Somedays i just play Pink Floyd all day and write and paint....The music puts me in the place i need to be....Over there..somewhere else...far from my shelf..left of here..Somedays i wander far from home plate....and my box is empty ....except for a pair of skates..that i put on and follow the sunset...
I fucking love Richard Wright, he was such a great artist, but so overshadowed by Barrett, Waters, and Gilmour. May he rest in peace in that Great Gig In The Sky. Him and Syd both.
Now that I think about it, I really wonder what would have happened if Pink Floyd had been dominated by Rick, instead of Roger (and later David) after Syd's departure.
@r0binl44n Yes 10 years anniversary of the atomium when this clip was made (1958 -1968). Think it is the same day (they are wearing the same clothes) as the "See Emily Play" clip where they are pretending to play cricket
if you like syd's music, please check out my music! Search for Roger Delarge on facebook or youtube! Syd is my favorite artist and a huge inspiration for me! thanks ;)
Anybody ever notice how the theme music from The Tomorrow People resembles 'Paintbox'...? Then again, The Floyd's 'One Of These Days' is obviously based on the theme music from Doctor Who. And for that matter, 'Paintbox' owes a lot to The Beatles 'A Day In The Life'....
what ??? its like all their old stuff was horrible until their new stuff came out and it was like wow, Im confused their new stuff sounds nothing like their old stuff
This was the B-side to Syd's awful "Apples and Oranges". This song is so much better. Rick was the band's best vocalist and always seemed to be underrated, compared to Roger, David, and Syd.
@hatmap Apples and Oranges is a Masterpiece ! Who else but a really talented person and band could have made it ? ; it is punky, quirky, slapdash and then treats us to this uniquely blended and refined dreamy music structure. A great influence on bands esp. Blur and Bowie. Paint Box IS brilliant too ; i first had it when i bought RELICS as a new release in 1971 for 99p from Richard Bransons' Virgin Records Mail Order ad. in Melody Maker weekly Rock newspaper.I think it was before he had his shop
@hatmap I disagree that Rick was the best singer, David Gilmour was easily. Rick was a good backing vocalist but you wouldn't get him singing songs like Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond or Comfortable Numb as good as Dave. Also Apples and Oranges is amazing don't knock it!
Floyd followed the Beatle's policy of never having single A sides or B sides on albums (at least in U.K), altho' Careful With That Axe (last B side) was on Ummagumma ~ altho' strictly speaking that was part of the 'Live' tracks. Think the first single to break with that policy was "Another Brick in the Wall" Part II from "The Wall".
@ShiftyStealthy One of the first I ever bought of Floyd music because it was still easy to locate on LP and marked for budget sale! Collection of Great Dance Songs was for me, a major disappointment, at that time I so wanted some COOL Floyd material
@whichonespink357 Rick wrote the song entirely. Syd plays on the song but by the time this video was done he'd already been replaced by Gilmour, so it's Gilmour miming to Syd's guitar part. I notice that Gilmour's face is rarely seen - as if the band didn't want to draw attention to Syd being gone.
Brussels with the Atomium in the background. 10th anniversary of the World Fair and the Atomium when this film was made. This song is uniquely Rick Wright, along with "See Saw" 'It Would Be So Nice" and 'Remember A Day'. Unfortunately a B side to a poor Barrett song 'Apples And Oranges', although to be fair to Syd he did want the more interesting Jugland Blues as A side.
One of the first LPs I bought was the RELICS album, which was not something PF had much say on. I didn't hear Embryo till much later when most of the old archives were raided, then knowing the story of it being recalled since it was never finished
@MetallicBill Interestingly, 'Embryo' was released on the Harvest double disk compilation Picnic (a breath of fresh air) in 1970, which also features Syd's 'Terrapin'. It was the only track not allocated to an LP. Relics was released May 1971. Curious mix of tracks on Relics. Had to buy Pink Floyd Masters Of Rock to get the single A and B sides, and even that missed off 'Point Me At The Sky'. Never heard PMATS until Youtube, strange?
@SuperNevile EMI released it while the Floyd were on vacation, as stated several sources...for Picnic. I got a tape of Masters of Rock from a Co-worker in the 1980s or 90s....long ago. Point me at the Sky I heard from a CD archive, rather then LP or tape ...before YouTube, thankfully! haha Boots of the Floyd stuff is not too hard to find in the past few years, even decade!
last night i had too much to drink, sitting in a club with so many fools, playing the rules.. trying to impress but feeling rather empty i had another drink a drink a drink drink drink drink...., what a way to spend that evening...they all turn up with their friends arriving late but in the scene i should have been....far away......gettin up i felt as im remembering a thing before....i open the door to an empty room then i forge eeeeeeeeeee et.....musical break.....contd...
@gonzataker Yes, it is a shame that they recorded the promo videos for Apples & Oranges and Paint Box well after Syd was out of the band. In both videos, you've got Dave miming Syd's guitar parts (and in the former, Roger miming to Syd's vocals).
I don't mind this, it's pleasant enough, captures the spirit of the age etc. It is also substandard imitation Barrett fodder. Fortunately for them, they could and would do better.
My oppinion is that Radiohead are trying to copy Pink Floyd so much that they are really boring...it is obviously, don't you think?I mean there is one Pink Floyd
56dinosaur, I don't believe simply because Nick is not miming the song exactly as recorded implies he was not the drummer on the track. Keith Moon never played the same thing the same way twice, and this was the late 60s after all ;-). If you've ever seen Pink Floyd at Pompeii, you know that Nick could/did play a very similar style to this, not to mention the overrall drum sound is very similar.
