@smurfieboo The birds are just too frail to have sex. They have to artificially inseminate the female birds with semen obtained by putting a probe up the male's rectum and shocking him so he ejaculates.
I am not a vegetarian, but Foer is an amazing writer and has been my favorite author ever since his first novel came out. I just have to read this book by default simply because he wrote it.
Does anyone even know why you're not allowed into livestock units? It's to PROTECT YOU. It's called disease prevention - maybe some of you have heard of it? Bred to be sick isn't even a feasible term. Yes animals are bred for maximum feed efficiency, but that doesn't make them feeble in ANY aspect. The vegetables you eat are just as susceptible, if not more, to disease from human farm workers. Those "cage free" and "free range" eggs you so desperately long for are taken off the GROUND.
@xBoilerUpx - Last year the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) conducted an investigation into SmithField Foods in NC, the WORLDS largest pork processor and producer; 27 million pigs a year. 27 million pigs and not a single veterinarian on the site. It wasn't until the public found out what was going on that SmithField started to make changes. Also, his numbers like 90th percentile, even 99th percentile, are valid because only 8 - 10 companies control a majority of the meat we consume.
@xBoilerUpx - Are you defending the claim that giving animals genetically modified corn, growth hormones, and the NON-CLINICAL use of antibiotics isn't unethical or a health concern & not just for the people who consume the meat but also the animals being killed? Is it healthy for 7 year old girls to have breast development 4-5 years earlier than usual or more resilient forms of E. Coli being found in thousands of pounds of ground beef in the past year? I agree with Jonathan, bred to be sick.
Where exactly did Jonathon Safran Foer see these cattle? Texas is where most cattle in U.S. come from. I have lived in Tx all my life. I grew up on one of the largest cattle ranches here. We had 8000 cattle. It was pasture land, trees, windmills. Nice place for a cow. Every rancher I have ever seen raises their cattle on pasture land. You know wheat & grass.
So the fact that cattle are raised in horrible environment 99% of the time, is stupid & ludicrous
how do you reproduce non sexually?

@jsuglia - I noticed you've been commenting on a lot of Foer videos - may I ask where that "beef" comes from?
