  • fuck shawn lane

  • Check out Shawn Lane on Google Plus

  • Shawn is a Hero on the guitar.

  • HE'S GOT AMAZING BLAZING PHRASING, AMAZING.

  • gods talking bout gods, it is so good to have idols like these guys

  • good to see a legend like paul gilbert say good things about shawn. shawn is the best there is, best there was, and probably the best there ever will be

  • Can anybody tell me anything about the guitar he's using in this clip? I've only seen it here and on the cover of an old guitar player magazine.

  • boy paul's fingers are really smooth here

  • Blazing Amazing Phrasing lol

  • Is this a Demo Version?

  • Shawn Lane - The Most Terrifying Guy Of All Time.

    That about sums it up.

  • Party on Wayne!

  • @TheFriendlyfinger You literally are the only other person I know to point out how much Wayne Campbell resembles the early Paul. The humour, the hair (from early Mr Big days at least) and even voice are extremely similar.

  • ummmm if paul jazz up his solos a little bit then ummm he could snow down a lot of shaw lane solos u know..with that speed.but the fact of the matter is it seems pauls not too much in to jazz or i just did not come across.

  • What's "the electric fence"?

Also, why would someone ask about Shawn Lane in 1989 when he hadn't released any albums yet?

  • @Whackooyzero The Electric Fence is Paul's jokey covers band, with Jeff Martin (from Racer X) and his friend Russ (now in Steel Panther).

And guitar nerds would know about Shawn Lane early on because of his demo tapes, and bands he'd played in as a teenager. If this clinic was at a music college, the tutors might've had copies of Shawn's tapes, etc.

Nerdy answer, you get what I mean anyway.

  • @Whackooyzero electric fence is paul gilbert's cover band

  • Shawn was a genius!!! If you don't get it... well,

that speaks volumes about you!!! LMAO!

  • @Ellinarkkari

the moment i saw you used "lol" in your reply i knew not to take you seriously.

  • @Ellinarkkari

you must be joking if you think petrucci's stuff is anywhere near as hard or complex compared to shawn lane. petrucci idolized shawn and would watch his videos to try and learn things from him.

  • What the fuck was with the beginning? Asshole crowd.

  • wise words from paul gilber on shawn lane.

for me shawn lane is the villan of the bunch

I don't experience problems with playing shawn lane material.

in fact I cought on quite quickly.

tell you what , I'm going to go to the bathroom and think about things and say some more.

now that I got my head on straight this is all very simple

do I want to be paul gilbert = that would be awesome

do I want to be buckethead = most deffinately

do I want to be shawn lane = my mind says no

  • @azkeyz You don't experience problems with playing shawn lane material? Please demonstrate. Also, don't knock on the deceased, especially on their videos. This is two video's now I've seen you trolling.

  • @azkeyz I only reason u don't want to be Shawn lane is because he is the only guitarist who died. If Paul Gilbert is Legend, Shawn was ultra legend.

  • that tapping shred is a good impersation of lanes

  • blazing amazing phrasing....holy crap

  • his laugh at the end the ''huuch huuch'' dunno why but i giggled XD

  • paul gilbert's stuff isn't too difficult to get down with the right amount of practice but playing most things by shawn lane is just damn near impossible even with all the practice in the world.

  • @jaranarm Paul, obviously, has the technique but he tries to stay to the "simple" stuff. That's what I like about him. Shawn Lane does all these fancy-pants stuff that I obviously love from a theoretical point of view but then again... Music is for listening. : ) He's just not my type I guess.

  • @Buttanick

i agree music is for listening and i do like listening to shawn's music way more. the only problem is that a lot of it is just so difficult to get down. much of paul's stuff is too "standard" for my tastes so perhaps that's why i like shawn more.

  • @jaranarm Paul Gilbert has tons of better compositions, technical isn't always better.

  • @shizzlinphil

it's not always about technique first. i think shawn had better compositions and more beautiful playing than paul did, they just happened to be way more difficult to play.

  • @jaranarm On the other hand Paul gilbert stuff is near impossible to play the way paul gilbert does.

