@MrProster i'd say that it's insulting... when i see the price of the Eagles magnificent Hotel california album at only the equivalent of 5 dollars (here in switzerland) i found it already insulting for a masterpiece... but well ...at least they sold millions... this is not the case of "The man who built america" ...i think that it's one of Horslips best albums...frankly it should be at 20 dollars ... if we remember the first days of the CD's after all it s not so expensive...
THANK YOU for posting this. Takes me back - good days :) I'm sitting here smiling my face off. Great music. The music then was soooo good - here's proof.
I never knew they had a music video for this! I broke this album at my college radio station back in 1979/1980. Always came out of the news during morning drive time at the top of at least one hour out of four.
This song was one of the first 2 or 3 that I ever made a YouTube favorite. And, every coupla' weeks, I go back and crank out this old classic. I always have to remind myself how cool the flute solo is and how metallic the rythym guitar sounds. Saw them live once and Horslips blew me away.
Love their approach; love their delivery.
Kudos to Horslips from this side of the Atlantic. Cheers!

Loved this single in my midteens, had the "man" LP and played the crap out of it,Like alot of the other comments here i never understood why this band never made it bigger?. I guess commercial radio has been around longer than we think.but anyway this tune rocks!
I've just discovered this band and I'm a full convert! It sucks beyond words they never seemed to catch-on in the States. Instead we got 20 years of U2; joy... I've been asking everyone I know if they've heard of them and all I get is funny looks.
Their Band name originated from the The four Horseman of the Apocalypse. That interesting that they connected Horse with lypse from Apocalypse. I noticed that just now hearing the pronounciation of both in my mind and cleverly noting that. Anyway can see that though. Their a great band.
How the connection came about is funny. They were in a restaraunt before going on TV for the first time and they had to come up with a perminant name. They said the 4 horsemen and someone at the back said "More like the 4 poxmen of the horslips" hehehe A horslip is a flower btw
and nobody ever embraced this band. they had more to say lyrically and musically than 99% of what was out there but instead the usa embraced disco, the bee gees and rr about this time. don't get me wrong. i like the bee gees but the Odessa album's worst song was better than any of their 70s stuff. but i digress. anyone bothering to read this should listen to all Horslips songs graciously posted on here on youtube for which i am thankful. and don't get mad at my beegees comments. listen toodessa
OK. Late 70s and Rush is playing the Syracuse War Memorial in support of the album Hemispheres. Me and my buddy Joe Dwyer have front row seats and some band called Horslips is the opening act. They blew me away...this song REALLY blew me away. Went out and bought the album the next day. Horslips rules!
Just keyboarding 'LP' makes me feel old. (sigh) Horslips DID put on a great show though...I always thought I heard a little Horslips in Big Country years later. Just my opinion. Cheers!
Before the creation of MTV, HBO used to have "Video Jukebox", a short intermission program between movies, where music videos like this one and "Lonliness" (which I hope someone finds and posts here in the future) were showcased. What a great band this was.
Horslips was a real cool band. They started with quite traditional material which they soon developed into their very own sound combining traditional Irish jigs and reels with more modern prog/rock treatments. Finally they produced even clever pop like this but I love almost everything these guys did!
This single was handed to me when I was but a small child visiting Bristol for the first time. It was in yellow vinyl, totally cool band. First ever single I owned and I had it for free!!
You wouldn't happen to have the promo for their song 'Loneliness', would you? I remember it was done at the same time as 'The Man Who Built America'- same set, same 'dodgy threads', and a very cool song.

These guys were absolutely cool. Here in Windsor, Ontario in the seventies, when I spun their music to my friends they all came to be fans of the band. Great to hear them again. Thanks for the post.
Love ya . But , after all , it wasn´t just you irish who built that fuckin place . The scandinavians were there too . We were just as hounded and starved as you , believe me .
The swedes and the scots are ´boundend ´since time immemorial but the swedes /norse and the irish I just don´t know ... And still : WE FOUNDED YOUR FUCKIN CAPITAL CITY . Anyone dare to dispute me ?
I did read your comment,it makes no sense.Who are you angry at?!Why are you angry?! The Danes founded Dublin, so what? Your post is just an incoherent rant.
No, I dont think anyone will dare to dispute you. Largely because they wouldnt want to engage in meaningless discussion with someone with either a poor grasp of the English language or, more likely, the early stages of senility.
I remember hearing them on the old Alan Freeman Saturday show and although I only heard it once I still remember the words to one of the songs --- I sat on the doorstep and slowly watched her walk away, she wasn't sad she wasn't angry, but she didn't hear a word I said. Can someone tell me the title???
'I'll be waiting' is the song and you can see the video here on youtube from a couple of years ago in Dublin and if you look closely you'll see a famous Irish actor in the audience,by the way its on the 'Man who built America' album/cd
I remember seeing them live in a tiny little club in Providence,RI in 1979. I don't think there were 20 people in the club. I sitll love them almost 30 years later. Where does the time go. Thanks for the post.
Saw them in '80 in Coventry Heavy snow so about 20 there, they told us we must be true fans to come out in weather like that - best gig I have ever seen! And I've seen Elton John, Genesis etc. etc.
Remember seeing this video on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 79. Barry Devlin used to live around the corner from me -- wonder what he's doing these days?
