I wouldn't be suprised if they fought for the life vests as well.

There is wave interferance and chop. Sometimes big waves will come in at different angles causing unpredictable waveforms. They were said to have been wearing life preserver jackets.

I swam in both Lake Michigan & the St. Petersburg, FL ocean - big difference. In the ocean, the salt water makes swimming much easier, it's amazing how far and how easily you can swim compared to fresh water. Also at most times of the year the gulf waters can feel as warm as a bath tub (close to shore). However, Lake Michigan is damn cold and because it's fresh water your always working hard to stay afloat. I remember, after jumping in, this eerie feeling of immense pressure all around me.
