  • These guys are sick! end. Some hip changes. flip

  • great musicians. i just bought a mandolin & this is really inspiring. thanks

  • Amen...doesn't concern itself with whether or not it fits an exact description of bluegrass music...

I am so sick of music purists. Music is music...if you cannot appreciate music for what it is, you have no business discussing it.

  • Amazing!

  • Nickel Creek are good pickers, but there is no Bluegrass in this song. In the rest of their music, you can't say there is any there either. Nickel Creek is New Grass. Which is POP Country to Real Country Music. I'm not saying their the same Talent

as POP Country. They have Talent, that POP Country will never see in their music. POP Country is as bad as Disco.

  • @bluegrasssingingman you are very wrong. If you listen to sean, his entire rhythm is backbeat bluegrass. The chord progressions arent bluegrass, the arrangements are and the orechestration is. I wouldn't give them crap for stepping outside the 5 chord genre that they so easily step outside of. It is a good thing.

  • @lazysmurf420 How is it giving them crap for stating the fact, that they are not Bluegrass? They was listed as Bluegrass.

  • Is that a young Michael Cleveland on violin at 0:47?

  • @TheBigNeff84 it is Mike, he was around 12 there, search for 1993 Bluegrass Youth All-Stars to see the full video, also check out Michael Cleveland Part 1 to see some Vintage Mike. I play mandolin (not so well) in that video

  • Christ Thile speaks the language fluently

  • I could never pick like that if i lived a million years, EXCELLENT! top of the line Bluegrass *****

  • EXCELLENT!

  • Nickel Creek was a gift to the musical world. We NEED them back!!!

  • @SyreenInSapphire listen to the punch brothers... its truly where thile needed to go.

  • Why don't all players at this age have paparazi following them around? Instead of Taylor Swift. Devoid of any talent

  • @SuperGuitarman69 The record companies don't want you to get attached to a great artist/band. They need you to buy what they are putting out this week, and the next, and the next. The turn over in music today is ridiculous. Remember when you followed a band for years?.

  • @jbdbsb I live in Nashville. I am a session pro. I've had a record deal. My friend lol, you are preaching to the choir!

  • @SuperGuitarman69 - Be careful what you wish for. Taylor Swift has a prodigious talent, but like Madonna's it's in marketing, not in music, in convincing every 13-year-old that they could sound just like that if they ever put their cellphone down.

Tim O'Brien is a great role model, proving that there's a pocket of sanity available if you set up shop at the edge just behind the cutting edge; you can have a life and create there without fear of becoming Shania Twain.

  • @SuperGuitarman69 They don't have the paparazi following them because they are not your "POP COUNTRY" of todays so called (country) music. I have been a Mark Chesnutt fan for a long time, He has (2) brand new cds out and todays "POP COUNTRY RADIO" won't play them! Thats why I have xm radio. People need to see where all your traditional country artists are playing at today! It is not Nashville! They are all in Branson now. They took the word COUNTRY out of country music!

  • @rockytopfarm I totally agree. I am a pro in the business. I know Mark pretty well. There are a few in the business that still love traditional that are new. I went out with Easton Corbin this weekend to sub for his guitar player. He is traditional and people do like him. So it is good for the industry

  • Perfect!!!!

  • Why is it that I know so many untalented slobs and wastes of genetic material, but talented interesting people are in such short supply. FTW

  • sean watkins... sighhhh

  • Simply AMAZING!!!

  • Who are the 12 idiots that dissed this video?

  • these yong kids and their crazy music. I LOVE it !!

  • All the gimmicky crap in the world is of no consequence when talent like these kids have is involved. What amazing gifts they have.

  • Pretty hot violinist.

  • oh tits . . . .

  • wow i just saw the buckethead of the mandolin amazing work you should of stuck with this

  • are you insulting him?? buckethead is a terrible guitarist. chris thile is amazing at mandolin though.

  • @blahman178 i will agree. thile is in my opinion the most amazing mandolin player walking the face of the earth. incredibly talented. i dont know how you can say buckethead is a terrible guitarist though. you may have heard one of his more bizarre pieces but he is also an amazing musician.

  • why the heck is the mandolin such a cool instrument, dont know, it just is

  • does anyone know where i can download the song "Old Cold Coffee on the Dashboard" to my ipod? please help! thanks

  • what's the name of the amazing tune of mandolin and violin you can hear at 1.57?

