I need the 22 magnum cylinder for the old version single-six. If you know where to find one, or have one to sell please contact me. And are the shims what create the timing for firing?
dosent the transfer bar come up when you cock it and hit the firing pin not block it? and its safer because it is down when not cocked so the firing pin cant be hit?
If you have a .22LR and a .22 WRM. individual Revolvers and you shot with people who do not know weapons only bring out one ,22 at a time or better yet only bring one shooting. Because someone will load a .22 LR in your .22WRM. Guaranteed.
I wouldn't change between .22 shorts longs or long rifles as after a lot of rounds they erode the cylinder so you won't be able to load the longer round past the erosion in the cylinder wall. If your going to shoot a lot of .22 shorts better get a dedicated cylinder or gun for that.
I just picked up a single six with the 9.5 inch barrel. I can't wait to get it. Damn 7 day waiting period here in RI. Nice video. It made me more exited about this gun. I have two .45's and a .357, and love them all, but it us nice to have something that will not break the bank to shoot all the time. Plus it is a very beautiful gun on top of it all!
I'd be grinning ear to ear if I was carrying a Ruger Single Six with six .22WMR cartridges in the cylinder! I just bought a Marlin .22WMR bolt action rifle and the Single Six would make a fine companion. I'd prefer the 5.5" or 6.5" barrel with adjustable sights.
I very much admire the Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt as well. Both the Single SIx & Vaquero look great whether blued or stainless
the transfer bar does not work as you described. There is a notch in the hammer that does not allow the hammer to touch the firing pin until the hammer come all the way back and the transfer bar raises to fill the gap between the hammer and the firing pin.