  • @jaranarm Paul keeps it pretty simple. He's more into rhythm while Shawn is more into feeling. Meanwhile, they're both very technical. To me, it seems like Shawn Lane puts a bit more thought into his songs while Paul just plays for fun. That's what I love about Paul. Plus he's more into rock.

  • @jaranarm - Sure...I bet you've nailed down plenty of Paul Gilbert's "stuff".

  • @delandwill

well yes actually. his songs are pretty fun to play. not too fond of the tracks off his latest album, though. which of his material is your favorite?

  • I love how massive amounts of people can like anyone no matter what they do, how they act, how they look, who they are, as long as they're awesome at the guitar. Paul Gilbert could be a serial killer that blends new born babies and people would still be like "So what? He's awesome." Lol. I'm not trying to negatively imply anything here, I was just thinking of how weird some of the greatest musicians were and it never really mattered.

  • For me, Paul is the ultimate shredder. And I think he tears even Shawn Lane a new one. His attack, control and command is otherworldly. By the way, I am not disrespecting Lane. Guy was amazing, no question.

  • paul gilbert is such a clown...everytime he does a clinic is like stand up comedy lol

  • What's up with that weird clap thing at the start?

He has a few dorky..."special" ways of acting sometimes.

  • love gilbert but hes kin od a dork... both beasts RIP shawn Lane!

  • @headkickerIII

If paul is a dork, then he is a dork in the best possible way

  • You can tell he kind of wanted to say when you get home find some shawn lane stuff as soon as you can. Pauls a real stand up guy. Kudos

  • Awesome!

  • His tone sounds amazing on this vid.

  • Paul is pretty obviously high on coke in this video, hahaha. Oh well, I guess he was one of the few 80's rock stars that were smart enough to realize how bad that stuff was for them, and managed to kick the habit.

  • @ShogoKawada123 How can you tell? I always thought he was one kind of a goofy person :P How many souces can verify if Paul did drugs back then? (well i´m sure he tested some thought....)

  • Lol metalmatt

  • Anyone know how to play 1:05 to 1:12 or can explain whats going on?

  • @MetalMatt2510

It's sounds like a diminished tonality. Watch some of Shawn's solos closely, and watch his instructionals. He explains the in greater detail.

  • shawn lane played that chicken pickin!!!!

  • What's he doing at the start? Catching a fly? lol

  • Paul Gilbert for scaloped neck.? he's totally under Lord Yngwie. =]

    1 or 2) Shawn

    1 or 2) yngwie

    3 ) John Petrucci 90's

    4 ) Paul Gilbert

  • @trifermata very true .

  • @trifermata no paul is god

  • is that neck scaloped

  • @pgmsrock yeah i think it is. strange iv never really seen paul use a scaloped fretbourd before.

  • Paul is one of the greatest of all time and he gives huge respect for Shawn. That's class.

  • The electric fence? Is talking about hendrix?

  • @dannyhood66 If I'm not wrong that is the cover band of Paul Gilbert.

  • Paul is a amazing player, but even he can't compare to Shawn Lane. Shawn Lane actually talks about Paul Gilbert in a video, but its not very positive of Gilbert.

  • @joshmb24 oh no fucking way. you got it all wrong, man. you're looking at it as if anyone is talking about who is better. gilbert is a fun loving exciting and nice guy who rocks hard. shawn lane is a fat insecure douchebag who plays jazz. that's what i got out of seeing both videos. didn't say anything about skill or what was better, paul is just cool dude saying interesting things about another guitarist.

  • @gowplayer2 You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer, humbler musician that Shawn. Its not his fault hes better than everybody.

  • @gowplayer2 He was fat because of his disease, which ended up killling him. Besides, how could he be "insecure" having played in a famous rock band and toured the world with only 14 years old? By the way, jazz is way more difficult to play and to solo as well than a simple rock pattern - there are complex rithmn and key variations that are not present in rock.

  • @gowplayer2 and your an idiot commenting on something you know nothing about...............LOL,

  • scalloped fretboard

  • that guitar sounds like burnt toast passing through Shawn Lanes butt hole

  • shawn lane: the most terrifying guy of all time.

    pretty much sums it up...