  • exactly what Chris said it is at 1:40

  • Old Cold Coffee On The Dashboard

  • Old Cold Coffee On The Dashboard ftw!

  • OH NOOOO!!!! Jazz played with BLUEGRASS Instruments...This will NEVER do....RUUUUNNNNNN everyone, they are trying to do something ORIGINAL! They will ruin Bluegrass for all who listen. If this doesn't bring on the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse I don't know what will.

  • bela fleck did it foyst!

  • I need mandolin tab of old cold coffee....really bad.

  • Great. An incredible performance.

  • Hello! were in our teenss

and we sing and play bluegrass!!

We have some pretty neat stuff!! We sing, sing harmony and play mandolin and guitar!! check out are page!!

    <3

  • That may be, and you may play beautifully... but please tie it in to the amazing video we just watched! It feels like you're just using nickel creek to advertise yourselves.

  • A girl with violin is sooo nice :)

  • ya sara watkins is awesome, you should hear long hot summer day, its one of her solo song, its AMAZING!!

  • its a cover btw, had to throw that in their before someone chopped off my head

  • Nickel Creek are awesome musicians, particularly Chris Thile, but without a rolling banjo, they cannot be regarded as a bluegrass band - sorry, that's just the way it is.

  • And thank the lord for that.

  • 4:50 < Chris plays the "pink panther" theme song... :-)

  • "A Few of my Favorite Things" after that too!

  • who is the banjo player in that youth allstar group?

  • I believe it's Cody Kilby, the guitar player for Kentucky Thunder. Later in that video he switches to guitar.

  • Between Chris Thile and John Mayer, idk who makes weirder faces :) maybe you have to make them to be awesome?

  • I got to hear them for the first time at a festival just north of Azusa, CA when Chris was only 12. You knew instantly you were witnessing something very special.

  • beautiful sounding

the mandolin's tone is the definiton of dulcid

  • *dulcet

  • apologies

  • beautiful... synchronised

  • check out the dudes face at 2:20 when he shreds it up!!!

  • he's in the zone

  • hahaha

  • Few musicians have the mastery of their instruments the way these guys do. Stunning.

  • my goal is still to stay up till midnight

  • I got to see them many times including once from the front row at the Freight in Berkeley. I brought a live disc of Uncommon Ritual at Avery Fisher Hall and gave it to Chris. Years later and he records and tours with Edgar Meyer now. Coincidence? You be the judge:)

  • it's called a mandolin, mcgyver

  • hahaha

  • the guitar look so small that ... look so alike like guitar-hero's guitar...LOL

  • absolutely incredible

  • wow, that's amazing

  • Great stuff, but I like their traditional stuff the most.

  • This IS their traditional stuff......I mean unless you want to go back to their "Little Cowpoke" cd?

  • Great band! So musically inspiring...

I made a video called "One World..."

Check it out and tell me what you think.

Just trying to make a difference...

  • great great great BAND

  • Listen to Thile at around 4:50 on video. He quotes "The Pink Panther Theme" and "My Favorite Things". Amazing player, in fact there all monster players.

  • @macvoutie absolutely brilliant. I had a discussion with the owner of a local jazz bar who said, "Jazz and Bluegrass are practically the same genre." and while that's a bit of a stretch, the influence is clear in what Monroe had in mind. Chop chords on 2 and 4 takes the place of a hi-hat. the improvisation requires the same degree of musicianship, but without the extended harmony. now, chord extensions begin to make their way into newgrass. Anyway, they're phenomenal musicians.

  • one of the mosy entertaining and enlightening bands of all times. i took my father and my son to one of their shows in Cincy several years ago and they had something special that could touch hearts with their music

  • I am anxiously waiting to hear Sarah's next project. You go girl!

  • I wouldn't say I'm glad that they broke up but it is nice to see them go their own way. Thile's solo stuff, and especially his duets with Mike Marshall have been worth it.

  • haha wow i was there at grey fox, i remember that performance

yeah iits soo bad that they broke up

  • Anyone else think it totally sucks that they 'broke up?'

  • some of their music did

  • they really bring it

  • Nickel Creek is American music and folk at its best....Thanks for playing!! Caveman

  • aww dang. i was just going to say something about that headstock thing. you guys got to it before me lol.

