Watching the video and reading your post-trip comments helps a lot. The most ridiculous thing I want to bring is a DSLR camera. I'm very much into photography and the trip offers countless photography opportunities. I would probably regret bringing it though eh?
@bradkrit . I just got rid of my Nikon D300 and bought a Samsung NX10. With the 30mm pancake lens attached it's very easy to carry. Pictures are great too. I also looked at the Sony NEX series, but there I times I want a viewfinder. Olympus PEN series are good too.
Ok, this video was done before I completed the AT, and I got rid of a lot of stuff along the way. I watched my video again, and I just had to laugh! Here is all the stuff I got rid of: wallet (use a plastic bag), nalgene (use a powerade bottle, it's lighter), I took just one pot, no cup, the cloth shammy, sent my tent home (used shelters), first aid kit (duct tape and vitamin I), harmonica, salene, hand sanitizer, sun block, water pump (use bleach), hammock, knives, and sunglasses. Good luck!
I used a product called Heet, which has alcohol in it and burns clean. Most gas stations and automotive stores have it. I used it the entire way, and it worked awesome!
30 lbs plus 10 lbs of food plus a pound of alcohol for the stove. Did you know it is near impossible to buy alcohol for your stove along the trail? Thru hikers use gas.
The stove made it the entire way. Very efficient! This video is funny because I ended up sending half of my gear home. I ended up finishing the trail with a 17 pound pack!
@jlwest131: I will be doing my first thru-hike this summer. I will SOBO the AT starting in late June/Early July. I know I'm asking a lot, but can you maybe specify the gear that you discarded/didn't need that's in this video? Also, what did you not pack that you ended up needing afterwards?
Just wondering if you made it all the way south? I planned for about a year back in early 2001-2002...and never got to it. Now it's just on my list of things to do. I've planned on the entire trail from Maine to Georgia...when the time presents itself.
Yes I did make it all the way going south. I left on July 4th and got down to Georgia December 12th. You should most definitely make time to do the entire trail. It has been one of the best things I have ever done.
@boutelsworth Maybe he wants to go 'free style"? And also they weigh too much :) Also serious.. He didnt pack a jacket or a downjacket.. nights can get really chilly and a down can be packed into nothing and weighs nothing.
i know its been a while but if you still have all this gear you should do a review of how it all worked or, if you traded something out, why it didnt work out. that would be really helpful!
Why would you take ibuprofen daily? long term use (such as over a 6 month period to hike the AT) can cause GI bleeds and kidney damage. Did you mean Aspirin?
@slawpumpkin well 5 pounds ain't terrible for a 2p tent, especially since he probably needs one that will last him the entire AT and be good in three seasons. The 1st aid kit is a little much though haha
Make your buddy carry the poles and tent stakes or vice versa. You won't use the harmonica. Put the pills in zip lock bags. Don't take the hammock, just sit on your pad. try to max out your summer back at 25 pounds with food and water, and your winter bag at 30. remember you won't be able to sleep in a 20 degree bag when it's 60 degrees outside, make sure you have two.
If you have any other questions let me know, I completed it in 07.
You only need one pot. Also your tent is WAAAY too heavy. Check out Six Moons Design, or my personal favorite Henry Sires' Tarp Tents. You guys could use a Double Rainbow and save yourselves 2.5 pounds
This is when you know someone is truly dumb, he said"REI sub zero 20 deg." sleeping bag, is you knew anything about the outdoors you would know rei is a gear store who has their own line of gear.
@Nerotique doing what wrong? hiking or living? haha just playing. personally, i enjoy bringing a throwing knife or two for those days i don't feel like hiking... just a guy in the woods with a shiney blade and a tree stump
@Nerotique agreed I've been carrying my standard Boy Scout knife with nothing more than a blade can opener and an awe for God know how long. It's without a doubt bulletproof. And only 3 1/2 inches long.
Dont bring pill bottles. there are lighter means of toting pills. I agree with salts ditch the cup. split the tent up between the two of you. FYI High deet concentration eats many synthetic materials. Perhaps a compression sack for your clothes it would give you a bit more room. I wish you all the luck in the world. You are in for a life altering experience.
did you finish the AT Im just doing half and then im gonna do the whole thing the next year

So you did the whole trail? Too cool. Say, where do I find others who want to hike in a group? I can't find anyone to go with me. Wimps! :)
