  • What's with the stupid echo

  • Cool, Mr. Bell!

@a lot of you on here: please stop tryna teach me how to appreciate the "higher levels" of music or whatever. we get it: you have a tiny penis. message received. you can stop waving it around now..

  • many people talk about passion in music. how can you hear it? I'm just curious

  • ouch, he must have been put in the er 4 some head tramua or somthing givin me a headache.

  • name of peice?

  • caprice N0. 4

  • what's the name of this piece ??~~ X( ...i really like it

  • @thoroughlyThoreau well, maybe that is the secret of playing on 1 violin the sound of 4 violins ;)

  • My ears broke at 0.25.

  • LOVE<3

  • The people who dislike this probably can't play the first note

  • @yenniesaurable the people who dislike dont like the echo

  • I saw this guy at the BSO. Joshua Bell = awesome.

  • caprice no.24 by paganini..he is paganini's heir

  • oh it turns out I was right...

Another aspect of Paganini's violin techniques concerned his flexibility. He had exceptionally long fingers and was capable of playing three octaves across four strings in a hand span, a feat that is still considered impossible by today's standards. His seemingly unnatural ability may have been a result of Marfan syndrome.[8]

  • @maleavail But according to other sources, the doctors that cut off and examined his hands after his death didn't find anything extraordinary. I think "his seemingly unnatural ability" might be more the result of musical genius and 10 hours of practice a day then anything else.

Anyway, the Marfan syndrome can merely give you long limbs and fingers and flexible joints. It is not like it changes anything about his position as the best violinist of all time.

  • paganini was considered the best violinist of all time.. so to copy him is likely unrealistic and very friggin hard... Probably was exceptionally physically talented.. beyond joshuas physical talent... there are differences in physiological talent.. I am only assuming this however.. but the pieces look ridiculously hard...

  • what the FUCK.

  • I just lost all respect for him..

  • the beginning sounded sloppy, just sayin

  • very good, but i don't think we need any van halen in there....

  • OMG!! is this Pagannini´s reborn??? AMAZING!

  • gross, I just vomited from my eyes AND ears

  • the ending part doesnt sounds nice

  • GOSH THIS WOULD BE PERFECT WITHOUT THE ECO.

  • when Paganini was playing this piece, people from the audience rushed on the stage to search for violonists hiding behind the curtains...because the piece sounded just like 4 violonists playing at the same time. And Joshua Bell is one of the few interprets who can play this piece exactly as its composer: Paganini. It is not an "echo" it is the technique to play on one violin the sounds of 4 violins...

  • @csenge19 yes. it's a hard technique.

  • so nice ^_^

  • what was he thinking!!!!!!! Echo effect!!!!

  • TERRIBLE! THE ECHO( echo, echo.echo...) just completely ruined this peice. Definite fail. ._. sorry but it's true.

  • Stupid echo

  • OMFG -.-

  • why ruin the great interpretation with an annoying echo?

  • What the fuck?

  • Yes that echo is horrible.

  • THAT SUCKED.

    what happened to this video?

  • This was horrid..

  • I think so, too !!!

  • what the fuck did you do to this video

    fucking ruined

  • the echo sounds cool, but based on other peoples comments they were looking for the original without effects. maybe you could put that up too?

  • @hkhannah99 the echo ruins the crispness of the piece, which is why people are hating on it so much.

  • @thepromman i know. it makes the notes sound less pronounced and clean. It very much ruins the tone quality

  • The echo ruined the video. Thanks.

  • yeah, the echo is a bit much...

  • Joshua is the best violonist of our times.Clasical music is'nt about technics. The worst interprets consider technics more than passion and flowing with music. When Joshua interprets Paganini, he is the music himself, and his interpretation takes you to higher levels. You feel you have to cry, cause Joshua's interpretation touches your soul and spirit. And that sound at the end is like they were 5 or more violins on the stage playing at the same time. Read Paganini's life and you'll understand

  • @csenge19 joshua bell is a commercial violinist, money making machine nothing else

  • @csenge19 Don't forget Hilary Hahn

  • @maddy3187 Hilary Hahn is another great violonist, I appreciate her very much, her interpretation too takes you to higher levels.

