If you observe with attention, you can see that Ali reatrets all the time while Chuvalo is the opposite...he never retreats even one step.Judge for yourself!
ali is the kind of fighter who would hit you in the face and hit you so often that youd wish hed knock you out. ali was a head hunter and he would punish you for 12 or 15 rounds. just beat you up.
I believe as well as Dunphy it's Eamonn Andrews' and Cus D'Amato's voices you hear. Andrews was an amateur in his young days who used to fight and then rush to the commentary position to do his stint on the rest of the bouts for Irish radio. Interesting bit of history at the end of the 12th, with D'Amato's accurate speculation on what would be the outcome of the upcoming Vietnam controversy.
If Big George Foreman hit him with all he had and he didnt not faze him, what makes you think Ali was going to knock him out. No offense but as they say physics dont lie.
@mudoni5160 Ali who? Ali Baba? Ali Ali Oxenfree? Not Ali who fought so hard in a 105 dg ring in Manilla that he needed 3 days in the hospital? Not Ali who boxed blind v one of the scariest HW champs ever because he cheated and rubbed chemicals in his eyes? Not Ali who got his jaw broken by a 221 lb ex marine and didnt go out or even go down? Not Ali who let the hardest hitting HW champ in history use him for a punching bag and then KO'd him once he got tired? Naah, you must mean Ali Baba.
Chuvalo had so many qualities as a fighter - he just lacked that killer instinct edge on his punches or he could have been one of the greatest champs in the history of the division.
I salute you Mr Chuvalo and nice to see youagain an met you at KFC Kipling ans Rexdale. My family loves you Harry 73 birthday this September and qe should call you Sir
These two fighters put todays boxers to shame. Todays heaveyweight divison is full of either fat outshape slobs who get tierd after a few rounds or really tall gusy with no skill who only win because of their reach. This was the true period in boxing. These guys went at it for 15 rounds. thats insane.
@johnnyfromda805 yea. even mma heavy weights suck too. Seriously brock lesnar only has like 5 pro fights and is heavyweight champ. Nobody in the boxing world has the character of these guys. in mma there are a few.
chuvalo was one of the toughest fighters ever. not a successful fighter, but he fought Ali, Foreman, Liston, Patterson, all the greats and he was never knocked down in 90 fights.
Chuvalo; very tough! One of the toughest in boxing. He's sort of like a Joe Fraiser! He even throws a lot of left hooks like Fraiser and can take shots like Fraiser. But he is not in the same class as Ali. However, if boxing matches went 50 rounds, then anything could happen.
He had a better chin than Frazier but lacked the head movement. Instead of bobbing and weaving to get inside, Chuvalo would just walk right through, taking any shot his opponent would throw.
Yap Foreman could not knock Chuvalo out!Coz Chuvalo could couldnt do anything but to absorb all the punches of Foreman. The Referree couldnt do anything but to stop the fight!
chuvalo was a pretty good fighter, who was going to beat ali at that time?93 fights never off his feet,64 ko's.yeah much more then a punching bag my friend
im not saying chuvalo wasnt a good fighter but he had nothing on Ali, chuvalo could take a lot of punishment we all know that but so could Ali. Ali could also dance and jab and always keep up his pace. Chuvalo would never have beaten someone who had all that going for them. The reason Ali always won was because he could sustain his punches all round every round.
george chuvalo, nor anyone else was going to beat ali in the 60's.yes ali was tough too but not as tough as chuvalo was.hes 70 years old now still in good heath, very well spoken and from what i hear bench presses over 425 lbs
He was strong and tough but theres obivously a lot more to boxing than that. That is why Ali reigned the way he did completely different to any other boxer. The greatest
1 has to remember also, chuvalo was never managed well as a young fighter and also didn,t have a good trainer either.one has to wonder how far he might have gone if he had.chuvalo was a pretty good boxer as well but against ali he was fighting a master boxer
ali signed a contract to meet the winner of the chuvalo/mike dejohn fight.after chuvalo beat dejohn ali called him a washer woman and desided against fight a tough opponent like chuval at the time
yeah, its too bad, but Ali wasn't good enough to do that. Nobody was. And how is Chuvalo nothing more than a punching bag? Ali went to the hospital after the fight. Chuvalo has over 60 knockouts. Get your facts straight.

Dunphy, despite his reputation, often calls "Chuvalo to the jaw," when indeed, he wasn't even hitting Ali.
bumblebeemoi 8 months ago
@bumblebeemoi Well Dunphy like almost all ex champs and commentators of that era hated Ali. Ali in the 60s was booed more than anyone else.

Jimmison007 4 years ago
No he wasn't, he changed his name after the first Liston fight in 1964, although very few commentators reckognised that fact for some reason.
