  • SPECTACULAR!

  • L'ACUTO FINALE E' PROPRIO DIFFICILE...

  • What I have always found unbelievable about her is how she could produce that huge sound while hardly supporting it physically at all. It does show no question but still I find it quite mind blowing. So many technical flaws but she has sung with them for decades and still manages to sing these roles somehow.

  • una maravilla hasta con variaciones

  • una maravilla

  • I find her behind the orchestra a lot. Is it the problem of her or the conductor? She seems starting to sing each note on the beat instead of slightly before in order to produce the sound on the beat. Or is she simply producing the consonants on the beat?

  • BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA BRAVA!!!!!! BRAVISSIMAAAAARIIIIIAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This performance brought me to tears it SO exciting!! I want the DVD this is from! He'll, I'd even take a VHS tape!!!

  • A very exciting performance. I saw the NYC opera do ATTILA in the 70s.

Have never seen a live Nabucco though.

You can find CDs of Guleghina on The Opera Lovers site. Has a Pique

Dame which I don't think she has recorded commercially.

Souliotis and Linda Roark Strummer also have great CDs of Nabucco.

    Tnx 4 the stirring post.

  • This is very rough singing.. she ignores the written trills before the High C's.. and in general the coloratura is not crisp enough.. The High C's are flat a bit and effortful.. The whole thing does not sound like a true dramatic coloratura.. They do not have this much problem with this music.

  • Certified Intergalactic! I have yet to hear a better rendition of this aria.

  • I don't think she wants to be Dimitrova or anyone else...I find her interpretation quietly personal; her acting is really good, her ornaments are fine for a dramatic soprano; this role has been composed for the rare dramatic d'agilita soprano voice..buy anyway, Guleghina does a very good job in the "killer role"..

  • I think I just heard mountains crash to the ground.. this is totally the delivery I envision of this aria!

  • A nice performance but she tries to place ornaments on her singing during the second half. This Aria should be good without ornamentation in my opinion.

  • @MrOpera67

In Italian Opera it should be okay for the singer to ornament the da capo. I guess the thinking is that people don't want to hear the exact same thing twice.

  • @ilfig1iomio I guess, I just haven't really heard any other singer ornament throughout the whole second half.

  • @MrOpera67

This is a difficult role, and this cabaletta in particular is very florid, requiring many ascending trills. It's hard enough to sing what Verdi wrote, so most singers don't ornament the da capo, but it's not forbidden.

  • @ilfig1iomio It was just a mere statement.

  • Guleghina is STACKED!

  • if her high Cs weren't flat, it would have been a fair performance, but that kinda ruined it for me

  • Maravilhosa!!!

  • Il coro è mostruoso

  • Yes... Dimitrova was better than Guleghina, but she was not ALWAYS in tune as you said. Check her singing this cabaletta in Orange '89 and you'll see that she misses some high notes and the final high C was transposed down.

But she was still better than Maria, whose effort to sing this just proves that she can't.

  • @washguitar: it's true, but in Orange 1989, Dimitrova missed something in this cabaletta but were almost perfect in the rest of opera, like in Rome 1997 (I watched her live) where she still reached a good high C after missing the final G of cavatina; otherwise, Guleghina rarely was in tune, as here as in many other performances... (sorry for my bad english)

  • @1970heinz I completely agree with you. No one is perfect, but in my opinion Dimitrova is closer than Dimitrova.

  • i saw her turandot a few weeks ago at the met. she was hella pitchy

Forse il do diesis finale?

  • @bellinianodoc comunque è un Do naturale :)

  • Guleghina has had a great career. It's personal taste...... much of the time.

  • Such a wannabe.

  • WTF !! Is this a free variations on Salgo Gia theme?!

Disgusting !! And on top of that - OFF KEY !!!!!

Girl, do NOT try to sing this again

    EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This stinks. Listen to the ascending chromatics, she doesn't even bother to differentiate one note from another. And she's hooting like a barn owl. Boooooooooooooooo!

  • Certificate Intergalactic! Guleghina molto eccitante!

  • Comment removed

  • I hate the fact that so much people compare dimitrova with guleghina!!! It's incredible! How can you do that?

  • GUleghina's voice has just the power of Dimitrova's voice. Just it.

  • Not even that!

  • dimitrova and guleghina are the best in this role. hands down.

  • questo è cantare!

  • Excellent performance!

  • If she keeps such healthy sound after so many years in the most dramatic repertory, she must be the greatest technician singing today!

  • She sings like a godess...

No wonder she is a Slavic woman, half Russian half Ukrainian.

And Dimitrova was Slav too, from Bulgaria...

  • She's half Ukranian and half Armenian. Her husband is Russian.

  • @zdenko1945 Guleghina is half Armenian half Ukranian. Only married to a Russian

  • If you think Guleghina did no justice to Abigaille your're all nuts. I saw her perform it at the Met with Ramey and Gavanelli in 2004 and it was thrilling.

She has had a wonderful career.

  • Sgradevole e trascinante allo stesso tempo...

  • that was half a tone higher, darling...

  • flat flat flat flat flat....

Povero Verdi!

  • very nice set-...& staging.

  • where are all the notes and trills written?...

    Only screams!

  • Indeed! I have never seen them in the score...

  • well, they ARE in the score, but not in this performance!

  • Talking about the notes she's singing... hehehe... I know what the score says.

  • Guleghina looks and sounds so much la Dimitrova. I love them both. Great performance.

  • Maybe there's a slight likeness of apperance, but that's where the likeness ends. There is no Abigaille like Dimitrova. Guleghina doesn't have the stamina or technical control to do it anywhere nearly as good. The reason she's done such a career on this is that we hardly ever hear sopranos with the right voice and technique for this rep. Maybe she does have the right voice, fantastic material, but not the technique, which is appaerant in more recent live performances of this...

  • She TRIES to sound like DIMITROVA...Dimitrova's voice was POLISHED, full of dynamics and steady HIGH notes ALWAYS..huge ones always in tune and what's more COLORATURA....Check her cabaletta of Lady Macbeth in 'or tutti sorgette'.

Guleghina is just a shadow of what Dimitrova was...

  • Hails to that! Halleluja!!! There's nothing wrong with my ears afterall!. ;)

  • très bonne interpretation de Maria Guleghina

    j'aime beaucoup cette artiste bravo

  • It's very exciting if a singer risks everything at one evening! Abigaille, Medea, Norma, Lady Macbeth and Turandot are such roles, which require so much from a singer - and it's a real triumph when she succeeds!! Brava!

  • Nice! D.

  • It's nice that she executes a few changes in the reprise of "Salgo già," but one misses all the trills.