whar can i git one a new one i fond some black ones but with plastic handels and silver ones with wood handels i wont a black or dark gray one with wood handel can someone help?
I grew up shooting the Ruger 10/22 and Single Six as well as the Remington 552 Speedmaster. Three classics any young gun owner would be proud of owning.
just picked one of these up today. It's the older 3 screw model, not sure if you can get the magnum cylinders for it but 22lr is just fine for me. Some of the bluing on the gun is pretty well worn off, but when the only other option is a heritage rough rider the ruger won the debate. I'm pretty happy with it, and for only 150 bucks i think it's a great deal. The bore and cylinder lock up is top notch and i think it'll be a great gun to shoot, can't wait to try er out.
About as pure a recreational* handgun as one could find. A true classic.
* NOTE: The most important handguns are defensive handguns. Your firearms don't need to be sporting or recreational in order to be valuable, legitimate, and entitled to constitutional protection. But there is also a great deal of wholesome relaxation to be had in plinking at targets or even hunting small game (in season) on a sunny afternoon with a fine sporting rimfire revolver like this.
I got one of these as a kid. I just just checking it out and it says "Made in the 200th year of american liberty" on the top of the barrel. I had thought of selling it but after this review I think I'd better hold on to it.
@RedmanOutfitters Pretty sure the rifling is different and the barrel diameter is a little wider on the .22LR/WMR Single Six than they are on dedicated .22LR pistols (Bisley, Bearcat, Mark III).
@Deep13Deep13Deep13 Actually the bullet is the same grain and diameter hense 22. the casing though is a little bigger so that is why they sell an intercgangeable cylinder
@sootch00 I heard that for no xtra charge you can get this gun with an intergral barrel rib for scope mounting, ruger calls this their HUNTER model ? are you fimiluar with that model gun ?
@ikilluwitmybarefists WOULD THE 22 SHORTS IN A SOLID POINT AMMO BE GOOD FOR RABBIT HUNTING, WITHOUT DAMAGING TOO MUCH OF THE MEAT FOR EATING, THAN THE LR JHP AMMO.?
I have a friend that by accident shot a few rounds of .22 lr's out of the .22 mag. cylinder, could that have done any damage to it. He didn't know there was a difference. I was thinking about buying the gun off him but didn't know after hearing that. Anyones help would be greatly appreciated. He wants $200 and its the older model stainless steel in great shape and both cylinders.
@tweirup It's probably fine. Check around the back of the barrel at the cylinder for any damage and the cylinder itself. Taking to a gunsmith would be the safest bet but it still should be fine. $200 is a great deal.
@sootch00 you should pick one up and do a review on it, i got mine a few days ago on sale for $129.99 and put a couple hundred rounds through it at the range and its a great shooter. it looks identical to the ruger and disassembles just like it. now the bluing is not as pretty, but the mechanical aspect of the gun is flawless. made in the USA, in Opa Locka, Florida
both of my cylinders are fluted. Ive had this gun since 1975. I grew up shooting it with my Dad it will always be the one I shoot the most. Thanks for posting this.
hello,i just got my first single six,its the new model,is it normal that your cylinder does not line up with the ejector when it turns and you have to line it up your self..
I absolutely love my Single Six. Got it about 7 years ago from my dad. He was going to sell it and I just had to have it so I bought it from him. It's been my go-to gun for range plinking and always goes with me camping. I've babied it but this is one rugged and reliable little .22. Same goes for all my Rugers. If I could only have one pistol and one rifle they'd be this and my 10/22!
A family member passed away, leaving his Ruger Single-Six circa 1963 to his spouse. I used to hunt w/ rifle and shotgun but am a novice to handguns. The Single-Six is in very good condition, includes magnum cylinder and transfer rod installed. What do you think this gun is worth? I estimate between $400 and $500. Any thoughts? Your video was helpful to me. Thanks.
Nice video. I have this revolver. I bought it new in 1997 for $225.00, now they're going for $350.00 new where I live. Excellent shooter, accurate and super reliable.
Nice I have one with a 9.5 barrel mine cost me I believe $150 back then some 30+ yrs ago, Gun rust easy once bluing is gone I applied Moly resin flat black look awesome all blacked out.
Very nice gun sootch. I bought the wrong gun. The one I purchased was the 5 1/2" bbl. I should have purchased the one you have which is longer and heavier. Sincerely, JAMES'
That is true. I have bad snakes scorpions turantulas and a minor squirrel problem. squirrels suck. I use the 10/22 but a rifle isn't as convenient as a pistol at all.
This is a very pleasant and informative review. They are fun revolvers. I've always enjoyed shooting other people's Single Sixes and am thinking hard about picking up one for myself.
Some people report accuracy problems with the convertible Single Six when using the .22 LR cylinder. Blame is usually placed on the slightly oversized barrel bore that Ruger must use in order to allow the use of the slightly wider .22 Magnum bullets.
I have the H and R 686 5.5 inch barrel and i love it. It also has the interchangeable cylinder for the 22 mag. It was made circa 1980. Good stuff man.
make sure the base pin is well lubricated. sometimes it can get stuck and you have to hammer it out from behind by the hammer. i dont like to use tools to dissasemble fiearms
Great info video! The only neg on this video is that you failed to tell people that the .22 short and .22 long are fired from a fluted cylinder and the .22 magnum is fired from an un-fluted cylinder. This could mean that someone may have wasted a shooting trip because he or she packed the wrong cylinder against the rounds they took with them. But, great video and I applaud the producer for stressing the safety issues. This would be a great training video for new shooters. Thumbs up!!!
@dukesins yes, it happened to me once, i took the wrong cylinder with me out to the range. not worth the risk of trying ammunition in the wrong cylinder though. the gun wont blow out on you thats for sure, but you will most likely wear the cylinder pretty bad.
Thanks momo671. I know that you can't get the magnum round into the standard cylinder, but the .22 short and .22 standard will fit into the magnum cylinder. I'm still not sure about what damage can be done, if any when firing shorts and longs in a magnum cylinder. I'm going to try and find out though. Regardless, it could be a great days shooting lost anyway when one takes the standard cylinder and only has magnum rounds on hand.
My humblest apologies to everyone. I know that I was distracted whilst watching this. (Even as I write, I'm being bombarded with 'family stuff from people who have more important issues at stake). I've seen the parts where the differences in cylinders have been pointed out. Once again, my apologies. I have to go now... More interruptions!
Ooops. There I go again. assuming things. I've only seen magnum cylinders unfluted. At this stage, I'll hazard a guess that when Sturm-Ruger brought out the New Model Single Six, they made this difference for quicker identification. Once again, that's just my guess. I appreciate the info though. One can never know too much about this sort of thing. Cheers from downunder.
Hi sootch. Could you please tell me - Do you fire lead LR bullets thru this Revolver?? I had some problems with my Single Six (shorter version). I had some lead residue left behind in the round part that is just beneath inside around the barrel at the breach end of the gun. I cannot remove this now. So I shoot only copper coated ammo and clean it really well after each shooing session. I would really appreciate the advice. Thanks for another great vid. Sincerely,d JAMES.
@buzzclark this is not a big deal .22 ammunition is very dirty, revolvers have a gap between the cylinder and the barrel. so the lead and carvon get collected there. it may happen regardless of shooting lead or copper coated rounds.there are ways too tighten up the gap but dont worry about it too much.
Very nice review. The Ruger Talo Edition 22LR/WMR is right at the head of my "To Buy" list. But along the way, I fell in love with the Smith and Wesson 351 PD-22WMR revolver , 7 rounds, Double/Single Action and found a slightly used one in near mint condition for $369. Couldn't pass it up. Now I have to convince the wife that we also need the Ruger Single Six with interchangeable cylinders to add to our growing collection.
yes, you wont drop your brass on the floor! great thing if you do reloads. Also it will shoot 99.999% of the time when you pull the trigger. either its a bad bullet or youre really binding the trigger when it wont go boom. quicker to shoot out of the holster since there is no safety to worry about as you draw. (COP KILLER) and sometimes easier to conceal. and you cant forget... they are beautiful!
momo671 is right on the mark. Another advantage of a small D.A. snubbie is it can be fired from a pocket if needed or in a tight situation where the slide would be restricted for a follow up shot.
OMG you do like the same guns i like. you have similar taste. thats awesome. im only 20 yrs old too. kids my age dont know what they are missing. i just got an older model from my friends grandpa who was looking for a buyer. i stole it off his hands for 150 bucks! he only used it once and the 22 mag cylinder is brand spanking new. such a fun gun. he store it for 30 years! i couldnt believe it
Don, Which model is this? I have been looking to pick up a 22 revolver for nostalgia, but I cannot find the blued/wood grip model on Ruger's site. Thanks much!
I bought this pistol about three years ago and since then they've discontinued the wood for black plastic. Sad... You can still pick up one like this around gun shops.
Thats an excellent setup. I love those single shot pistols and that holster is very nice also. I have a few holsters from El Paso Saddlery and they are great. Nice video!
If i didn't know better, I'd say you had my gun. I have the same pistol, right down to the target sights and wood grips. Everything Sooch says is right by the way. This is an awsome pistol.
I think you said "in 22LR, 22 long, 22 short and then with the 22 magnum interchangable cylinder" in the video. My question is; is there such a thing as a 22 Long and if there is, then what's the difference between a 22 Long and a 22LR? Or did you mean 22LR? Great video, nice piece!
the 22 long is a different round from the 22long rifle, I believe they both have the exact same case but the 22long has a shorter bullet than the 22 long rifle...because this is a revovler and there is no cycling since ther case of the 22short, 22 long and 22 long rifle are all the same you cna use any of them...
I like the Ruger Single Six with the trad. Blade sites. Like there Ruger Vaquero. More authentic western style. They make em' in both them sites and the trad. blade sights. Good video Sootch