  • WOW Is right , awesome players and tune why are these guys n girl not more well known around the world.

  • There are a lot of artists who can perform complex rhythm and tonality. There are precious few who can make it "listen-able". Nickel Creek nailed nailed it.

    WOW

Pure listening pleasure. Can't wait to see what these guys come up with in the future.

And thanks, bluegrassjourney, for posting this. I loved getting to finally see some footage from their early years.

  • semplicemente straordinario

  • dude they broke up which totally sucks bc i love them

  • superb!

  • wonderful precision and skill, real art

  • Posted a five vote from me!

  • man, can you take it easy on the cursing? on the other hand this is a great piece. thanks.

  • LOL

  • GOD DAMN ......he is like the buckethead of the mandolin thats the most talent i've seen on youtube

  • That's the most talent I've ever SEEN.

  • Bravo folks! Keep up the great music.

    Fm your friends at MTVstudio1

  • their crazy ah that was awsome

  • Nah Pirate. Its the same. The angle you see the headstock at you can't see the curl but I see what you mean. It can be confusing.

  • Is it just me or is chris playing a different mandolin at around 5:41.........it apears to be a different headstock than his dudenbostel.....a mandola maybe, that they spliced in without the sound.....can anyone read the headstock....

  • They never cease to amaze me every time i see them! I just wish they hadnt breaken up! BRING BACK NICKEL CREEK!

  • you can tell that they play for the love of music, which is so rare now I think. Good for them.

  • Beautiful.

So wish I had been there...

  • Great tunes.

  • it doesn't matter if they're "not true blue grass" because they aren't trying to be blugrass. They have opened themselves up to a much wider audiance and you can't really say that they were better when they started out. You may have liked their music better back then but that doesn't mean they were better at what they do.

  • maybe to you, but who cares?

  • Can you say talentd . Meow

  • them kids are sick

  • Love it - so good

  • sick progression.

  • They are absolute olympians.

  • wow

  • DAMN!!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!

  • I wish I can play amazingly like that!

  • The harmonic progression is so sick and the time changes are so fast and always together. Simply. Amazing.

  • This arrangement could be described like a fine vintage Cabernet or Merlot: Celtic Folk overtones accented by subtle flavors of Latin spice and post modern rhythm with a strong but pleasant finish ...

  • Part of history now. Grey Fox has to move. I will miss the hill. Part of the charm was going up there into the clouds and being on another planet for a few days. Comming down was comming down.

  • the kids were playin wheel hoss by bill monroe

  • I heard Pink Panther and then something from 'The Sound of Music' right in there when Thile was freestyling. Amazing.

  • Don't know if anyone else spotted it before but there's definately some Inspector Gadget in there. Can I reccommend Hellecasters' version of Inspector Gadget to anyone with an ear for amazing guitar! It's 80s-tastic but good music's timeless right? :)

  • amazing,,love it..they are in away genius ..

  • such virtuosity (is that a word) and so easy .... nice flow ... hides the sophisticated and complex music beneath.

    what a treat!

  • I'm mexican, but I love Bluegrass! Cool!

  • Bluegrass is world wide! You can find a jam on every contenent. Ranchera is very close to bluegrass- you just have to get over the Latino Cultural thing to enjoy it!

  • I saw them this summer with Fiona Apple in Columbus and it was amazing how they played their music. I totally loved the show and have driven my wife nuts listening to their music.

  • hahah chris looks so funny now

  • thats michael cleveland on fid

  • I like it - great sound

  • Nickel Creek are great muscicians. Never had bluegrass in my collection, but after getting into NK, I went out and bought some really old timey bluegrass

  • These guys are a group of incredibly talented individuals. I agree that all bands evolve over time and many may appreciate the direction the band is going. I don't think they have to stick to just traditional bluegrass, but from what ive heard lately, they're flirting with pop music. There is no doubt that these musicians are fantastic, and as long as they stay true to themselves and keep playing talented, they'll have a fan out of me!

  • is this IRISH usa

  • so i just found out that chris thile's dad repairs musical instruments at my college in Murray, KY.. crazy stuff

  • Nickel Creek!! My fave band since The Beatles. I've got tickets to see them 11/18/07. My 6th and maybe last time seeing them perform live - for a while.

I already miss having a new recording from them. Maybe they'll record and just not tour. I hope so anyway.