  • Please note how he moves with the music, not against it. He flows with the music, his movements help amplify his interpretation of the piece. He is literally dancing with the notes to produce this beautiful piece.

  • I don't appreciate the ridiculous echo effect.

  • Comment removed

  • @TehTacoNinja You do realize I was not referring to Mr. Bell's performance of the piece? You do realize I was instead referring to the electronic after-effect, which is anything but subtle (the panning at least should give it away)? You do realize it's not a "song," but a caprice? You do realize I am an actual violinist and not just your common youtube idiot? You do realize none of these technically qualify as grammatically correct sentences?

  • same here

  • Stop critizing world class violinists. You are not them and you will never play as well as them. You have a right for your own opinion but lets be positive! They have God given talent! You can't compare one to another, they all have strength and weaknesses. One is not better than the other. They all have things we like and dont. so dont need to be negative about your comments

  • @ATielker

I totally agree with u man!

  • @Piyaphob Thank you. people are ignornant and will never learn to enjoy this music just for what the piece is. People will always criticize someone for stupid reasons. Half these people don't even play a musical instrument. If they dont like this video for joshua bell or his interpretation then dont watch it.

  • @ATielker

Someone say "Kenny G's technic is not good"

I always reply "Well, i like what he plays, and that's what matters"

when someone's music is known to be giving happiness to at least one person, that is enough to proof that at least the musician somehow does good job of being one.

There are various definitions of "music".

To me, it is the sound that fullfill human's mind, makes a human feel good. Any musician who achieves this goal deserves to be referred to as a "good musician".

  • when you move around it shows te passion.

  • when you move aroung i think it means your enjoying it; better that then see a musician that robotic with no passion.

  • the whole video, (as strange as it sounds), all i wanted to do was yell at him for flailing around.

  • jaja ni vanessa mae puede go joshua!

  • ♥ the echo :)

  • He is very, very good but will never reach the level of Jascha Heifetz

  • @racer500gp You are correct. The Bell will NEVER reach the level of Heifetz. Please read Uncle Junior's comments on the Bell's playing of Bruch concerto.

The acoustics sound like he's playing the violin in the shithouse. Everything is blurred. Paganini is easy to interpret but hard to execute technically. The Bell, however, makes it look harder than it really is with unrestrained body movements & constipated facial gestures. Heifetz set the standard for the 24th & was Michael Rabin's idol.

  • Very good!!!!!!!!! Joshua Bell is incredible but he dosen´t better violinist of world !!!!!!

It is Franck Peter Zimmermann!!!! I´m spanish, sorry if I have spoken evil!!!

  • He's a tad better than "a good violinist". I wouldn't waste my time on Paganini

    - a genuinely and indisputably minor-league composer - at all if I were him... what's the point, for such a sublime "interpreter"?

  • this is incredible!

  • His hair is so bouncy...it adds extra stage presence. So cool!

  • still amazing with the annoying echo!

  • Never heard it played like that..........

  • Bravó!!

  • I love Joshua Bell but I must say that my ears hear "labor" in the opening of this piece...In listening to the legendary violinists of whom there may be 3 or so, even the "labor intensive passages sound effortless. Still beautiful...not quite iconic..:) but he is young...

  • @WUTaTALENT well, there was this awful echo to blame as well

  • @metalheadlass Even with an echo as an invader of quality..it is still beautiful. He is so very talented. Even perfection has stairs to reach it..:)

  • Very good but Leonidas Kavakos is the best...

  • what is this called?

  • @hale2jasper This is the 24th caprice from Paganini's 24 caprices.

