@flysofree3 Maybe you should learn to spell and punctuate before you critique other people. Jeez, get a life. Maybe try sending some encouragement? This chic actually has a dream, which is probably more than you have, if all you have time to do is go around telling people how to do things, and what needs to be done.
Good luck! :) Bur I must say, unfortunately, you look too big to become a race rider. Have you ever thought of exercising Thoroughbreds instead? I understand that the bay horse is only 14.1 but I still don't think you are small enough. But if you are, great! I have ridden for years now, and the challenges are many - but it is so worth it! Good luck chasing your dream! :) And if you have any questions about race riding or exercising, feel free to ask!
good luck mate, the biggest thing about being a jockey is to maintain your weight. here in New Zealand an ideal weight is about 50kg, not sure what that equates to in your country though. Stay fit, stay focused and take the good with the bad.
Wow! That is so great that you have a dream and are working to accomplish it! You go girlie!! Don't mind all these stupid people who don't know what they're talking about! They're not going to be sitting in the winners circle a few years from now! :) Keep it up!!
@xxtasha10xx - there is not a height limit - weight is the issue - an apprentice jockey needs to be around 105-108, but after they are no longer in the apprentice category they can be a bit heavier. Calvin Borel is around 5'7" which is pretty tall for a jockey. I think the average is 5'2".
@tonyr620 - am thinking that is about 140 pounds - US riders are lighter - 140 pound jockey would not get to race in the states, too heavy. Personally I like that European riders can be a bit heavier because it is not as hard to maintain weight.
a good idea to email to someone like Lovato that runs jockey school. He has tons of videos here you can watch and learn your rein handling, position and whip handling. You are up very high off the saddle, which is a problem. You need to learn to take a cross. Ask him if you are the right size for being a race jockey and what exercises and practice to do.
this video is pretty old. ive gotten WAAAY better since then. that was my first time in a racing saddle, and between that and the fact that the horse i was riding is only 14.1 hands is why i was so high off the saddle. i know how to take a cross, if you want proof check out my updated video.
I know how ya feel. Being in a family ful of jockeys.. But now i am too tall... I was watching ya vid.. and i aint an expert but you seem too sit really high in the saddle... if you are closer with the horse you have less chance of things going wrong...
Nice job but.. hope things work out for you... :) Good luck.
good grief, READ THE DESCRIPTION! i was just getting used to the racing saddle, i had never been in one before. i wanted to test it out and see what it was like. you have no idea how much work i have put into this over the months since this video was shot. i'm a freelance exercise rider now! and hopefully will be racing next year
@jockeylizard congrats on making it! its really nice to hear of people making it in the racing world! especially whenever you post stuff on youtube and stuff and all people do is criticize it and put you down! i know all about it trust me I exercise racehorses during my summers and anytime i post stuff people constantly like to try to put me down but i dont let it get to me and neither did you! once again congratulations! = ]
@Macmiller502 Would you people shut your faces? I'm not even going to try and argue too much, because apparently if you don't understand that there's this thing called.... 'practice' and she's actually doing it, you won't grasp what I'm saying. This girl is trying to pursue her dream, and what are you sitting around doing? Being critical and cold. Wow. Get a life.
if you want to become a jockey you need to work your hands even more then your legs. racehorses pulls so much that you need be almost as strong as the horse to hold the horse from galloping on the track. You should also start train on real race court soon.
i want to become one to can u help me with keeping ait down and stuff im only 15 and wont be starting for about 2 yrs and how do you get your balence better on the horse
Seems to me someone has sour grapes. I know for a fact that jockeylizard has worked the last 2 years on the track, has busted her behind and has the 110% support of family and several trainers already as well as one training center owner. You only live once and it is okay for dreams to change, but they CAN"T come true if you quit before you start. Not only that the times are changing and there are more and more girls riding and winning.
I know a lot of your racing knowledge Pliokota because I know people that were at the BRS at the same time as you!! haa.
I didnt say YOU couldn't do it. I said you won't do it WITHOUT 100% support. But who am I to stop you wasting your life?! Go for itt! I have seen many a stable girl with dreams of becoming jockeys but the trainers never do give them a ride.... I've got one on the 25th in a hurdle raceee WOOPPP.
