For 316L stainless root passes you have to make sure to grind the pipe about 1'' to either side of the root inside and out. The coating makes it hard to burn through if you don't.
Yeah, I always walk the cup on that stuff unless it's in a position so that I can't. An old friend told me the trick to it: turn your machine down and SOAK the bead in there.... Of course, on one inch, you're still traveling pretty fast. I shot these vids with my cell phone and I didn't have anyone to hold it for me so I could show some of the welding live. I ain't all that great at making videos.... (LOL!)

can you walk the cup on the root because its so thick? Thin stuff is a bitch because you have to freehand.

I just got my stainless 6g 2in pipe ticket. It goes with like water compared to not having a purge.