I'm still not sure about what damage can be done, if any when firing shorts and longs in a magnum cylinder. I'm going to try and find out though. Regardless, it could be a great days shooting lost anyway when one takes the standard cylinder and only has magnum rounds on hand.

I think he did point this important detail out.

More interruptions!
dukesins 2 years ago
actually on the old model that i have, both cylinders are fluted, so its even harder to tell which one is which. lol
momo671 2 years ago

Have you come across the High Standard Sentinels in .22LR? Interesting revolvers, they have a 9 round cylinder.
SteyrM1912 2 years ago
@SteyrM1912 yes, her name is vicky! its a great revolver. i think its the highest capacity revolver out there. they are incredibly accurate as well.

wish they would make ruger mark 3 in .22 magnum

This has a really long neck. I don't think it would fit in my purse. lol
Another great video Mr. Gun Kata. Keep up the great work my awesome friend.

You're so funny~Yes, It would take one massive purse to carry this pistol.

Sincerely,d JAMES.
buzzclark 2 years ago

Nice review, i do wonder however, in general does the revolver have any benefits over a semi-automatic magazine pistol design?
Emo83 2 years ago
yes, you wont drop your brass on the floor! great thing if you do reloads.

Thanks much!
teddycanary 2 years ago
I bought this pistol about three years ago and since then they've discontinued the wood for black plastic. Sad... You can still pick up one like this around gun shops.
Thanks Bro~

My father owns one of these that he bought many years ago. It was the first pistol I ever shot as a kid in the 70s.

NorthlandShooter 2 years ago
the 22 long is a different round from the 22long rifle, I believe they both have the exact same case but the 22long has a shorter bullet than the 22 long rifle...because this is a revovler and there is no cycling since ther case of the 22short, 22 long and 22 long rifle are all the same you cna use any of them...
cutlerylover 2 years ago
Thanks, very informative guys!
NorthlandShooter 2 years ago
Cutlerylover is right. Also you don't see 22 long much anymore. 22LR is typically used in place of 22 long.
Thanks~

I like the Ruger Single Six with the trad. Blade sites. Like there Ruger Vaquero. More authentic western style. They make em' in both them sites and the trad. blade sights. Good video Sootch
