I almost died listening to this song. No seriously, I dozed off at the wheel while I had this song playing. Luckily those groves on the side of the road snapped me out of it. That and my friends screaming in the back seat. Good times.
This song is about physcological and emotional pain that everybody has. Being dumped by your girlfriend, not fitting in at school, never really feeling like you belong. There is always something wrong or not quite right but you you can't quite put your finger on it. These are the kind of scars and problems he is talking about. Most of us have a sense of longing for something better than this life. Money is not enough for me to be happy, so beyond the setting sun sounds pretty good.
I'm a big switchfoot fan and have been since their "legend of chin" album. I'm also a christian and I know that switchfoot is a christian band, but I still don't hear any overt christian lyrics. If I didn't know about swithfoot, I would have no idea that this song has anything to do with god or heaven. I don't think this song is a metaphor about how messed up the world is either.
i love switchfoot... all of their music has the california tone to it. i always listen to switchfoot whenever i go to the beach, it always relaxes me, all of their songs are so uplifting
@57LANi94 well, that would make sense, because they're a band of surfers! the term "switchfoot" is actually a surfing term for switching your back foot with your front...there's a whole metaphorical meaning behind the band-name, changing position (in life or whatever you're going through)
i'm oldschool. whether or not christ was real is debatable. i think that western religion was perverted when original texts were translated. we lost so much, what have we gained.
the point i think jon foreman wanted to get across is that when we have a deep festering wound, we dont just put a bandaid over it and say its ok and that nothing is wrong. we have to treat the problem at its source, underneath the wound. The world is flawed, we look around and see all the things that are terribly wrong with this world.but we cant just say "thats just how things are." I believe in a hope that transends the hurt.that goes deeper than the wound.
I think youre all missing the overall message of this song.this song goes so much deeper than religion.God is deeper than religion.Jon Foreman wrote this song with this in mind; there is something wrong with this world.(The wounds) its a horrible thing to see all the hurt that is in the world.it's like a wound, but the hope that there can be a better tomorrow goes so much deeper than the probelms. that hope is Jesus Christ.he is the only real cure for the pain.
i dedicated this song to my older sister who has been a success at her 21 years, she is headed to spain right this moment to continue her education over there. i wish you the luck sis. Ill miss you past this setiing sun.
@567realmadrid Go ahead, but you are twisting the song into something it's not. There's no religious message here, because God is fact, not religion. I hope you're aware that religion is man made, and God is not. God wasn't made up, he is real.
@AaronCStudios i know God is real. it is just a song. made by a man. im sure the man who made this song wasnt expecting the whole world to hear it the same way he did. and just because i have 2 ways of understanding what this song means doesnt mean im twisting the meaning of it.
@AaronCStudios not to but in, but there is a religious message, its not like its a factual message, when people say that a song has a religious message, they mean that it is about a god, false or true, supporting or not, i dont think he meant it the way you think, and dont get me wrong, i dont think its religion either, God/Christianity is the love and service of God, and relational, while religion is the attempt to get to heaven, not necessarily to God/gods
@AaronCStudios Yes! I'm a worship leader and I have been trying to preach that for awhile. Relationship with Christ is true. Religion is what seperates us.
@Taptto most definitely... all of their music ahs that california tone to it. whenever i go to the beach i always have to listen to their music, it relaxes me. Switchfoot's music is also very uplifting
