  • quick question. i bought a 93 caprice today. 350 ci engine in it. but the guy didnt know if it was a LT1 or a L05. how do i find out for sure? is the only way to find out, just running the ID tag for the car?

  • If the 8th letter in ur VIN is a P then it is an LT1. P was the code used for LT1.

  • Thanks, Ya it turned out to be just the L05. And i sold the car. But im looking at buying another caprice. 96 with the 4.3 L99.

  • do not buy a 96 L99 buy a 96 LT1 much better motor.

  • they didnt put the LT1 into any b body until 94. so you have an L05.

  • mine doesn't backfire like that when revved.. to be honest, it sounds like a possibly failing optispark.

  • i ride through town 25-30mph in 2nd gear.. gives it a nice rumble, and pass cop cars all the time...i also have resignating tips at a 45 degree angle

  • I have a 95 4.3L.......you don't see them very often. How much horsepower in your's ?

  • not sure its stock besides the dual flowmasters.

  • a 4.3 has 200 horse power stock with just the flowmasters u wont really see any significant horsepower gains unless u delete the cats and add some headers dependin on your headers u lookin at about 19 to 20 more horses still pretty slow get your self a 5.7 lt1 its not worth gettin them slow ass 4.3 l99

  • The thing I like about the L99 though are that the connecting rods are longer which supposedly lets it rev higher than the LT1, dont know for a fact though.If I could get the L99 heads to flow as good at LT1's I'd keep the L99.I dont mind the smaller bore.But I would only lose 1 mpg with an LT1 so youre right its just better to upgrade to an LT1.

  • well the good about a 4.3 is u can do alot mods than u can a 5.7 now i use to have a 94 4.3 but a lil work and u can beat a 5.7 off the line and get some accell but racing long distances will be your only disadvantage i know alot of people will disagree with that statement but its true 4.3 top out at like 117 but with some work u can hit your shifts quicker than a 5.7 like u said about the reving which is actually true so u can gain in your 4.3 if u change your throttle body 52mm throttle

  • Its dual 40 series flow masters on a stock 4.3L V8 L99. I used to have a 93 caprice with the 305 engine and it sounded the same with dual flows.

  • Clarifying: Is that a single Flowmasters Standard 40 Series - two chamber muffler?

    - I have a 91 Caprice (stock 305 V8). Dya think it would sound ok if I only replaced the muffler?

  • Ive removed the home plate and replaced it with a hockey puck but I havnt taken off first base yet.

  • I've watched this a few times and the engine sounds great, but you still cant spin the tires can you? I'm looking for ways that I can increase power to be able to spin the tires on my 4.3. But I think the only way to do that is to put in an LT1

  • Na not really, sounds good but still slow.

  • add the gears 3;73 u be able too it give u posi with not enough hp u it might not work up the gear ratio to like 4;11 that thing will definatley do it lol i have gears on my impala but spinning tires is not good for the track so mines are set for traction and acceleration swao that motor man to 5.7 and make sure u get a new pcm computer for it if u swap it

  • Yea I was going to swap the motor for an LT1 but I ended up selling the car about 2 monhts ago. I do plan on getting a 95 or 96 Impala SS and going back to Chevys when I get bored of the 2002 Lincoln LS I just got recently.

  • When I bought the car it came with a Posi, I can spin the tires in the rain thats how I know. Heh.

    I believe the sticker on the trunk says G80, would you know if thats a tell tale sign of what the gear ratio is?But yeah I think an LT1 will be the only way to go.I'm thinking a mild rebuild on the LT1 I put in for durability and revving.

  • yeah the ratio is like 2;96 and lower on the 4.3 that pretty low but on the 5.7 its at 3;23 a lil more power not to sure what g80 is tho

  • Yea the car is stock with flowmasters. When I floor it it still takes a while to get going but once it does it feels a little faster.

  • If you haven't already you might try removing 'homeplate' and 'firstbase'. I put a sewer cap on the intake elbow with a rubber spacer I made out of another rubber spacer for an old MAF. I used a 3" PVC pipe when I removed 'firstbase'. This small mod helps free up the intake. Right now I have a stock dual exhaust system off of a 9c1.

  • Is that an unmodified 4.3 V8 with Flowmasters?

    Do you feel like you're getting more power with just the mufflers?

    I have a 94 4.3 also.