  • 0:50 = Colorado Bulldog descending part :)

  • Haha paul gilbert is Bucket head!

  • @frik08 with that question paul was framed as buckethead...got caught lol

  • @frik08 HAHA..no he's not he was taught by him there are plenty of pics of Buckethead nowadays

  • Woooow,Sound so clean!!!

  • anyone who thinks anybody including gilbert was the better player is in serious need of a reality check. We are talking about Shawn Lane. SHAWN MOTHERFUCKING LANE

  • @Kingding6

    You are correct my brother!!!

And why would Paul talk about how Shawn Plays stuff that sounded two handed but Shawn played it with one hand... and then Paul imitates Shawn using two hands!!! Cuz he can't do it like Shawn did!!! And then he says, "the Electric Fence couldn't even come close to what Shawn was doing"... Paul was that guitarist!!! Some people just can't admit truth and reality... But we Know!!! Peace bro!

  • @oilkills And don't forget Shawn alternate picks 18.5 nps

and Paul alternate picks 15 nps...

And I know we all love both!!!

  • @Glorose7 how do you know?

  • @silkstringz

Willjays list!!! As seen in Guitar World mag...

Or google, Fastest guitarist list at

    sevenstring(dot)org

  • @Glorose7 So somebody just randomly picks a part of a song and claims to clock it at so and so speed? or is there someway I can do it my self?

  • @silkstringz

Willjay has spent hours just picking the songs! And then hours of studying footage in super slo-mo, looking at fret-hand and pick hand to be sure each note is picked!!! He's an expert and that's why his list was in Guitar World!!! You probably couldn't do it right.

  • @oilkills seems like alot of work! It just seems like you would have to set down with all those musicians and say, you play as fast as you can and well clock you! Im sure there would be some outstanding numbers, as they would be focusing on speed rather than triplet runs....although im sure shawn lane wouldnt be touched.

  • @oilkills Amen good sir

  • @oilkills not trying to start anything... but those solos where it sounds like shawn lane played two guitars... is because he did.. he even admits it in the video about Buckethead. He says: "I did some guitar editing in some parts where I'd record one guitar track and then another, making it sound like one, but buckethead thought I was doing it w/ one guitar, so he tried to copy it by tapping out the notes... and he came pretty close" either way they're all AMAZING!

  • @bgtre5o

That was one song and it was going at like 400 bpm.

Every other one of his songs is in a manageable time signature and is played in real time.. And it is insanity.

  • @bgtre5o No, that's only one perticular song that Shawn was talking about where he did that, it was called "Kaiser Nancarrow". Shawn would actually really play the stuff Paul is talking about in this vid, there are plenty of vids of Shawn doing it.

  • I think paul is better than lane at guitar. He's just so...good. I bet he didn't even practice those licks in this video prior, and they sound so cleeaan.

  • im pretty sure paul's on some class A drugs there... :S

  • shawn was a guitar ninja

  • Also, Shawn Lane played EVERY instrument on his album "Powers of Ten" Drums, keys, bass and guitar. The guy is a musical god.

  • wait, who's eddie van halen again?

  • @PooPoo2U

    you're kidding right?

  • Check out how advanced Paul Gilbert is at his age.

One guitar prodigy complementing another guitar prodigy.

  • LOL shawn plays just pentatonic.... Gilbert now vs shawn would be pretty terrifying for shawn

  • @Najeepain HAHAAH HAHAH HAH AH A HAH A HA HHA

  • @Najeepain "shawn plays just pentatonic" Huh? Shawn used tons of atonality and synthetic scales. His legato was and still is untouchable. Just look at the vid, Gilbert has to alt. pick and two hand Shawn's legato licks! lol

Even if Paul can do it now, Shawn would have been progressing himself also. By the way, ever hear Shawn play piano? He didn't even spend all of his time on guitar and still killed it.

