  • Survival of the fittest.

  • i cant seem to do that stance??? on the back foot, is it supose to be flat down, or on the ball of ur foot???

  • @rabbalaba You should really stop posting all these long comments. It's annoying, and really, if you think the vid is crap, why did you watch it? Save the space for people who actually have something to say!

  • It's really stupid when it comes to kids. They try and imitate what's seen on tv like UFC.

  • the style is simply the base. u r not necessarily limited by the style if u do not wish 2 b. u can open up and build on it

  • I mean no disrespect, but it looks like a particularly...erm..painful stance to hold. You probably need to train a while to be able hold it long, right? My back leg would really burn!

Another question: My instructor thinks Mantis came from Crane. I've read stories about it's founder simply poking a P. Mantis with a stick for inspiration. So..where does your instructor say it came from?

    Thank you.

  • @emulare11 Hundreds of years ago, a man named Wong Long (not Wang Lang as sometimes misinterpreted) invented the Mantis Style while watching a praying mantis fighting and winning against a larger cicada insect while he rested under a tree on a mountain side. He was intrigued at how the aggressive movements of the smaller mantis were able to overcome the size and strength of the cicada, and used it as a model for inventing the praying mantis style.

DO you know how stupid that shit make you look, when you say that shit?? hahaha you lost the debate! EVERYTIME!!!

  • Any self defence expert will tell you that standing on one leg in front of an aggressor, with you hands like that giving out the message that you want to fight, is a bad idée! This is my biggest problem with praying mantis style and the wing chun style, both I have practised for a long time. Whats your opinions about this? Send me a message!

  • This are not the basics of mantis.. and the second stance has nothing to share with the style.

  • The second stance in the first step in the whole system.

    Mar Bo.

The cat stance part is what gets mixed into the basic system. Later, If I recall correctly.

  • The first step exposed is correct in the position of the legs, but the hips are not. Secondly it is not to be taken as a first stance but it is a reaction stance which should be proceeded by a 功步 (gongbu). The second stance resembels a little a 四六步 (or si liu bu), but the feet are positioned incorrectly and there is no kick-boxing style jumping in northenrs Mantis. BTW, cat stance??

  • Un monton de maleducados comentando en youtube?

  • seen this alot and from waht i know u are allowed to use other upper forms with this leg stance thats whats good about kung fu is the flexibility

also seen where they use it but the front foot is more bent inward id like to learn that its probably the same as this though correct me if im wrong

  • um monobrazuca postando no youtube??

  • un yankie dando clases de kungfu?

  • um analfabeto postando no youtube ??

  • may i ask u guys something? in ur opinion ( i just wanna know) whats better the southern or northern praying manis styles?

  • Northern = more usage of the legs

Southern = more emphasis on the hands

    to put it reallyyy simply

  • what does emphasis mean?

  • Importance, I guess. But there's really no "better"... it's just preference.

  • yeah i hate when people say how kick boxing styles such as muay thai r so much more better then anything else (been watchin way too much UFC its gettin to them)

but i say its the fighter not the style,

tastes in fighting styles are like tastes in music

  • @joelaka3pac123 I used to say a lot of crap before i tried kung fu myself. Been training in kung fu for 4 months and i can only say 1 thing for sure. You know NOTHING until you try it (and any other martial art in general).

  • I like how he started to laugh when he said when your legs are open like this

  • I'd say he giggled...like a school girl.

  • You get kicked in the nuts in class if you do this. Its a light kick, but every one laughs and remembers to keep their gates closed.

It sucks being the objective lesson. But you have to laugh.

  • There are a few comments about Bruce Lee and Praying mantis, can I just advise to be careful here, there's Northern like this and a shorter Southern style which is nearer to Wing Tsun .

  • For Mobility? How the fuck is the stance mobile?

  • you can fall back or go forward quite easily with the empty step foot and it is easy to direct your gi in the stance as well.

  • I agree with the fall part.

    lol... gi.

  • Its not really a stance. Mantis moves the mountain around while fighting.

It rarely is un-planted. And when it is, its not for long. The cat stance in part of the fluid movement from the second stance, and into further stances.

He is simply showing how the weight is planted during a snapshot in time. Rarely would a person just stand there like that in a real fight.

In a bar and you see someone come to punch you. You would walk into this stance and then walk your foot into their jewels.

  • I have one question tho, the vids are all good but what about the other hand/arm? Is there any way to block the other arm when pulling off your techniques?

  • put the hand you are grappling, when/ if you grab it, in the way of the other as in grappling hands technique, or block the attacking arm and go around to the outside of the persons body and there you have good attack spots.

  • Thank you very much!

  • can he show an example of how it would work when hes not defending himself against air

  • Bruce Lee couldnt see the point in the praying mantis stance... dont think anyone can...

  • Actually I can see similarity to this and the Bai Jong stance, the weight distribution and the width of the stance are the same... ...it's just that the Bai Jong keeps the rear heel up instead and the elbows in for defence really...

  • lol yeah in other words it's similar in that it's completely opposite ;-)

  • Heheeh, only really on which foot you keep on your toes and the positioning of the elbows... ... ...

  • Bruce Lee's phasic bent knee stance is sort of a praying mantis, or back stance where most of one's weight is on the back leg. Thereby one can flick a kick with the foward leg very quickly.

  • I'd really suggest you do your homework before opening your mouth.

Bruce Lee's stance has almost equal weight distribution between both legs with a slight lean forward.

You'll find evidence for the slight lean in the Tao of Jeet Kune Do in which Bruce mentions "maintaining a slightly forward centre of gravity."

  • Keep on flipping through the pages of 'Tao...' until you find 'small phasic bent knee stance'.

  • It's weird how I don't remember reading anything by Bruce lee or other Jeet Kune Do instructors instructing one to put most of one's weight on his back leg.

  • Its not weird, Bruce Lee did the opposite to Praying Mantis. He had more weight on the front leg so he could spring forward by pushing away with the back leg. No one is wrong its just different theories on how to do things.

  • if he had more weight on the front leg than he'll be leaning forward too much and he'll be slow if he tries to spring forward

  • oh really? i thought that he would use something similar to a cat stance, except for wider, and bigger, and it was like 60/40 weight ditribution on the legs, but ill take your word

  • maybe because its not jeet kun do its praying mantis. its very different

  • Actually he originally practiced Mantis style along with Wing Chun...he later stated he doesn't really like the idea of animal styles...not just praying mantis

  • first of all...the praying mantis kung fu is a style of shaolin traditional kung fu,the one with the tiger, praying mantis, snake, crane, leopard, frog style...second of all...if u do master the traditional praying mantis style you wont get your ass whoped...who ever wants to try that can tell me...and ill be more than happy to oblige...the practical stuff is users choice...one must remain calm in order to use the style...but on the street they all tend to do damage more than focus on what they use.

  • Although many sources say that Wang Lang developed praying mantis boxing at Shaolin, other sources indicate he may have developed the system at a taoist temple at Laoshan, where there is still a monument to him to this day.

  • All of those techniques are more for theory rather than practical use - when it comes to practical use all of the theory stuff you do will make you get a "feel" for the style so that you can carry on the same mood in a fight.

  • he'll get his ass whooped.

  • the relaxed guard reminds me of JKD stance.

  • really nice