  • Joshua Bell IS the Energizer Bunny. He can't play musically, but has to jump about. At the end of the performance, all that is left is a big key sticking out of his back. He is completely unwound and looks as though he just had rough sex. He is the Andre Rieu of Classical music-- a mere dilettante with a huge ego. There is no need to bounce about like that. It only detracts from the music. Imagine Heifetz or Oistrakh pulling such antics!

  • hee hee his arms reminde me of the energizer bunny. no offence i love his playing. i love his ave maria best

  • cant believe he was ignored.. people are so biased...

  • T_T

  • Even though it is unfair to compare violinists, I think Perlman plays this much better. Great job by Bell though.

  • Just show biz ......

  • 24th caprice...my favourite

  • Comment removed

  • yes it is

  • Comment removed

  • go and watch the hilary Hahn paganini caprice No. 24 I'll send u the link by message. minute 3:55

  • Erm...yes it is....just with a bit of technology.

  • I think he might be a vampire, maybe thats why he's so good at the violin.

  • And Joshua Bell is amazing! I think just few violonists can play Paganini's compositions. Joshua is one of them. He moves like that because he is in a "different world" when he plays. He can bring heaven on earth. And I love and respect him for that.

  • @csenge19

    @csenge19

I agree with what you say about Joshua Bell. He plays extraordinarily well, but I have to disagree with you that only a few can play Paganini's pieces. Anyone can play Paganini's compositions like Joshua Bell; it's a matter of putting so much heart and practice into it. You have to love something to be excellent at something.

  • you people don't understand Joshua Bell, and you don't understand Paganini. When you hear this music, you hear an entire orchestra! The sound of an entire ORCHESTRA played with a single violin...Search for Paganini's life on the internet, and you will see who he was and what was so spectacular about him."Sounds of different musical instruments and animals were often imitated in his compositions"

  • I've seen this violinist a couple times live...the skipped notes and intonation slop come from constant adjustment of bow to violin. Too much moving around for show vs movement out of emotion.

Watch footage of the greatest violinists of our time and note the absolute attention to control of the instument.

Perfect performances are really quite rare...even Heifetz has blown a note or two in passing, but If one focuses on what the audience hears, rather than sees...this is perfection

  • @guarneriviolinaddict -"I'm a musical totalitarian."

  • @guarneriviolinaddict Good review of Bell. He dances about like he's high on coke. There is no need to do this. I don't know if Heifetz ever flubbed any notes {which ones?} but Bell certainly has. I showed this to my African wife, and she told me, "He dances around like Masai warrior." As one person noted, he reminds me of the Energizer Bunny. And that sums it up.

  • @unclejuniorsoprano why are you so negative?!

  • @Baytuch Read my criticisms carefully, if you will. Then, type in "Heifetz master class" and watch & learn. You might also want to read books by Sherry Kloss & Ayke Agus, who studied with Heifetz. You might also wish to read the biography on Michael Rabin. JB does for violin playing what John Dewey did for Education & Jimmy Carter did for American; ruined it. JB's career is built on cuteness & arrogance, not professionalism & virtuosity. His legacy is that of good looks & sloppy violin playing.

  • Whoaa, I am definitely a hardcore Joshua Bell fan, but that was a mess, especially the beginning... :'(

  • well,,,we cant expect him to be perfect...

but i'll tell you, he sure is damn close

    :]

  • he´s a great player but

    he is out of tune.

    he is too sharp.

in the double stops he misses the tone completely

  • Comment removed

  • oh god he's so damn SEXY!!

sorry. I had to say this.

  • Virtuoso...beautiful..^_^

  • He's even better in person!! Love JB!

  • beautiful

  • j-bell is fukin G, dayum dis shyt is hella tight

  • I think it's way too fast. My brain almost exploded from the rapidity and high notes.

  • Probably this were exactly Paganini's intentions!

  • I would have to respectfully disagree with "wesman" at least in part. I do agree that the effect is strange and that people who love Joshua Bell over rate him and people who hate him under rate him. I have seen him in person several times and generally enjoy him a lot. Here I think he is clearly out of tune at more than one point and it just is not a piece that resonates with his strengths. It's OK, but not his best work.

