This scene still gives me goosebumps. Superb acting, pacing, direction and music. All the parts needed for greatness are there save one: Believability. I just can't get past that utterly *ridiculous* water-is-lethal-to-aliens plot device. Aliens want our planet but water is fatal to them? Waitwhut?? Why not something more believable like fruit juice or soda or *anything* but water? Our planet would seem like a toxic waste dump to them... and they WANT that?? Argh! /facepalm
Despite what people think of Shyamalan as a filmmaker today, or the behavior of the actors in recent years, this is an amazing movie with a beautiful message. Thank you for uploading this wonderful scene!
I will never ever be able to watch this scene without crying. It's such a strong scene and I watched it at a very important time in my life. Thank you, M. Night Shyamalan.
@McTatarka lol.. how can someone say Signs is stupid movie!! you would have watched it as an Alien movie! MNS is way ahead of us, so its not easy to understand his movies..
"So, what you have to ask yourself, is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles...or do you believe that people just get lucky? Is it possible, there are no coincidences?" Hmmmmm...I'd have to go with LUCKY.
I LOVE Phoenix's yell....hawt!!!! Both him and his brother were good looking...I fell in love with the Phoenix bros after watching this movie and Stand By Me!! =]
Im not really a religious person, but i do believe that there is something out there, watching over us, what i don't know, but we tend to take comfort believing there is someone else other than us in this world. This movie is an example of that. Except the aliens are trying to kill them...but how they were stopped with water, that was an amazing scene, it all made sense.
@wowcreve I like the first half of it until I realized that Mel Gibson is a fundamentalist Christian, therefore be in a movie with a Christian bias towards the plot. Basically, God's playing favorites with his creations. It was all part of God's plan to have a guy fall asleep at the wheel, kill someone's wife, and just before she dies express a message about the future. In the mean time, send his other creations to a planet that comprises of a liquid that's pretty much lethal to them.
@MisterMcKinney He's actually a Christian pastor who's lost his faith, that's why God sent the aliens to help him, and perhaps others around the world who aren't in the film. That's why I think Shyamalan decided to tell the story from Mel Gibson's character's viewpoint, to help remind us we should never lose faith.
@wowcreve But he lost his faith because his wife died. And she died so she could tell Graham how to defeat the aliens. What kind of crummy circle is that? : P
When the wife dies, she tells her nephew 'to swing away' and for Mel 'to see'.
Then Mel gives an explanation as to why she said such confusing things as she died. "All the little electrons were firing off in her head. There's no one watching out for us."
Basically the wife died to give Mel that message (from a higher power... GOD). So when the aliens came, he knew what to do. Swing away and use water against them to make them leave.
a knife chopped off his fingers they can't open doors and they fail in intelegence by being vulnerable to water and then coming to a planet 75% water. how come nobody stole their spaceship when they arrived i would've
i dont want to be sound stupid and stubborn to your complaints about the movie but the fact is that a knife will cut just about any kind of living tissue i know, the aliens attempted to contaminate the water so they would be safe, and their spaceships were high in the sky and invisible so it would be hard to steal them.
this is soooo emotional. just that revelation hitting him, that God was with him the whole time. And everything happened for a reason. So beautiful. I love movies that give you revelations at the end and the characters emotionally breakdown because of it. Thats why i think i love Night's movies so much. Lady in the Water is probably my favorite of his. Such an emotional and touching ending.
sure it can kill big dogs easy and jump massive distances, but it cant handle a guy with a baseball bat lol not the smartest alien ever... especially as it hasn't realise it basically surrounded in water lmao
Really wouldn't it of been funny if it were raining? Also I'm pretty sure that an adverse reaction like the rapid decomposition of tissue by water would be undoubtedly impossible. Because water is the foundation of life and I don't know if I am correct or not but it did show the alien bleeding and doesn't blood contain hydrogen? Really I think that this is a great movie even though it showed very little which also probably made it feel more realistic.
Yeah that is what the movie is portraying but I am thinking on a realistic and scientific level. I mean for a biological entity from another planet and galaxy to exist it would have to have almost identical living conditions to those we have on Earth simply because the conditions on Earth are rare and designed to create and sustain life. So if these aliens were to indeed exist then they would of been exposed to water already and of course water would of already been used and exposed to them.
Not necessariliy. Everything on Earth is Carbon-based life.
However, the next closest building block for life is Silicone and it could thrive in extremely hot conditions where there is very little water naturally present.
you see,my theory is this:that alien didn't come alone to their house.why would his friend leave but he stay?Revenge! That alien has only one reason to stay in that house and that is to kill the person who took his fingers.
this film is so under rated. amazing story and directing by m night shyamalan. great performances from mel gibson, joaquin phoenix and the woman who played the sheriff. an amazing score by james newton howard. 8/10!
It tied together the details from the rest of the film and revealed the purpose. Would you mind explaining what the film would/should have been without this scene?
The music is truely amazing, Hand of fate 1 and 2! This movie opened my eyes and made me think outside the box. Everything we do effects another. Things happen for a reason. There are no coincidences
Just imagine the carnage you could unleash on the visitors with a working firehose and Sammy Sosa's corked bat.
Without a doubt, "Signs" stands with "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" to form a cinematic golden trinity of terror and triumph. One day, M. Night shall once again reign upon us a story that will delightfully haunt our minds as his earlier efforts did so masterfully. Have faith.
Hats off to the actors. All of them. Lead by Mel Gibson and the little girl. Joaquin is perfect too. It's almost shocking to play this well. And the crying dinner scene...

