Give it up...it's not bluerass...but bluegrass has never had respect since Ned Betty was rapped in Deliverence. Chris is the virtuosos of are time...set back and enjoy the ride and just see where he takes music. I am thankful for the next link in the chain of musical progress!!!
I like how just cause mainstream is so pop that people regard these guys as genius. Go see a classical performance. Not to say this band is bad. They just are "the best ever" or "genius"
@CooperCarr87 If people have never been exposed to music with more compositional depth than "pop music" than indeed, from their point of view they are correct. P. Brothers are "the best ever" and "genius". Chances are they will be exposed to more music with comp depth e.g. "classical music" as a result - say maybe the Punch Brothers many performances of classical repertoire in concert or online. You seem bitter about mainstream being pop, why not be happy for the converts instead of snubbing?
@CooperCarr87 while the best ever is too subjective to really deem anyone, i would definitely say that Chris is a genius... especially in this setting... i mean go see them live... the composition is out of this world and every stop and transition is seamless... i would definitely call them genius... one of the few musicians with that level of technique, vision, lyricism, composition ever
I understand Chris wanted to try new horizons but I still think that N Creek's experience is a very sweet one Hits like The Lighthouse This Side will always remain deeply rooted in my heart
@snake27317 Dude, everything sounds good on Chris Thile's mandolin and the mandolin was played long before bluegrass was born... you know what was played on it? CLASSICAL. check out Vivaldi man
This highly inspirational! I was already planning on starting to play mandolin and now I'm definitely doing so. I would be a nice addition to my guitar. :)
Had the pleasure of seeing them in concert in Santa Monica Friday and hanging out with them a bit after. The most talented and nicest bunch 'o guys I've had the pleasure of meeting in many a year. See them if you can, and get their new album "Antifogmatic."
Words can't describe what this music. I've been listening to Chris Thile since I was a kid and his voice still leaves such an impression on me. Such an amazing band, I can't wait for the opprunitity to see them live.
Some very good comments here. If you like this style you must start digging deeper into things like Strength in Numbers, Uncommon Ritual and Appalachia Waltz. So much good music out there. Just saw teh Deadly Gentlemen last night open for David Grisman.
He does have a signed Loar, but he's playing one of his Dudenbostels here...most likely #5. He also has #14 I believe, but played #5 on his Nickel Creek and now Punch Brothers recordings.
What amazes me about them is that you could grab any recording from any of their live shows and it would sound just as good. They never mess up. They are super-band. :)
i dont know why this comment is thumbed down, holy shit is most of times used to express awe. im awestruck by these gentlemen. I've bought their cd and i absolutly LOVE it. and i usually listen to metal or electro or minimal. I said holy shit the first time i heard these fellows. thumbs up.
My sentiments exactly. Though I wouldn't say I listen to metal or electronica exclusively, I definitely never thought I would've ever like anything bluegrass. I went from NoFX to Dream Theater to The Knife, and now Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers. It's incredible listening to the best of each genre, and difficult to find other bands that match your standards after you pick your favorites, haha.
@bluegrasssingingman wow... you dont get it. if these guys were anything like Mr. Bill Monroe i would not listen to them. i hate blue grass... it is a primitive form of music. this shouldn't even be disgraced by being called "new grass". These people chose to apply their knowledge of jazz music theory to the style of bluegrass instruments. they could translate their knowledge into any style they wanted to. do not rate them on the style they chose, but that their compositional talent exceeds all.
Edition is: Roll of Honour, as far as I know, and it has got this DVD, with this piece included, just in HQ, and another DVD with music videos from various bands, including Motörhead, Deep Purple, Judas Priest and more.
That's incredible, I was going to tag certain times but the whole thing is good. Holy moly

It is or isn't bluegrass...who cares; it's music and categorization is meaningless. If you enjoy the music, that's all that matters. Great stuff.

yeah but you play it like theres only 4

ah, like a twelve string guitar (I think)
MatsuoBashoThePoet 3 years ago
exactly. quite common for mandolins actually.

There are two of each note/pitch, and four different pitches, so eight strings total. It gives it a nice ringing tone. I can't really describe it.