  • If you could point out individual notes that are out of tune, that'd be great. That's what I thought.

  • He's a wonderful virtuoso...and I don't believe he is out of tune...he played beautifully..but that's just how I see it...music like so many forms of art is in fact subjective..

  • But intonation is not subjective. That was out of tune.

  • justwarren that is true, however im judging this based on it as a LIVE performance, not a recording, which is always tune perfect. Live, directly recorded performances are usually different. I've seen the best slip in them lol :), so i judge them differently.

  • Wesman, I like your comment(s). I am not being a contrarian here, but pull up Hilary Hahn playing this piece, also live, and her intonation is as solid as a rock! Again, I am an unabashed Hilary Hahn fan, so you may take my opinion with a grain of salt, but still, in tune is in tune.

Although, to your point, one can never be totally sure with videos. It may very well be the quality of the recording which might not be representing Mr. Bell's actual performance accurately and fairly.

  • My mistake, I don't think you can find her (Hilary) live on this particular Paganini, but you can find other equally difficult live performances by Ms. Hahn, which are, as I said, quite solid, to say the least.

  • @justwarren it sounded like a mess because of the echo (from the mic, perhaps?) that you can hear more prominently at the end

  • And i am also a violinist. (proficient if i may add) so i know ecactly what im talking about, overall summary

effects: strange, they take away the majesticness of the arpegios.

tuning:10 (all notes are in tune)

    emotion:10

This is a great performance, and yes people that love joshua do over rate him, and haters under rate, but his strength is in his musically-powered self.

  • then if you are a violinist

    you must suck.

because he is out of tune.

not all the notes are in tune.

    he misses a lot

    comparing with other performances

  • Mrvivaldirocks: I know he played some notes put of tune, but you must also remember that this performance was live, which calls for being in tune to be based on a completely different scale. You must also consider the odd effects used in this movie. Overall you could hear the theme played very strongly, although tone was not "perfect" enough for your liking. I mostly agree with anatoni. Music is about enjoying sound, not criticizing others opinions on it. Do'nt be a hater >_>

  • holy crap i had to learn that part for my orchestra audition, and while i praticed it my fingers esploded lol.(jk) But seriously, being able to play the part let alone perfect screams, "im pro deal with it so stfu" I love it when people attempt ever after watching this to call joshua a terrible violinist, because they obviously fail at music. The effects were weird but overall this was clean and filled with the aggressive emotion this is intended as.

    5/5

  • whoah. I am jealous by this guy.

  • I'm a violaist in my high school symphony and am still in the process of learning technique, i find that Joshua Bell has an amazing bow hand and aspire to learn from these videos to improve my playing. The comments on his video should be about his video, not on other peoples comments. Let's just love the music people :]

  • i think it sounded awesomr with echo :)

  • The echo makes it sound rough. A piece like Paganini's capriccio 24 should be clean to really admire the talents of the performer. It sounds way better, cleaner, and smoother when it's played by Itzhak Perlman or Heifetz. I'm not trying to diminish Bell, I'm a big fan of his, but I'm just expressing my opinion.

  • Wow! Judging by the comments I'd call him the

"Elliot Fisk of the Violin World"

  • simplemente magnífico

  • He has a grand passion, and I love his improves... . Thank you!

  • shut up

  • joshua bell is overated by people who love him, and underrated by people who hate him. he's a good violinist but his strength is in his interpretation.

  • @dxhaloxc yes! his interpretation is matchless

  • @dxhaloxc I'd say is weakness is in his interpretation

  • He looks 16! I know he's much older than that, but his stupid hair!!!!

  • lol..he is 42...that hair is awesome though...it's his signature..it flies whenever he plays

  • 42?! dude could pass for late twenties/ early thirties the least

  • I know eh?..crazy!!

  • I love his hair too:) It almost adds character to the music when he plays.

