you take the 20 seconds it takes to change from a TV room to a bedroom. The time that it would take to do that would be just as quick as walking to your bedroom.
It's not a stupid showroom for the architect to market his works either, that'd be like saying that your comment is just a stupid showroom to market your laziness and inability to push moveable walls 5 feet.
I spent a short time in Hong Kong about two years ago. The local apartment I was in had a communal toilets, but private soaker tubs.
It was never a hassle and everyone made sure to keep it clean. It was never a mess and if a toilet broke or flooded, it was promptly fixed by the tenants.
But I'm quite sure he could work in a compact toilet. The only issue would be if there is no plumbing. And given the apartment building, that might be the case.
@RustyArs There IS a separate toilet (and a shower too). The video doesn't show them because they're freestanding rooms that don't transform. When you enter the apartment, to the left are the toilet/shower and to the right is a giant closet.
Why are the people of hong kong talk through my right speaker?

I like the adaptibility, efficiency and ingenuity of these designs. It's a great solution and much needed in small spaces.

"For high density living I think that the most important thing is how people live together happily and have mutual respect."

That's what I got out of this video.

You must look deeper into things. They do things like this because they over-reproduce and more importantly they're fiscally-disadvantaged.