  • @EricBass83 You play bass??? Play guitar and show me what you can do before judging abilities paul is a genius, Get out of my yard/ scarified acoustic 3' e's for edward.. LEGATO IS EASIER THEN PICKING idiot

  • @Najeepain Actually I play guitar and bass and I'm putting vids up today. Paul says it himself, so your disagreeing with Paul, the genius? You obviously know nothing. Avenged sevenfold LOL! And name calling, you poor sad child.

  • @EricBass83 haha show me your best playing... Like i said before.. paul also admired hendrix greatly will u tell em he hasnt surpassed him???

  • @Najeepain I don't compare players like that. Paul is a shredder, Jimi was blues/soul. People do different things and hear sounds in their head they would like to achieve. Music is about sounding and feeling good, whatever the speed or technicality. I'm not saying Paul isn't amazing or that he's "less" than anybody, he's an inspiration like all the greats and a cool person. You just can't deny Shawn's abilities. Props on not name-calling man, don't be "that guy" lol.

  • @EricBass83 thats the thing.. Gibert did a fly me to the moon cover... (swing jazz) he digs into multiple styles and it angers me that he's often discredited. He's so diverse.. Checkout songs like curse of the castle dragon and 3 e's for edward.. and get out of my yard. As far as comparing.. Its just natural. And i just think he surpassed shawn techically. as far as feeling? You can watch paul and tell he feels as much as the next guy... And to you too. I like having discussions without disses

  • @Najeepain So did shawn lane you idiot. Paul gilbert and shawn lane have played together on the same stage. I mean i love paul and i think he is one of the best who ever lived but shawn was just on a different level...I don't even know why im arguing with you. Shawn lane could do things almost no one has ever done. Paul cannot play the solo after "not again" live. sorry but he CANT

  • @TheWhocares233 shawn lane couldnt play get out of my yard live. if your saying he could then your the idiot.. HE had technique. but not as much as paul.. he did have feeling from out of this world.. but technically his music isnt on pauls level

  • @Najeepain Paul hs many more songs more difficult than get out of my yard...Shawn could easily play goomy live if he could play the solo at a musitron clinic he did....

  • @Najeepain Shawn was Paul's hero! Didn't you know?! He even had his friend Shawn play keys at his wedding!!! Didn't you know?! BTW, Pebber Brown was the principle teacher of Buckethead. Paul and Brian hung out for less than a year.

  • @oilkills actually if you look up the interview of paul and chris for young guitar, Randy rhoads was pauls hero. he says so specifically... BTW. Paul taught buckethead despite how long.. He even uses some of his licks. look that up too

  • @Najeepain

Randy died in Mar of 1982, Paul was just 15! It was a few years later when Paul met his hero, the great master, Shawn Lane. BTW, Paul, Buckethead and Rusty Cooley have adopted some of Shawns licks... especially that stretched out intervallic. Admit that you didn't know about Shawn playing keys at Pauls wedding!!! I know you didn't... But I did!!! I'm from Pauls home state!!! Now go wiki Pauls home state!!! lmao

  • @Najeepain

    *facepalm*

  • @Najeepain You're saying this on a video where Paul is saying how Shawn's technique was terrifying. I'd say Paul would admit Shawn Lane's better, but he just did in the video you're watching.

  • @Najeepain You know nothing about shawn...

  • @TheWhocares233 You know nothing about guitar

  • @Najeepain I might not know much but i know enough to tell you LOADS of GODLY guitarists such as paul here, Buckethead, guthrie govan,.....ETC.. praise shawn as a insane guitarist for skill almost never reached by players....Shawn uses loads of diminshed stuff as well you idiot so obviously im not the only one who knows "nothing"

  • @TheWhocares233 Agreed, Shawn is a guitar god for guitarist, not 16 yo Avenged Sevenfold fans.

  • @TheWhocares233 paul is a NICE GUY he disses no1. he said he picked up pentatonic licks nothing else.. Oh and who taught buckethead??? oohhh ok... They look up to him.. gilbert also looked up to jimi hendrix. you going to tell me he hasnt surpassed him... your naive

  • PG was playing some awesome stuff there!!

  • Everyone on this thread owes it to themselves to check out Danny Gatton playing the Sleepwalk solo.