  • this would be a great video without the stupid echo

  • i dont like the echo either.

  • he play before excellent for example Sarasate introduction and Tarantelle you play excellent I have not word's to comment your playing. It was in your style but know you play like god student

  • I doubt the people critiquing Joshua Bell for this performance are professional violin players. Based upon that alone, they don't need to match his skill to critique him. His career is music, and in a way, he sells his talent to the masses. I love this piece, and I find what Bell did to it disastrous. He butchers the detail in technique by slurring through the notes, making clear errors, and the effect is horrifying. If this is the best performance of this piece you've heard, then defend him.

  • Jashua, you are just amazing. Love and Respect from Kazakhstan.

  • Incredible performance--whoever edited the sound really screwed up by changing the overtones on the second 1/2 And to "JoshyBellSucks" and others who are of similar opinion:

only a complete loser with no life nor taste for real music would go around youtube finding videos of an increduolous musician like Joshua Bell and commenting on how awful they are; you are not true players but critical listeners who have no idea of the hard work & commitment it itakes to reach even that level of mastery

  • Why are there so many losers running from video to video on youtube, saying shit?

  • agree

  • PEOPLE OF THE WORLD WHICH I NOW DOUBT I AM FROM: if you hate bell so much, why are you even LISTENING to his videos and justifying it with a comment? he is great, i have lots of him on my iPod....

  • PEOPLE OF YOUTUBE, THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE ARE JUST HATE FANS, THEY OBSESS ABOUT THE THINGS THEY HATE, AND I SPIT ON THE ONES THAT COMMIT THEIR USERNAMES JUST TO TICK PEOPLE LIKE ME AND OTHERS OFF. "Spits on JoshyBellSucks"

  • NOT IN TUNE.

  • isssavestheworld, I salute you, sir!

Given that I take this performance as a personal insult, goodness knows what Paganini would have made of it. Tortured to death, then mutilated, this beautiful work was buried by Bell in a shallow grave in some woods.

Bell's shoddy musicianship is an affront to all civilised people.

  • if you hate him so much, why name an account after him? when you truly dislike something, you do not make a point of putting your state of being into a full hatred and knowing-ness, rather, you concentrate on other things which less infuriate you and ignore that which does.

  • No, you're being childish.

  • save us all some time and ignore it, would you?

  • Sheeze, what are you, a bridge troll? Watch your mouth.

And seriously? The guy's a heel. As anyone who has worked with him. Or wait, that's right... you've never had an experience with anyone who has ever made an impact.

Nice violin playing though. Paganini is loads of fun

  • Oh god, around the 0:20 mark is just excruicating, absolutely, toe-curlingly terrible. Actually, the entire video is beyond my worst nightmares.

  • What an insult this is to the Great Paganini. God forbid this SHIT should ever have been published. What's with the echoing sound effects? Why is Bell having a kinnipshin fit? He looks like a horse chomping at the bit, bobbing himself up and down.

If you REALLY want to hear this caprice played well, don't waste your sight and ears on Bell. Instead, listen to Heifetz, Michael Rabin, or Ricci. Even my dog, Heidi, could play this clip better than Bell.

Read my comments on "his" Tzigane.

  • no it was not sarcasm, he is one of the best musicians alive. that's why he happens to get so much praise. apparently you aren't famous, so please don't criticize others not fit to your level.

  • You are right, I am not famous; but I am fortunate enough to be neither deaf nor blind. The ability to hear is all one needs to get the measure of Bell's talent, or lack thereof; the ability to see ensures that his ridiculous antics infuriate you to the point that you burst into flames. That has happened to me a number of times, and I have to phone the fire brigade to come and put me out - and it's all thanks to Bell.

  • Well then DON'T listen to him. You may not be deaf or blind, but if you're so smart why do you listen to him at all. Do you know the term tune deaf? You, my friend, are tune deaf.

  • i wasnt saying he is tone deaf, i was correcting someone saying "tune deaf"
