This is the first 80's Beany and Cecil cartoon I've seen on YouTube that actually matches the wackiness of the original Bob Clampett toons from the 60's. While this short-lived revival clearly had John K.'s wacky stretchy off-model animation style and his gross factor, the latter perfected with Ren and Stimpy, this series simply cannot hold up a candle to the original because of that influence. This goofy episode, however, comes pretty darn close.
Correct me if I'm wrong... But I'm willing to bet that 1988 was a very competitive year for Saturday mornings... While ABC did have not only Beany & Cecil but also Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo... CBS had Mighty Mouse and Hey Vern, It's Ernest! and of course, NBC had Alvin and the Chipmunks, Ed Grimley, ALF and The Smurfs... Oddly enough, Maurice LaMarche is the voice of Egon Spengler in the Ghostbusters cartoons and Dishonest John (a.k.a. D.J.) in Beany & Cecil...
From what I read in the magazine, the cartoonists complained that ABC hired a story editor that had no loyalty to the cartoonists or Bob Clampett and wrote the worst scripts in history. The result was a cold loveless Beany and Cecil series without the warm and compassion of the original series.
And Chuck Lorre--any relaiton to Ren's influence Peter?

Wow, why was this show taken off the air so fast? Were the TV networks upset that it wasn't formulaic enough?

@culpit That story editor, according to the credits, was Chuck Lorre. I guess Charlie Sheen was right about him.

"Fred Flinstone eat your heart out!"
This has some awesome animation sequences in it. I never see animation like that on TV anymore.

Cecil is right, that is the biggest fight cloud in Saturday morning cartoons!