  • he gives props where props are due

  • COLORADO BULLDOG!

  • Could you believe that Gilbert is petrified by Lane?

Oh yes he is, i would too.

  • @brunthroath6912 Gilbert is better now. Maybe not then, but in 2010 Gilbert is king.

  • @westboarder

Gilbert is a great guitarist, but he will never touch Shawn Lane, and he will be the first to admit that.

  • Almost none can touch Lane. The only one who could compete with him is Yngwie :P

  • YJM???you are kidding right. He is only one of the most one dimensional players out there. The only guy that comes to mind when comes to Shawn is Guthrie Govan, and even he cant play like Shawn. But Howe,Garsed,Schackinger,Govan,All much more well rounded players than YJM especially Govan.YJM plays the same stuff he's been playing since Alkatrazz and no where near the same league as the few I mentioned. And there is alot more guys to mention.

  • @petiethepitt He doesn't have to play anything else. He influenced more players than all of those you mentioned when he invented the neo-classic style. He's one of few players who can play extremly fast but still put a ton of feeling into the palying. But well, it's all about personal opinion. To me, the best players is Yngwie Malmsteen, Shawn Lane and Paul Gilbert.

  • We are all entitled to our opinion.

But how many someone influenced 2 decades ago has nothing to do with todays standard of a modern virtuoso.

I think to make it today players that are more well rounded in many styles is much better than being awesome in just one like YJM.If you dropped anyone I mentioned in any music from Blues,Cuntry/Jazz/fusion,Metal or R@ Roll,YJM would be lost in most geres outside his own.Everyone else would be able to kick it.Thats what I mean when I say well rounded

  • I think YJM does what he does very good, but thats where it ends with him.

Thats why IMO Govan,Howe,Marco Sfogli,Lane, etc are on another level than YM,Cooley, etc.

I mean they are all amazing there is no doubt about it,but todays guitarists are just something else all together. And I would never be able to say any one player is the "best" just to many amazing players out there today.

  • @petiethepitt Hey what's up? I've seen you comment alot on guys like Shawn and I gotta say, I agree with you 100% on your comments man. You're takin the words right out if my mouth lol.

You got great taste in music man, and you know what you're talkin bout.

    Right on brotha!

  • @petiethepitt Unfortunately Shawn could not play funk. He was in at a guitar clinic here in Memphis with a guitar shred buddy of mine named Anthony Crawford and drum great,Dennis Chambers. I barely knew Shawn...He was one of the smartest guys I ever met. He played awe inspiring piano and everything else but Shawn could not hang with da funk and gave up trying to keep the groove. Anyway Lane/Hellborg album "Icon" was there best album

  • @osiruskat

That's someones Opinion!!! And because Shawn was a musical Genius... I would respect his opinions!!! But he only had kind words... for everyone! It's the sign of a Great Man(hint). He specialized in jazz-fusion, and If Shawns songs are in 5/16 and 11/16... I'm pretty sure he could do 4/4 okay! Don't believe the hate!!!

  • nope.. hes still not better than lane... even in 2010.

but hey paul is still my fav shredder.

  • @brunthroath6912 Eh. It's all subjective at the end of the day.

  • I'd believed he was scarified. HA!

I really deserve a thumbs down for a joke that bad.

  • Lmao! yes its silly but clever, but hey at least someone had to say ti:D

  • @brunthroath6912 shawn lane is a monster shredder even tho its not metal it doesnt have to be like paul said blazein amazing phraseing i love metal to the bone but i love this guys style to

  • for all of you who jsut keep repeating that shawn wasnt technical, just fast

look up MyShawnLaneVideos' channel and find the video 'Shawn Lane test drives a white strat' and tell me you can come even close to playing any of that at average speed

  • Respect the dead T_T

And more if that dead person can kick almost everyone´s asses on the guitar...

  • lol, "he's got blazing, amazing phrasing" *pause for laughter*

  • @brandon5pennies Dude shut up, and get off Shawn Lane's dick.

  • Comment removed

  • @brandon5pennies Fuck you.

