Why David Byrne's solo career wasn't as big as Talking Heads is one of musics big mysteries! Doesn't matter though, he's like a lovely surprise for people to stumble onto. Great musician and lyricist and i love his voice. Fabaroonie!x
went to Portland Oregon Zoo performance 2005? maybe, unbelievable; I have never seen more weed in my life, I was in nursing school at the time and don't smoke for a long time but I am telling you this beat out Rothbury, Ann Arbor hash bash and GD shows for weed-per-capita, David Byrne blew it up proper too and left now head disappointed on that day, BTW Portland seems to produce better than average shows much like Detroit
Hangover today, but this has put a smile on my face. Can`t get that dreadful vid of Whitney out of my head - where she shakes her head from side to side, very cheekily.
This is hillarious, I prefer Dave's version to Whitney's though I've always like Whitney's hit but this is just another song showing the whole genius of Dave
come on guys this is the lead singer form the Talking Heads he's got a great voice...he was just putting his spin on this wonderful Whitney Houston song...
In fact - screw it, although I have loved David Byrne's stuff (both solo and with Talking Heads) since I was 13 or so, and admire him vastly more than I admire Whitney Houston, I prefer her version.
It's interesting reading different perspectives... here's mine... I don't think there's any intended irony or humor here. I think he just genuinely enjoys the song and wanted to do it his way. I think some people need to stop over-thinking things and just feel the groove.
I agree, I think he just likes the song, and I think David Byrne's great, so for that reason alone I'm almost convinced by this version...but not quite. I don't think the song stands up to being sung this sincerely. Byrne sings it like he wants to dance with somebody, whereas Whitney Houston sang it like she wanted to end up having passionate condomless sex with whoever she got to dance with. This is earnest and cheerful. The Whitney Houston version is like shotgunning Pepsi Max.
I agree - I think that this song sucks, and I can't stand Whitney Houston, but on the other hand she sings it like she means it, and so does David Byrne. And I don't think that there's any irony going on, or not much, anyway.
On the other hand, whoever arranged his string section's charts was not having a good day - that's the most pedestrian arranging I've heard in a long time. And why is he playing a Tele Thinline! A crappy variant on a perfectly good guitar.
The Union Chapel concert is out on DVD - a must see if you're a DB fan.I was there and it was one of his best ever performances. The acoustics were much better than on this clip.
I saw him perform it at 930 Club in DC. At the end when everyone was cheering like crazy he said "Wow, I didn't realize there were so many Whintey Houston fans here."
He can make an awful song very cool.I often chant this tune the way he sings it to my kids as I waltz across the floor dancing with myself. They think I'm nuts. He made it fun for me.
YEAH! Thanks for the post - I remember when he did that one in Denmark some (yikes almost) 10 years ago? At first I couldn't pin down where I heard it before, but I knew it alright ;-)
Interesting take on the song, though I wonder if it would have been better to make space for a new rendition of a Talking Heads song. When he did this song Austin City Limits he introduced it - jokingly - as "a song my Mom used to sing me when I was small"
Yes, he took the bubblegum pop-iness out of it. Come on, open your mind a bit and enjoy the tone and style. How many other songs combine cello and bongos? It's these kinds of arrangements of "instriments" - ahem - that make Byrne so well-regarded.
I like David Byrne's quirky humor. This won't knock Whitney off her pedestal, but it is interesting.

As Zappa once asked...Does Humor Belong in Music?
Of course!!! What a terrible song...;) But somehow it works well when David sings it...

Can New York's Dean of Songs find a gem of a lyric in the popular miasma?
YES!
"I want to dance with somebody... I want to dance with somebody who loves me!"
If those words aren't true for you, you're not alive any more! :)
David Byrne has a special eye, a unique oulook, and I love when I'm able to see it!