"Look guys, how can they know, instantly what kills them on every planet? To everyone that's posted that, i'd like you to tell me every kind of plant, germ, dust or airborne-allergen on Mars that could be potentially deadly to humans. You can't can you? Exactly."
Because water is a simple molecule, and those other things are exceedingly complex biological phenomena. We know exactly what elements and simple molecules kill us, they certainly would.
i dont need to tell you every germ on mars that would kill a human being.. the lack of oxagen would instantly kill us.. besides last time i checked there wernt any plants on mars.. just dust and ice
We don't have all the facts about the aliens. Maybe they were in desperation and came even knowing that water was toxic to them, maybe they have some strange religious beliefs about the use of technology, maybe it was a right of passage, maybe they were just conducting a raid and moving on, maybe they have some other bizarre reasons behind it all. The point is we don't know everything, so there is always hope. It also made the aliens seem *truly* incomprehensible and strange in their psychology.
It's wonderful to see how all these different events and factors come together like a tapestry, what his wife says to him, the water, the bat, the asthma (for which he had just cursed God the night before). Shyamalan really opens it up and gives us that sense of unfolding events. And the symbolism of the water pouring down references to baptism and the rebirth of faith. It's an astounding film.
Okay, look all i'm seeing posted here are "why would they want to invade a planet that's %70 water if thats what kills them!?"
Look guys, how can they know, instantly what kills them on every planet? To everyone that's posted that, i'd like you to tell me every kind of plant, germ, dust or airborne-allergen on Mars that could be potentially deadly to humans. You can't can you? Exactly.
well the lack of oxagen would kill us instantly but yeah this dude has a point.. besides they took "us" most likely want to study why we arnt effected by water
"i liked the movie but it made little sense for aliens to be interested in a planet that is made up predominantly of water, which happens to be deadly to them."
Unless they were starving or doing some kind of coming-of-age ritual (the aliens could have been adolescents)
This film never gets old, I luv it, me and my family always choose to watch this over any other movie :P

Also, water is in abundance in the universe, along with hydrogen, etc., so they would have encountered it often before.

We know that THEY knew water was harmful to them. It said in the movie they had intentionally picked sites that were far from water.

i dont need to tell you every germ on mars that would kill a human being.. the lack of oxagen would instantly kill us.. besides last time i checked there wernt any plants on mars.. just dust and ice

I like how at 00:44 the aliens hand blends in with the kids shirt.

Okay, look all i'm seeing posted here are "why would they want to invade a planet that's %70 water if thats what kills them!?"

well the lack of oxagen would kill us instantly but yeah this dude has a point.. besides they took "us" most likely want to study why we arnt effected by water

"i liked the movie but it made little sense for aliens to be interested in a planet that is made up predominantly of water, which happens to be deadly to them."
Unless they were starving or doing some kind of coming-of-age ritual (the aliens could have been adolescents)
OverusedChewToy 3 years ago
If there adolescents wheres its zits? :) jk

"I wonder why the alien didn't fight back"
It's injured and scared--the aliens that came made so much noise etc. because they were just as scared of us as we were of them.
Also, you try fighting back when some bastards clouting you with a baseball bat :)