  • Comment removed

  • @brandon5pennies I thought so too, too bad your sarcasm sucks balls.

  • Comment removed

  • @xXNeoShredderXx i shouldn't even respond to the stupid ass remarks you make that have no relevance whatsoever to this video i commented on paul gilbert's opinion of shawn lane and said i think there are few musicians out there who can challenge that level of musicianship and that's subject to opinion but that's my personal opinion you obviously like starting shit by making comments about people when more than one person has said the same thing i've said good job dumbass

  • @brandon5pennies Tldr. Ahah, you're all butthurt, lmao.

  • woah! Three Humbuckers. That's crazy! No wonder he had a good tone in this video.

  • he did have blazing, amazing, phrasing

  • Shawn had such a deadly combination of both technicality and musicality. I've watched and listened to hundreds of guitarists and musicians in my lifetime and only a tiny handful have really come close. You don't have to like his music to realize he's possibly the greatest guitarist ever. I'm saying this and he isn't even one of my favorite players.

  • i've never seen him play a scalloped guitar

  • God bless you Shawn...

  • Both Shawn and Paul are great guitarists its really cool to hear them talk about each other and try to mimic each others styles.

  • paul's kinda tripping tongues on coke

    hahaha

  • Regardless of whether or not Shawn Lane is the fastest picker out there, he can still out-shred the majority of us, and he was adept at both guitar and piano. It's hard enough to master one instrument, but he mastered two. He was a spectacularly gifted musician, and for that, he will be sorely missed.

  • @6672rock I also read that he was a good drummer too! He had one of those musical genius minds.

  • would be nice if he could teach as well as Pebber Brown

  • yeah it would be xD

  • Again, Shawn alternate picks over 18 nps

    Tiago alternate picks 16 nps

I don't know what that other thing is(economy) but it sure ain't alternate picking!

  • I do kind of think Paul's a little better, but it's pretty damn close.

  • @MrSalamander7 Paul would probably disagree with you... AND Paul alternate picks 15 notes per sec... Shawn alt picks 18.5 nps... BTW, they were good friends and Paul had Shawn play keys at his wedding! Peace...

  • @oilkills

True, but Tiago Della Vega picks even faster than Lane, but I don't think that necessarily makes him the best. Where did you here 18.5? I'd always heard 17. And Paul's humility doesn't really prove anything. Either way they're both gods.

  • @MrSalamander7 see the video: Lane Gilbert, Timmons NAMM Jam... go back 2 months and read the post by MyShawnLaneVideos. He discusses Tiagos true ability and it's not what they claim. Wiljay is thee authority on this topic.

  • Both are amazing but Shawn is definantly more technically skilled.

  • @TheWhocares233

He's deffinately faster, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

  • i love paul but i doubt he could do "Shawn lane technique clip" the rest is opinion. You can't say someone is better at making music.

  • @TheWhocares233

That clip is pretty sick, but I'd match "Paul Gilbert: The Ol' Six String Twanger" against it.

  • You're joking right?.... i love paul, but you've got to be joking there.

  • No. What Shawn did in the clip you mentioned really wasn't overly tricky or hard to do, he just did it really fast. For most of the vid he stayed on the same frets and just moved up the strings. Paul, on the other hand, started on the first fret of the first string and ended on the last of the last in half a second. Am I saying that clip out-did all of Lane's work? No. But that clip? Yes.

  • shawn lane is the greatest guitarist to ever live both technically and musically, so no, speed doesn't mean anything, but it's true nonetheless.

  • That is not true. That is an opinion. You dont know about every guitar player thats ever lived. Personally I am more impressed with vinnie moore and Michael romeo.

  • "but he somehow do it on one hand" lol paul forgets his grammar when talking about shawn. shows how awesome shawn was.

  • shawn where??? from sweden:P

  • i thought he said "he is somehow doing it on one hand"

  • is that a scalloped fret board? first time i've seen gilbert play with one :/

  • It definitely does look like one, I was gonna ask the same thing.

  • I love this Ibanez. paul can I buy it from you?

  • Is that neck scalloped at all?

    <
