Sorry Walsh, not Trane changes. He is playing off of the tri-tone sub. So...instead of D7/D7/G7/G7 on the first 4 bars of the bridge, you can do A-D7/Eb-Ab7/D-G7/Ab-Db7
Lol. Obviously anyone who can play at all would only say "every possible rhythm changes" as a way of illustrating how much they dug the solo. Those are the facts. Have you got them straight now?
@decus69 Damn, I guess I'd better stop teaching, then. Thanks for pointing that out. Out of curiosity, what harmonic device does Eric use in the first 2 bars of the bridge at 2:07? I'm only asking because you obviously "know shit," and that type of substitution, which he outlines as clearly as humanly possible, is something you would learn in your first harmony class or book, so you MUST know.
@altosax314 guess you would know all about that? bet ur still playing that alto papa bought you and made u play at all those family reunions in your pissed up short pants. Guess life was hard for some folk? Dont work "destruction of rhythm changes" will make you feel like a man ;-)
@decus69 Yeah, Benny Reid doesn't know a lot of tunes. Or how to play jazz. Or saxophone. That's why he's signed to Concord, with all the other jokers like Sonny Rollins, Brecker, Eric Alexander, Gene Ammons, Ronnie Cuber, and all those other no-playing hacks.
@altosax314 There is no questioning that that he is a good player. just, that there are an infinite amount of ways to play rhythm changes. Get your facts right before you try and defend a position that wasn't being questioned in the 1st place.
Outstanding!! I had the privilege of seeing Eric Alexander last year and he's also a wonderful ballad player. In hear George Coleman and a little Bob Mintzer--but he has his own voice. A really fine player--and contrary to the opinion expressed by another poster--there are very few indeed who you could class as 'better'
check out brecker -oleo 1983 or Don Bradeno - Rhythm-A-Ning or thomas chapin or tony malaby or antonio hart or mark turner or loren stillman or jimmy greene or david sanchez or miguel zenon or joel frahm or ellery eskelin or liebman or potter or marsalis or redman or marcus strickland or most sax players in the current professional jazz scene. Eric can play the horn but his ideas bore me there's more to jazz than eight notes, however he is a William Paterson Alumn I gotta show him some love
Fair point--I acknowledge that some of those you list (but by no means all) stand right up there. I guess there will always be differnces in listeners' tastes. And of course we could compile a list as long as both our arms if we went back a few generations!
Now really what's the point of saying something like that? Do you feel better about yourself now? Do you have examples with an explanation of why there a somehow "better" than this?

eric alexander is the same caliber musician as someone like javon jackson and nobody cares about that caliber except for college music students or high school students aspiring to be college music students. there is nothin wrong with the guy there are just alot of other guys that i'd rather be listening to. and yes believe it or not "somehow" there are more harmonically and rhythmically satisfying players out there. btw I feel fine about myself, is it okay that i dont dig eric alexander?
This sounds great. I'm doing a lot of homework and practicing on the rhythm changes right now. It's something I've neglected. I've been able to play on Giant Steps for years but still can't survive on a rhythm changes tune. I'm going to though. I'm on it. And thanks for the inspiration. I'm going to practice my guitar.
For all of you who said mean things about Eric, don't forget he was in the Basie Band, and Basie did not hire stiffs...

Not many people have such a command of the horn like Eric does. He's my current favorite player and DAMN can he play fast.

Very George Coleman-ish. They all can play, though.