Oh, well in that case I apologize. and you do have a good point. I've been really lucky to have great people supporting me and it wouldve been a lot harder to get this far if they hadnt been there for me.
actually i joined years ago i just forgot my login details but as a jockey I think I know what it involves and I am merely stopping people wasting there lives chasing a dream that is jsut that. A DREAM. hardly any girls make it. the only ones that do are either amazingly talented or they have amazing support from their family and trainer and owners. dont try and put me in my place. i know a hell of a lot more about racing than any of you lot put together!!!
I think you also need to stop being so cocky & full of yourself. Interesting that you call youself a jockey. Dont get me wrong, I'm not calling you a liar. But its beyond wrong of you to tell people they should stop pursuing their dreams. Who are you to tell them that. And what exactly do you know of my racing knowledge?! Grow up, and stop being so mean to people. Seriously, what's the point?!
Yeah go ahead, tell me I can't do it- I've already heard plenty of that b.s. and it isnt going to stop me. It's MY life and this is what I do. And thanks for the info, but I already know how hard it is.
you'll never make it as a jockey without everyone backing you 100%. it takes more than dedication and determination. its a way of life and you can't just claim to want to be one. you don't know how tough it is until your 5,30am starts and 6.30pm finishes are a way of life. i think you all need to look into properly.
I think you need to stop giving people such a hard time. I'm sure they've looked into it more than enough times! You only joined youtube today..... and you're going around saying hurtful things to people. Back off mate! Take a chill pill =/
I really want to be a jockey SO BADLY and the frustrating thing is that my family and I LIVE right next to a racing yard!! I'm lucky enough to be allowed to ride my horse on his gallops sometimes but my oarents disaprove of me working and exercising horses there though...:( but one day I will be a jockey and my parents can't stop me!!!!!
ya might want to try the tack lizardjockey took (I'm her mom) - we tried to talk her out of it for a year, and she made it clear that if we didn't support her, she would go straight to the track when she turned 18 - needless to say, that proved to us she really wanted this - so now she has her full support as she begins her college career at the North American Racing Academy. Ride em girl!
i went through the same thing then i started going to racing farms and looking for trainers when i was younger and im 14 soon 15 and i jockey, western pleasure, dressage, english and i train break and raise horses,
its very hard and its never gonna be easy but good luck to the ones that want to be a jockey,
Awesome! I want to be a jockey so bad also. But my whole family disapproves, and theres no way I will get away with not going to school to get a digree in something OTHER than being a jockey <.< But Im still gonna try =P
Wow, Great job! I have high hopes of becoming a jockey, too. I want it more than anything in the entire world!! I also practice like you on my horse, but also take lessons from an exercise rider. I'm so proud of you! Lets keep in touch, and I know someday you and I will be racing against each other ;)
Wonderful video! I really enjoyed watching it. Especially the parts with you on Belle practicing in the jockey's saddle. You're going to be all set by the time you go to the NARA. :) That looks like so much fun!
It was also really cool the way you did the pictures and colors and everything, for the video.
Thanks! I kept my stirrups pretty much where she had them, except evened them out as she usually rode with one longer than the other. My mom mowed a 1/4 mile track in 1 of our fields the other day so after I've gotten Belle on it a couple times I'll put the racing saddle on her out there. Thanks for the tip, I'll probly take the stirrups down for at least the first couple times on our little track so I have more of a chance of staying on, lol.
Great video Elizabeth! I think you did good in the jockey saddle for your first time. Very cool changing the colors and great job of making this video and putting it all together! You do not have to ride that short especially at first. Drop them down a couple holes until you get use to it. I actually never rode that short even when I raced. even with short legs I have, I was more comfortable riding a little longer then most jockeys. Everyone has to do what's best for them :) Cheers! Frankie
ragstoricheslover- I worked as a hotwalker and stablehand at a training center this past summer. It was hard work but I loved every minute of it! Hopefully this summer I can do that again and also maybe start working horses a little bit in the mornings.
What I try doing is start at ur normal sturrip length and get shorter and shorter...shorten them twice a week :)
