Fantastic, sounds like this was recorded in his prime. What is the recording date? - Thanks so much for posting this and all the other MacNeil recordings, I admire this singer.
I had the pleasure and honor of hearing him sing at The Met in the 1970's.Rigoletto,Tonio,Iago,Scarpia.Being in the in the house, one knew they were listening to one of the greatest Verdi baritones ever. Not a creamy sounding studio artist, but one producing a quality and volume of sound that was a force of nature.
Really? Macneil's voice was much bigger and heavier than both of them. And darker. Listen to the duet of MacNeil singing the duet from Rigoletto with Siepi who was a basso profondo. MacNeil is as heavy and dark - if not more so - than Siepi.
@ElSalvador50 Yeah, but I am not sure Hines was heavier. I guess you would have to hear them both live. lol. Both were HUGE voices. I always was disappointed that Hines got woofy early on. I think Mardones was pretty heavy.
Riposi in pace, questo enorme artista lirico ci ha lasciati, forse ora verrà riscoperto come di solito avviene... Grazie

@saiserieht yes -you are absolutely correct -- the wobble isn't evident yet --- he sounds like a youthful artist here!

I think "the darkness of a bass" is an overstatement, but nonetheless, a premium verdi voice.
PS: I didn't used to like Cornell, but he's been steadily growing on me.

How is it an overstatement?
MrCafiero 2 years ago
well, he's dark, but not bass dark.

What bass do you think was darker and heavier?
MrCafiero 2 years ago
Sam Ramey, Boris Christoff

I'm with you on this. If MacNeil didn't have such ease with his top, he would probably would have been a bass.
leadoffeohippus 2 years ago
@MrCafiero The only voice I can think of that was "heavier" than MacNeil's was Jerome Hines
ElSalvador50 1 year ago
@ElSalvador50 Ruffo. Hines was a bass so it is hard to compare. MacNeil had more squillante than Hines.
MrCafiero 1 year ago
@MrCafiero I agree completely, I only made that comparison because you were comparing his voice with basses with another user.
