Wow, never seen this intro, I bought the box set a few years ago but haven't gotten around to watching more than the first few eps (which I shall rectify soon!)
There was a version of this with a voice over from Cowley (Gordon Jackson), which said: "Anarchy, acts of terror, crimes against the public. To combat it I've got special men - experts from the army, the police, from every service - these are The Professionals."
Gordon Jackson is remembered for playing the butler in Upstairs Downstairs but the Professionals as George Cowley his acting part is immaculate that you think you were watching his real life on TV. RIP Gordon Jackson.
ace! my dad used to say when i was younger that near the end of the intro they jump in and speed off cuz there fry-up at the cafe down the road is ready lol
i seem to rememmber reading or hearing somewhere once that in the sreies to start with bodie and doyle drove cars supplied by leyland (think doyle had a dolomite sprint) but leyland wasnt very helpfull and for the next series they used fords and the capris but i recall doyle with a rs 2000 also. could this be part reason for change in intro also?
You are right: during the first season the BL cars disappeared and the team started driving Fords. From what I know, this wasn't the reason for the change; it was just a stylistic decision.
There were a few versions, including another with a slightly different musical arrangement, and, as glenrea mentions, one with a VO: 'Anarchy, acts of terror, crimes against the public. To combat it, I've got special men. Experts from the police, the army, from every service. These are the Professionals.'
These weren't alternative titles, but the original titles for the 1st series in 1977! They only exist on one or 2 episodes now, this being one of them. There should also be Cowley's speech on this intro....
Fast press on 3 repeatedly.... Now now Doyle....

Hilariously camp. The new credits kicked arse, though.

I like this opening. The normal opening is still ace.

I wish they left these titles on the repeats rather than change them for the "car smash" opening.

Awesome. I loved this programme as a kid. Just watching these titles and hearing that music again makes me want jump up and smash some chairs a shit.

Most definately, the other titles are heaps better. Bodie was my favourite. Teenage girl's dream.

Very good, but you can see why they went for a Granada smashing through a massive plate glass window