  • so how was the show? I'm so jealous. I was in shreveport LA a few years back when they played there... didn't even know that they played the night I was there, or I would have been there!

  • It was excellent. And lots of fun. HOB on Sunset was packed and the audience was right there with them the whole way. I'd read how fabulous their concerts are and I've never seen one that wasn't great.

This was their last show on the 'Farewell for Now Tour'. (The 2 upcoming shows in Nashville aren't part of the tour.) They asked us to sing the final encore with them - When You Come Back Down. It was heartbreaking and Sara cried a bit.

  • i wish they would stay true to real bluegrass, the way they did when they were real young. don't like what they do today. not real bluegrss like they were

  • i guess we have our own oppinions because i like what they do now a lot better. i still like real bluegrass though too.

  • as much as I'd like to disagree with you, I can't. I like the traditional stuff they did too. Though the new album had some great great songs, coulda done without the fake drums and overdubs on the new album

  • Music is an evolution of the mind soul and body, their music has evolved at an incredible pace. Although I truely love traditional bluegrass you have to admire the amazing direction in which this band has gone. Taking tradition to a higher level. I only hope they can keep it up and keep amazing us with their incredible talent.

  • While it is good to understand the roots of your style, all genres should progress, and explore fusions with other styles. The reaction by bluegrass traditionalists to Nickel Creek, Railroad Earth, The David Grisman Quintet and other newgrass groups is rather reminiscent of the disdain jazz purists had for the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Miles Davis's electric work. Great music is great music, regardless of genre.

  • Haha, they're so adorable here. When was this, 5, 6 years ago?

  • Bluegrass is vastly underrated... unfortunately. Some amazing talent comes from this genre that is so often overlooked.

  • cool video. look at 5:41, chris has a differant mandolin. thats kinda weird

  • Its not different. I have that mandolin. It was just at a weird angle.

  • .......no its not. the one at 5:41 is more of an A style head. They look NOTHING alike.

  • It really is the same one. It says "The Epiphone" on the top. No other mandolin but that one says that. Its just at a weird angle. look a little closer.

  • That's the headstock of his Flatiron bouzouki.

    It says "The Flatiron"

  • that would be Sarah Watkins...and yes she is fine!!!!!!!! and quite a musician to boot....

  • Michael Cleveland, who's a pretty big star too.

  • really great!!!! its amazing....

  • love it! :)

  • chris is amazing, that video of him when he was 7 or 8, holy shit..

  • wow... nothing more to say.. incredible!

  • I'm in love! Chris Thile is a hero of mine and I love when he covers great music with his amazing bluegrass sound!

    Always awesome guys!

  • Im glad that great music is still alive

  • i second that amigo .

  • that is fucking awesome!

  • CHRIS THILIE ROCKS!!!!

  • Hell yes he does!!!

  • my name is chris, i was wondering if you could take the time to check out my band videos and tell me what you think, through comments, messages, or ratings.

    thanks.

  • he didnt get his first dudenbostel till he borrowed it from that lawyer then he had to give that one back "the one with the chip in the head" and he got his own now i have a dudenbostel because of him

  • does any one know were i can find the tab on old cold coffee on the dashboard?

  • And I dont think that is a Dudenbostel mandolin becuase if you look at it paused at 05:42 it says The at the top....so I dont know.

  • My friend that is a Dudenbostal through out if you will notice the clip at 05:42 is out of sync and the head stock of that particular instrument appears to be more along the lines of an "A" style instrument. Check the headstocks! Did you kno that theres a seven year waiting list to get a Dudenbostal?... I think they cost aboust as much as a Mercedes!

  • A friend of mine, Jackie Miller played that Dude on a Ronnie Reno CD and Chris borrowed that instrument. Seriously though, there are many builders out there as good as Lynn Dudenbostel ... the only difference is a budding mandolin superstar did NOT pick up a Summit, Kimble, Daley, Old Wave etc. The Stratocaster was a poor seller for Fender until Hendrix played one on stage, same with the Gibson Les Paul and Duane Allman.

  • That is the headstock of his Flatiron bouzouki spliced in the video for god-knows-what reason. It says "The Flatiron"

The mando he plays on that tune is definitely a Dudenbostel.

  • Honestly I think it is best that Nickel Creek break up which they are going to do this year....becuase Chris deserves to be playing blyegrass...like he once was.
