But, still, as a group, many white South Africans can trace their roots in South Africa back almost as far as white Americans (300 years). There's no other 'home' for us to go to.

Apartheid is something very recent and its effects are still experienced today. Apartheid was a better system because a lot were forced to be in a certain position for the benefit of a very few. I am not an economist but it seems to me simple math, the best system after capitalism to create a few priviledged people!

Nor can I deny that racism amongst the white population is still a real problem here (and that all of us are guilty to varying degrees). But, still, as a group, many white South Africans can trace their roots in South Africa back almost as far as white Americans (300 years). There's no other 'home' for us to go to.

It was convenient to exploit the native populations for cheap (or plain forced) labour. Some thought it was their duty to 'civilise' the natives. The list goes on.

i don't agree. i've only been to SA for like a year as a volunteer. but i was suprised by the friendlyness and hospitality blacks showed me, a white man, 15 years after the end of apartheid. while on the other hand, when i told white people that i go with the minibus through joburg and work in hillbrow and stuff they'd be suprised i'm still alive. so from my perspective whites had much more prejudice against blacks than the other way around. still racism is equally bad from both sides.
